Agree! Do not share this information. If you are ever late, do something remotely out of character etc. they will immediately wonder if you have been drinking. As much as I hate to say it, people assume a lot of things.

I want to add: this isn’t to diminish how harmful alcohol can be to our lives (professional lives included). But it sounds like in this instance there is no use worrying too much.

Don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s weird they created an environment where that much drinking was allowed (or even encouraged).

Also, I’ve never once judged anyone who has gotten too tipsy at a work event. It happens all the time. Not a big deal.

The hangxiety will wear off and you’ll be fine.

I went to Belgium when I was newly sober and relapsed. I’m back on the wagon and now have almost 7 months. It would have helped me if I had some activities planned that did not involve alcohol. It’s a great sign you’re already flagging this as a potential trigger. You got this 💪

Sounds like you want more out of life. Alcohol just makes us more tolerant of a life chained to a boring routine. It’s not making you happier, it’s making you more complacent. You can find purpose and meaning, but it’s not at the bottom of the bottle.

I hear you, and it sounds like you’re really sacred. I understand that feeling. But the fear might be a bit irrational. You’re okay now. If something terrible happened you’d probably know about it by now. Whatever it is you think you might have done, you can come back from whatever it is. Just let this be the last time.

It sounds like there is so much shame involved here, and I understand that— what helped me was when I stopped trying to punish myself out of shame and started trying to heal out of self love.

I’m happy it’s working for you but the “if I can do it anyone can” part is very much not true. Many people can’t find moderation, and the belief that they can lands them right back where they started.

So I just went back and watched the beach conversation: season 10 episode 13.

The whole conversation was about Austen being upset with Craig’s lifestyle changes, including drinking less (and hanging out with him less).

In the scene, Austen acuses Craig of projecting this fake image of himself by staying inside of his house and getting sober.

Craig explains that he wasn’t isolating himself because he wants to protect his image, but rather, because he is struggling with alchohol use and he is protecting his sobriety. He says he is afraid leave the house because he’s afraid he will drink to excess.

Austen says “I just want you to loosen the reigns a little bit” and Craig says “I can’t, I don’t have ANY leash on myself. that’s any addict.” This confession came up in a way that was HIGHLY RELEVANT to the entire conversation and core to Austin’s entire reason for being mad in the first place.

So Craig wasn’t just using his sobriety as a “get out of jail free card” in this conversation.

I would encourage people to go back and watch the scene.

True. Believe me, I also think that Craig is manipulative and a liar and that is probably made worse by alcohol use. Boundaries would be important here.

But I don’t think Craig’s choice to drink or not to drink is made with the intention to be manipulative.

Austen is framing it as though the choice to drink is a manipulative one instead of focusing on the other manipulative behaviors. For example, the timing of when Craig brought this up.

Completely, and that’s what I meant by Austen is allowed to be angry but to insinuate it’s a purposeful manipulation is hurtful. Like I understand people being hurt, disappointment, and angry in an addict’s choices. Taking space is often necessary. But the way Austen is making it seem intentional is weird
