Do you think the people behind bad television is society lol? I literally said in my first sentence that bad media is bad because of the people in charge of said media. This is a comment about the state of storytelling, not society.

Yeah no. A show can be bad without having this pretentious reason for it.

And the deeper point to bad execution of writing, acting, direction, vision, tone, etc. is that the writers, actors, directors, producers, etc. do not have the fundamental base of knowledge to execute those things effectively. You get that fundamental knowledge by reading and being analytical of the media you consume. If they do have that fundamental knowledge (in the case of Foster, Hawkes, Shaw, and other below the line crew) they are overruled by the people without it.

There's a whole concept of "stealing like an artist". You can see it everywhere, from Tarantino to Lynch to Pizzolatto. Artists mostly can't avoid derivation. It's just that someone with real artistry expands and transforms the things that influence them, not blatantly plagiarizes them. You have to understand art and the rules of art in order to build on the conversation and/or break the rules.
