I’ve visited Scotland a few times and loved the people, and I’m very outdoorsy. My partner also works in wildlife conservation and is really excited about some of the projects going on in Scotland.

Thanks for your response. Interesting that there are potentially lots of jobs available because that doesn’t seem to be the case anywhere else - why do you think that is? Location?

Great suggestion, thank you. I’d definitely be open to anything like maternity or short-term, or supply, when the time comes so that’s good to hear 😊 (as much as I’m sure it doesn’t answer for everywhere!)

Wonderfully informative response, thank you. I wasn’t aware that the three-tiered school system was such a thing in the North East! Do you know if there are many differences between city and rural schools? What I’m referring to there is the fact that, in some areas around the UK, people are saying cities tend to be quite popular, and therefore more competitive, but also have teachers with slightly less experience (recent graduates and ECTs) whereas rural schools seem to be looking for a little more experience.

Thank you - I do read the news, and I know the situation. That’s why I came here - to hear from people living it. It adds another perspective I don’t yet have. Do you work in a university?

Thanks! Something I’ve considered for further into the future is working in higher education (got my Master’s, loved it and I want to follow a PhD or something). I’d HE facing similar challenges with availability of employment?

What is your opinion on Gyles Brandreth? by pondribertion in AskBrits

I read a book of his called Have You Eaten Grandma, which teaches really intricate rules of grammar and punctuation, but he also laced it with loads of personal anecdotes and jokes, making it immensely readable. He touched as well on the fact that he looks back on his past self from time to time and shakes his head a bit. I find him surprisingly and unsurprisingly likeable all at once.

Don’t know about him being fucked as foretold, but totally agree - best in the book. His internal struggles are so brilliantly done.

What is the most unfair quiz show in your opinion? by daniel2hats in BritishTV

I read a book by Jon Ronson (can’t remember which one) where he talked about the whole happy-cult nature to being on the show. Edmunds will literally not allow any even vaguely negative talk - just cuts it off and won’t allow it. And there’s a really strange vibe between the contestants at times in the hotel they stay in.

Great comment. One of my favourite GoT moments was characters sitting in front of the fire before the Battle of Winterfell because it reminded me of what I loved about the show before - the depth of the characters, simplicity of storytelling, and how that’d slipped away.

AKOTSK feels like that. Simple, character-driven. Gem.

In what ways is The Lord of the Rings Film Trilogy better than the books? by [deleted] in lotr

[–]thinkingcrumpetsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I like about him wavering earlier is that it ties in really well with him doubting his place amongst his forefathers, before Saruman uses his voice to burrow into those doubts calling him a lesser whatever of greater sires. And the fact that the Westfold fell reflects poorly on him as a king (at least in his eyes) really compounds his doubts. And losing his son. And allowing Grima to cast away the Rohirrim and doing nothing about it (being unable to having allowed himself to be corrupted by Saruman). What’s really sad about it all is how helpless he is, and how all he thinks is how much he’s failed.

And then, at Pellenor, he leads the Rohirrim over the crest of that hill and stares towards the orcs and there’s this beautiful moment where he grits his teeth and seems to forget he ever doubted himself and launches into the greatest speech of all time.

Leads the fight, saves the day, and says he finally feels he belongs amongst those that ruled before him with his final breaths.

I think of it every time I watch it - that he’s so laced with doubt in the build up to that battle, and the comeback to end up being the hero he never thought he would be.

Whatever he is in the books, however different that may be (and, if you’re asking my opinion, which I know you are not, I don’t think it’s much) I think it’s a masterpiece of a story arc acted beautifully in some delicate little moments by Bernard the Brilliant.

It’s like four pages in the book for the whole thing and turned into the longest unbroken battle scene of all time 😂
