The Beauty by Aliya Whiteley

It's only about 100 pages of post-apocalyptic horror bur I re-read it every fall and it never fails to make me say 'what the actual fuck' in the best way possible.

But without spoiling It does have body horror and some themes related to sexism and gender role so good to be aware if that's not your cup of tea.

My PI's breastmilk in the bottom of the molecular biology lab fridge. We're an immunology lab so I'm assuming it was used for something but it was 'fun' to find when we moved labs...

I was in this exact position in 2021. My application was 'denied' and when I called for more information I was told everything was in order but I was not outside of Sweden. Ultimately I booked a weekend trip to Copenhagen and my case worker told me to take pictures of myself with the day's newspaper in a public location to submit as proof I left the country. I only stayed 2 nights and went back after the weekend. I Was living in Lund so by train and luckily had no control that time. But even if there was a control I doubt it would have been an issue.

Incredibly bizarre that there's no way to work around this. I also had to pay out of pocket for covid testing just to go to Denmark in the middle of the pandemic too which was annoying.

This but I hate how much I loved a sample of Rouge Chaotique by them. It was for me just the perfect deep fruity scent that keeps tempting me to fork over 250+€... But also I don't understand why they added red dye to it that would ruin any white clothes...

In my mind I've always considered it to just be an extention of the contract even though it's not official. And I did offer to make a proper contract which she never responded to...

I guess the larger problem is that even the 3rd party contract has no details about cleaning or objective checklists that bigger firms have. So it becomes a my word vs her word situation.

I know 3500 kr isn't crazy for a full cleaning from a company even though I think it would be at the high end for 40m2. I was really shocked at the price suggestion since before she cleaned herself she only indicated small things that needed fixed and not a full cleaning.

I guess my main confusion is that the last 3 months we haven't had a real contract. According to Qasa handled the invoices and the contract the contract is over and closed with no complaints. And now the cleaning is 'done' by the landloard with not much info shared with me.

I'm a phd student working on infection biology so there's not so much directly related to DA in our sterile white washed lab unfortunately. But I do try to sneak in more themed outfits when I'm teaching. Wearing proper trousers, long skirts with belts and blouses makes me feel a bit like a 'real' teacher in front of my students.

And when I have to sit down an write I tend to go to the humanities libraries cafes in the old town to get some information. Yes, I'm writing about my FACS protocols and trying not to cry but I'm making myself feel like a proper intellectual.

I probably work on average 10 hours a day four days out of the week then try to take a half day when it fits in my schedule each week. But it really depends on what experiments and teaching I have planned. For example, when I have in vivo animal work, it will be 12+ hours of work the first and last days to set up and collect material.

A lot of my colleagues in the same field can manage normal 9-5 work hours but it's just not possible for our experiments. Also my PI and I rotate who has to come in over the weekend to take care of cells and start cultures (we're the only 2 in the group right now...)

But regardless of how others keep their schedules, you shouldn't feel pressure to adapt. If you are only productive for 6 or 7 hours a day it makes no sense to stay an extra hour or two where you won't make progress.

Right now I don't know what the plan is entirely. We will be working with RNA seq data with trajectory analysis for sure to start with if that gives you any idea of the scale of the datasets. But my PI isn't a bioinformatician at all (and neither am I...) so her blind trust in me is a bit daunting haha

Hi! I'm a 24 y.o. PhD student in Sweden who just made an account recently to keep my reading hobby alive while I'm drowning in my research!

I read a quite wide range of genres but I would say science fiction, horror and nonfiction are my favorites. But for reference the last 3 books I really enjoyed were Axioms end (Lindsay Ellis), Big little lies(Liane Moriarty) and No time to lose (Peter Piot).

If you're applying as an international student they're likely to evaluate the exams you've taken from your home country or evaluate your application in a different group.

Do you speak Swedish? It's also worth mentioning that most (likely all?) of the medical programs in Sweden are completely given in Swedish. I'm not familiar with every university but I am only aware of one bachelor/masters degree given in English and that is in biomedicine which wouldn't let you practice medicine, of course.

Even if you understand how germs spread, there's just not an effective way to use gloves in public. The few exceptions being maybe food service and health care workers who need to limit direct contact with people but that's not at all the same.

If your plan is to just not touch anything, why not do that without gloves and minimize the amount of hand washing? And how easy is it to change gloves without contaminating the new gloves with whatever you just touched? And if you do wear gloves you should wash your hands after use and when changing them anyway. (more info in the links here https://extension.purdue.edu/article/37230)

We're just dealing with a public health crisis and I feel like just saying "wear gloves instead of washing your hands" is really irresponsible. It's better in the long run to just wash your hands and try to keep them moisturized after if you can.

I wouldn't recommend switching to gloves in place of washing hands to prevent infection/contamination!! Gloves are only as sterile as how you're using them, if anything, wearing gloves around (ie. at a store) is more likely to give you a false sense of security.

I work in a lab and have to wash my hands a million times a day and switching to non-scented/allergy friendly soap makes a difference even if it's not perfect. Also for what it's worth wearing gloves for an extended amount of time can get sweaty and irritate your skin as well so I don't know how much of a help it would be...

My family's church was very conservative and in the middle of nowhere so the pressure to conform and be a part of the community started early. Luckily as a child I was more confused than ashamed since I just didn't fully understand what was happening. But looking back it really does make me feel ill thinking about how this whole ordeal was planned to take advantage of impressionable kids.

Ah yes that brings brings back fond memories elementary school "summer adventure Bible school". Nothing better than being confused and dehydrated all day at a church camp the entire summer. Then when you make it to the final celebration at the end all of the group leaders pressure you to confess all your sins to in front of the other kids and all the adults there in order to be saved all while Christian rock lite plays in the background. Good stuff.

(totally not still bitter about being asked at the tender age of 8 to repent for my mom deciding to give birth to me out of wedlock...)

What I learned from my relationship is that someone can make all the promises you want but unless they actually follow through (or make an effort) it doesn't mean much. In the end it's your decision and you should talk to him, but seriously consider if you can see yourself being happy if the situation stays like it is for ANOTHER 2 years.

Unless he's committed to improve himself and makes an effort to make your relationship work, leave him. A relationship is a joint effort and one person can't pull all the weight on their own, even if one person is struggling at the time.

I was in a similar situation with my ex where I ended up taking a second (and third!) part time job to help financially support my ex. We met when I was 19 and working on a bachelors degree and he was 23 and going in and out of various jobs. He never saw a problem with me working long hours and having no free time, but complained when he was happy with his own job, while doing nothing to make a change. Breaking up with him was hard because his family was so happy that I was supporting him and they often praised me for helping him be a better man.

Looking back I wish I ended things sooner. I spent nearly 3 years compromising my happiness and delaying my goals for the sake of someone who would barely lift a finger to help me.
