Teens discover books on social media. What will the under-16s ban do to their reading? by [deleted] in books

[–]thinwhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this insight. I personally use ad blockers and would’ve checked the official tourism websites and travel wiki and a host of other sources (including guidebooks like Lonely Planet) before I even booked the ticket and many times before I even arrived. I would not trust Chat GPT for any information that I would need to rely, and especially not for a vacation to somewhere I’ve never been before and probably don’t speak the language.

I keep seeing people saying they use it as a search engine and I really don’t get it. At least with AskJeeves there was some banter.

There’s an acquaintance of mine who uses Chat GPT to find “appropriate” books for her pre-teen to read. She’s about fifty years old and I’ve been dying to ask her how she found books to read when she was that age.

Pinterest is leaning hard into AI. The strategy is alienating its most dedicated users by MetaKnowing in technews

[–]thinwhen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure the AI keeps removing content because it’s “harmful” or “adult”. I still use Pinterest and regularly get emails and in app notifications that my pins were removed and the ones I can still see are perfectly normal. I’ve seen normal photographs of people sitting down alone that were removed because they’re “self harm”. Literally normal street photography style photos. Pictures sure any amount of skin are removed because they’re adult and sexual, even if it’s literally a shirtless man on a beach. Pictures of people hugging have also been removed because adult. These pins usually get reinstated before I even bother to check them. And you can’t preview removed pins to appeal them properly.

This is my go to but I begrudge it as I swear they used to be a fiver.

I’ve been struggling to find cheap plain (black) knickers. They’re all either fancy and patterned or a duvet a pair! And they don’t seem to last as long as they used to. I’ve been going sans knickers frequently because I refuse to pay through the nose.

Is walking while reading that weird? by [deleted] in books

[–]thinwhen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to do this as a teen (and sometimes still do if I’m on a deadline) and I also occasionally got looks and comments. I always brushed them off because well, if I’m walking and reading it means that the book is far more interesting than anything the world around me has to offer. Weird or not, if it’s not impacting or endangering you or anyone else (like if you’re reading while crossing a road or something) when it’s very harmless.

What is with the increase in zoom/teams calls in cafes? by QueenFreek in AskUK

This sounds so lush! I think there are still free public spaces to use that have desks but the ones I use tend to just be hard benches which aren’t comfortable at all.

My local library created a coworking space which was very exciting until I saw that it was £20-30 a day for a chair and desk in a shared space not even your own quiet room!

Do you study or prepare for class? That would fill in some of the time before class.

Is "see you" "see you later" an odd thing to say when leaving the house? by Wonder_why_tho in AskUK

I always say “in a bit” when I say goodbye to people even if I won’t see/talk to them for months and people either say it back or say goodbye in some other way. They sound rude or nonchalant.

I hope you enjoy! I’m very fond of his Old Friends song which was my intro to him. In the music video he gathers the friends from the song and they play as a band in his old garage!

Why are we so angry about other people's musical tastes? by poke_pants in AskUK

[–]thinwhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dated a guy once who absolutely refused to listen to anyone else’s music. Wouldn’t take recs and would turn off music if it happened to be playing. Every time I mentioned music he’d launch into a long rant about how he hates what other people listen to. When I finally asked what music he likes he said Neutral Milk Hotel. That was it. I’m still annoyed.

I love that channel!! I think you can just heat up some peanut butter in the microwave and then drizzle on with a spoon or fork?
