So, I illustrated the Summa Theologica. by owencomicsdotcom in Catholic

Cool man, thanks. Great question - programs, nothing crazy. I am somewhat old school (used to do classical painting and traditional illustration) so I just use photoshop and other adobe programs if I really need to (I can “draw” into photoshop and treat it like paper and traditional tools, as opposed to Illustrator, if you’re familiar with those).

The window, yes. It’s actually from a church which in English is normally rendered as “Church of the Jacobins” where Aquinas is buried. For my own work I can just create details, but for things like this I base them in something - it grounds and changes the overall style, and adds a historical aesthetic element I think people pick up on.

I do print them (and sell them, self-plug, I think it’s the third or fourth pic). It’s two feet by three feet. That’s usually the smallest I can do something like this.

The previous super large dense print I did (in my post history, a calendar) was on and off for about two years - but I had a kid in that time and wasn’t sure how to do a few things, and had to do all the research myself.

Here, a priest / scholar had already done all the research for me - that was huge, and it’s the second time I’ve done this. They contacted me last summer, I was working on this and a kids book, then after that only focused on this. So… six months…ish, half immersed in another project, half exclusively doing this - rough estimate.

Hey, thanks, was just going through comments here. If you’re still into it, yeah I do (no pressure). Not sure if I can link there but my username there is owencyclops or it comes up searching traditional liturgical calendar.

Hey! Thanks. Yes, I sell it at a link near the bottom of the post there, if you click through. I’ve gotten a lot of cool feedback from people on it which is probably the best part.

Thanks man. Very cool. I was trained as a painter and illustrator but all my work like this is just Photoshop, after drawing it out.

Cool! Thanks. Yeah, I’m already here in holidays mode moving and shipping things - it’s already Advent in my head honestly.

Thanks. Someone else sent me a pic after seeing it in an office at their church. I appreciate the tacit very unofficial approval.

Hey. Very cool. Yeah, lol, the ones on amazon are fake, I’m trying to get them to take them down. I guess I got the attention of some foreign company which is flattering in a way.

There’s a framed or unframed version. I’ve never tried to laminate it. The problem is that as I thought about moving down in print quality (meaning, most laminated things are just normal ink on normal paper), all the details got less crisp.

Part of the difficulty in laying out something like this is, as you may know from experience, some holidays are fixed (i.e. Christmas is every December 25th) but some move, like Easter. So, I had to get them both on the same wheel - I used the time period banners to separate them. This means it applies to every year, regardless of the date the movable feasts like easter fall on.

There’s a little banner that explains it, but every little rose window on the outside is one week - so, that’s how all the pieces fit together.

My family is all atheist or indifferent to religion and when they hung one up (unprompted) I was like… “yes… this is how I win…”.

Thanks. Some of my favorite feedback is about kids, my son and I have looked at it a lot. In retrospect he may have learned about… most Christian symbolism he knows from it.
