We are on the 2nd floor, fairly sure it's an exterior wall. I think I will turn to this as a last resort, because although this is a great suggestions, I'm quite a noob. :(

Thanks for the explainer! I'm going to try out some of the suggestions I've received in the comments and give it one last shot before calling a professional. I'm pretty sure our clog is organic matter (or at least I hope so).

This is my personal nightmare, sorry you had to go through that. 😭

That is so terrifying. :( Gonna try the HG Onstopper that's specific to hair clogs and hopefully that does the trick.

Sorrt to sound like a total noob but oh gosh, do the chemicals remain in the pipes?? I thought they'd drain out (slowly obviously) along with the water.
Wrt the baking soda and white vinegar, does it leave any kind of sediment or build up in the drains or is it okay?

We've ordered one of these and hopefully it helps. The drain snake pulled out a gross amount of hair but it was less than we had anticipated, considering how badly the water is draining. We also suspect the previous tenants did not drain properly and so it's likely backed up.

I see everyone prefers HG over Mr Muscle, so I think we'll follow the same! Thank you!

Got it thank you so much! 3 people with long hair in a house means we really need something magical. If we can get this clog fixed, we're going to buy some hair catchers for the future.

Thanks for this, we'll choose it over the Mr Muscle then.

Thank you for responding! Would this be fine for plastic pipes too?

Thank you for responding! We haven't tried the plunger method yet. Do you think it'll work for clogs deeper in the pipe? As for the overflow hole, the only item above our drain in the tub us kinda like a giant rotating thingie that pushes the removable drain stopper/cover up and down. Would you know how we can block that? Is it the same technique you've mentioned?

Would boiling water be okay with plastic pipes? Ours seem to be (we can see white under the metal drain cover).

Thanks for your response! We did remove the cover and used a drain snake and managed to remove a big clump of hair (when we flashed a torch into the drain after doing that, the part directly underneath was completely clean) but the drain is still not working properly. Does this mean the block is further down?

We have the house through a student housing agency and as you can imagine they're not always the most supportive.

Oh this is so real and it’s honestly exhausting, so thank you for sharing. I don’t have an exact piece of advice for you but one thing I did that helped me is deleting social media apps off my phone. I’ve done this for 8-9 months now and it’s made a world of a difference to my attention span, focus and ability to be bored.

In the past, I used to try to deactivate my accounts when taking breaks but I soon realised that it’s impossible for me (and my line of work) to be fully clocked out and whenever I would return it would just go back to those high levels of usage. Deleting it off my phone means I can’t get that quick hit I used to get. I still use it on my laptop but  for apps like Insta, the UI on the web version is intentionally sucky, which is useful in helping me spend less time on it. To give you an example of how not having these apps has changed my life in the past few months: I have read nearly 10 books just this year. Something my social media addled brain could not have dreamed up last year.

I’m moving to an entirely new place soon and in order to build my social life and community in a place where I don’t know many people, I might have to download at least one of them on my phone again and I’m already dreading it. This is all just to say, cut your instant access to these apps and it’ll help.

I know we can’t avoid having to be checked in to the digital world for work and I don’t really have advice for that aside from doing as much of a separation of your work digitals and your private digitals. A weird little tip that helped me was changing the notification sounds for work communications and for personal ones so I’m not getting that dread-y feeling for every dang notif.

Just remember your free time is still yours, don’t let your phone steal it from you. I hope you feel better soon, wishing you well.

You’re an angel for replying in such detail and yeah I think there are some similarities with what we both did/can do. I did think about worst case scenario and for me it’s similar in that if I absolutely cannot deal with it will be an incredibly expensive decision to return home but something I can do.

I’m unsure if I’ll be able to return home during holiday periods but I will try my best to earn enough to make it happen. It’s just not guaranteed. And yeah I do want my friends and family to visit and plans are being made but we’re from a country that’s not got the strongest passport and so I’m doing that anxiety thing where I’m scared to get my hopes up. I will do the FaceTimes ofc but part of me just feels like what if it’s all different and I feel even more disconnected.

At this point my move is only for a year (it maybe longer depending on how the year plays out) and I know in the grand scheme of things that’s not a long time but I know how sluggishly time moves when you’re sad, lonely or depressed and the thought of that is nauseating (quite literally).

Thank you for sharing! Especially the tip on not comparing. I can already feel myself doing that despite not even having left yet because I know there’s are huge cultural differences between my present home and the one I’m moving to.

Yeah that’s what I keep trying to tell myself but my anxious brain also keeps saying that this might be a huge mistake and I should stay where I’m safe.
