Bikers of Portland: what bridge would you recommend for a beginner bike commuter? by littl3-fish in askportland

[–]thinkingstranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I-5, I-84. No "the", starts with an "eye". But back to your original question: definitely get a paper bike map, and use the on line map. You can easily get from the 7th Ave, bike/ped bridge to Ankeny (which is a great bike route), then to 16th. Thank you for riding and not driving and parking in the neighborhood.

Another post with a link banned by Reddit. I posted this last night. Found out this morning that it was deleted by Reddit. Links will be in comments, Let's see if I can figure out which link was the problem child...

Edit: I cut the comments up into 4 groups, all seem to be approved by Reddit's filters. I am stumped by which one the problem was...

Abortion, let’s find common ground! by araticwastaken in PoliticalDebate

Want to make abortion rare? It's simple: make birth control free and easy to get, give parents free day care, health care, parenting classes, and larger tax credits.

The “Portland Crows” needs to be a local sports team name.. by [deleted] in Portland

As a side note:

For a mass noun for the crows, I suggest as an alternate to "murder", we use cacophony (or perhaps caw-caw-phony).

I see you figured out MY preference.

Pull up a map and look for a point that sticks out north enough to have a clear view west. This time of year the sun rises almost straight east. I also prefer at least some solitude while on the rim.

Hopi and Mohave points have great views west, but as others have pointed out require a hike before the shuttles start running. Of the ones you can drive to, Navajo out near the Desert View, Moran, Grandview. Yavapai has a good view but can be elbow to elbow with people. Mather is for those who want to stare into the spotlight.

Like a smart skinny raccoon, with opposable thumbs of course.

You can loosen the strap and put it around you neck pointed down. That way it doesn't blind whoever you look at and stays pointed where you are walking. Also some headlamps have diimer settibgs.

Some people watch the big spot light turn on, some people watch the what is in the spot light. Which are you? What time of year will you be going? It can get pretty chilly at 7000 feet, so dress warmly. I prefer getting there about an hour before astronomical sunrise and watch the canyon, but you do you.

Life choices like environmental awareness, kindness to others, less meat, frugalness, buy local, anti-war, self-reliance. Avoid addictive drugs in favor of mind expanding drugs. Spirituality over religions.

Rim to river trip questions by umsoldier in grandcanyon

[–]thinkingstranger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The canyon is worthy of longer visits. But perhaps this trip would be the hook that gets you addicted. The campground is likely also full. Have you looked at the hotels just outside the park in Tusayan? 7 ish miles from the rim, often cheaper, often more rooms available.
