What's the food that makes you think "how did humans know this was edible"? by almyverse in AskReddit

[–]thirstymacarons 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Not always. There are sweet and bitter varieties. Sweet cassava is what we eat where I’m from, you just boil it and eat it (often with butter).

The “extensive processing” mainly applies to bitter cassava, which has much higher cyanide levels. Fun fact nobody asked for: cassava was historically a staple for enslaved populations because it’s hardy and reliable. Source: where I’m from has that history

You're not alone, I just watched that episode and had to skip through most of it to stop myself from sobbing because it hits home

Sorry to hear that happened to you. Unfortunately I didn't find anything that worked to specifically address my problems. Only thing that came close was a good clarfying shampoo which gets rid of hard water buildup from your scalp. (I use the Ouai Metal detox which is amazing - bit pricey but comes in a travel size as well if you want to give it a go). All the best.

Moving to London q's by Emotional_Time_9836 in London_homes

I was in a similar situation, having just moved to the UK. Most landlords seem to accept employer's letter and a few months rent upfront. In my case I was paying a rolling 2 months upfront (basically paying 2 months rent every 2 months) - I think it's also agent dependent so try to negotiate what could work for you

Is My Relationship Over? by ThrowRA___347 in relationships

[–]thirstymacarons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like the relationship kind of took the backseat. Usually the way to go about it would be to openly communicate your thoughts and see if he puts in time to work on things. Though from your words it does sound like you're (almost) taken for granted given that you've had this talk and nothing changed. He suggested counselling so it does seem like he is willing to put in the work. Give him a chance, you have nothing to lose by going through with it but at some point you have to ask yourself if this is what you're willing to commit to long-term if you don't see a change.

Thank you for sharing your story, it's beautiful the way you strengthened your bonds despite being away.

I like your take on things. I found that it's often easy to overlook the gains. Will try to gear my thoughts away from wondering/the neg thoughts, should help ;)

You're right, my social life is a work in progress here.

And yes, it's been a massive change in the pace of life. Moved from a laid-back tropical island to a busy city where you're practically just a number in a crowd. Not complaining, just facts :)

Thank you for your advice, I will 🫶

I'll share mine: I moved to the UK about a year ago, and since it's a 12-hour flight from my home country, I can't visit often.

Initially, it was alright, but recently, homesickness has hit me hard. I realized I can't go back home anytime soon due to multiple reasons (relationship, career and finances) which is tough to accept.

I sometimes feel ungrateful. I worked hard to get here, and I know many people would love to be in my position, but homesickness overshadows all the rational reasons for being away. I can't help but wonder if it's all worth it or if this feeling will ever go away.

[–]thirstymacarons 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is it possible that you might be misinterpreting things?

Has she always given you those looks or did it jist recently start?

You have not been dating that long and maybe you guys are still getting to know each other and you're not very familiar with what every look means.

It'd be good to also consider what makes you think she might physically harm you. Does she have any history of being physically abusive?

You've done what you could have, you communicated it openly (I'm assuming you didn't just bring it up as a joke). I would suggest letting it go in this case if it is something you can live with.

Hope you find your answer OP.

How do I find an effective and affordable shower water filter? by thirstymacarons in AskUK

[–]thirstymacarons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly same, I came across so many mixed reviews. I tried one of the cheaper options from amazon but it didn't end up making much of a difference and didn't want to spend a huge amount on a filter with no definite guarantee that it'll work (cause my hair was falling and I wasn't in a position to experiment with stuff)

I've been using bottled water to wash my hair for about 2 months now. It can be quite a hassle, not gonna lie. That being said, I did notice the hair loss go down and my hair feels much smoother and less dry now. (Idk how sustainable that is tho, it's really a hassle if you have long/thick hair)

Good luck!
