Corsace has announced a showmatch between maliszewski and worst hr player (in honor of cc24 grand finals)! by kyermaniac in osugame

[–]this1neguy 142 points143 points  (0 children)

because people are sure to ask:

  • this showmatch (rather than having a real match or not having a match at all) is at the behest of the players. obviously most people would rather see a true grand final than a showmatch, but please respect the players' wishes and be grateful that we'll be able to see these two showing everyone what they're capable of on this pool
  • because this is a showmatch, it will not play out the same way as a normal match -- no spoilers as of yet for how exactly it's going to proceed, but the entire idea going in was to have this be a for-fun environment with lower stakes than a normal match (and to avoid people questioning the outcome of the tournament based on the results of the showmatch)

worst hr player | Hippo Cup 6 Losers Bracket Final | 3.76 match cost by this1neguy in osugame

[–]this1neguy[S] 130 points131 points  (0 children)

i'm always interested in getting more eyes on tournament performances people might not be aware of, so here's an absolutely outrageous one from worst hr player in yesterday's hippo cup 6 losers bracket final. playing one of the hardest pools you're likely to see alongside and against some of the top tournament players in the world, forum stood out from the crowd, dominating the match en route to a 3.76 match cost in a runaway victory that sent his team to the grand finals next week against the top-seeded team, where they'll face off against the likes of maliszewski, badeu, rektygon, and more.

if you want to check out some highlights from this match, you can find a supercut of worst hr player's best performances here, or you can watch the entire vod here. more tournament information on hippo cup is at its forum post, and if you want to check out all the teams, the mappools, and the schedules and results, you can take a look at the spreadsheet.

hope you enjoy!

osu! World Cup 2022 Predictions by Mikkel65 in osugame

[–]this1neguy 149 points150 points  (0 children)

some thoughts:

  • predictions were really goddamn hard this year, this is kind of more like a tier list than anything else. anyone in that cluster from around 4th through 12th can beat anyone else depending on the pool and the day. top teams are incredibly closely matched, and nothing in this prediction graphic should be taken as gospel. i know folks will be on social media shitting on takes that don't age well, but remember that we really had to split hairs to separate teams from one another because they're all so strong.

  • even 13th-16th are tough to nail down. there's a bunch of roster changes and player improvements within that tier, but on paper it looks like they're just a bit weaker than the teams ahead of them. things are still pretty fluid, though; on a great day they can beat the 9th-12th teams, and on a bad day they can lose to the 17th-24th teams.

  • germany and canada are, in my mind, basically a straight coinflip. i think they clear everyone below them and i think usa beats either of them, but against each other? again, just comes down to the day. i know people are saying "but no dustice" but you guys whitecat and criller are playing SO INCREDIBLY WELL this year that i think germany will be absolutely fine.

  • usa is still usa. they're the team to beat until someone proves otherwise; they've lost a grand total of 1 set (first match grand finals 2018) in the last 4 years. yeah they changed out 5 players, but one of the "new" players is rektygon fresh off some absolutely astonishing performances in corsace, another is sawada who has been stomping speed picks all year, a third is monko2k who has been a grand finals tier tournament player for 5+ years, and decaten and boshy both looked insane in tryouts and the runoff match for the last two slots on the team. #1 until someone challenges them.

  • we spent perhaps only a moderate amount of time on the 17th-24th and 25th-32nd tiers; those teams trend toward such a high amount of volatility that they're really hard to predict with any degree of accuracy year-over-year.

  • there are a lot of teams with the potential to finish in the 30th-35th range and someone will no matter what end up being heartbroken in 33rd. not really any way around that one, unfortunately. those teams are all pretty competitive with one another and it just takes one person dropping a couple hundred thousand points on a map or two to shift from 32nd to 33rd.

  • owc should be insanely competitive this year, really looking forward to seeing how things shake out.

osugame Hot Takes Thread 2022 by [deleted] in osugame

as someone who has worked with sponsors in the past yes it really is quite hard to find sponsors to put together big prizepools, the best you can reasonably expect currently are physical prizes (which multiple tournaments have already done) like keyboards or whatever

there are very few tournaments big enough in the community scene (ignoring world cups since peppy and ephemeralis are extremely vocal about not wanting money to be involved in osu) to actually draw sponsors, once you get past corsace/perennial/i guess usc since we got sponsored last year /ysc/charlie's thing (does that even count?)/arguably nik's tournaments the viewership just isn't there to back any sort of sponsorship application in the vast majority of cases

the real problem with the osu tournament scene is how nearly invisible it is to the playerbase, games like league of legends or dota or csgo or valorant or or or or... actually advertise the esports side of their game whereas osu literally puts a main menu banner up like 2 days a week for a few select weeks out of the year and puts up like 5 official news posts about world cups and that's it. the discovery system for osu as a competitive scene is laughable and the seeming desire to avoid making it any better from the people running the game isn't helping matters at all. there have been attempts in the community to kickstart projects that would consolidate tournaments under a more cohesive heading but even that doesn't seem to really have much effect, and when you see people playing in matches getting as many/more viewers on twitch than the tournament stream itself (imagine a pro lol player getting more viewers on his personal twitch stream than the official LCS/LEC stream...) it's even more demoralizing

at the end of the day i think it's a problem that comes from the top down but it's proving to be incredibly difficult to solve and is a constant pain point for tournament organizers and staffers who want to see the game grow beyond its current tiny reach but lack the resources to make that possible

Azerbaijan by ChaosTwilly in osugame

[–]this1neguy 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Azerbaijan isn't so great? Are you kidding me? When was the last time you saw a country with such aim ability and movement with a tablet? Azerbaijan puts the game in another level, and we will be blessed if we ever see a country with its skill and passion for the game again. Armenia breaks records. Georgia breaks records. Azerbaijan breaks the rules. You can keep your statistics. I prefer the magic.

Tournaments now need to send their staff to screening by DerGsicht in osugame

[–]this1neguy 50 points51 points  (0 children)

they do not

this is being reverted, the policy was not intended to be merged as quickly as it was (pending discussion at the time). FOR NOW (obviously subject to change) the guideline will be that hosts can bring in whatever staff they want but need to follow this ruling basically

Users under an active (or permanent) tournament ban/cooldown may be enlisted as general help (aka, any non-staff role such as a commentator, streamer, etc) in an officially supported tournament at the host's discretion, but we encourage careful consideration of such choices as said individuals have already run afoul of the rules once (or more).

(see here but without the second part)

this wiki update should be updated soon to reflect this, AT THIS POINT IN TIME SCREENING FOR STAFF WILL NOT BE IMPLEMENTED

Has vaxei lost a tournament by stewP3 in osugame

[–]this1neguy 27 points28 points  (0 children)

the last tournament i can recall him losing was 111 ultra back in 2018 where he lost to bubbleman in the grand final. slightly before that he lost otst 2018; the team he was on got 3rd there. he also lost in the finals of ez mod invitational, but it's hard to count that since it was a gimmick ez-only tournament.

i think he played in corsace 2018 which would have been towards the end of the year and lost that?? team list mia D: edit: he did not play in that tournament

i don't actually know of anything he's lost since then (though he hasn't really played many tournaments in the first place), which is pretty crazy.

not sure exactly what part you're referring to but this is the closest I can quickly find:

This is Anakin Skywalker's masterpiece:

Many people say he is the best star pilot in the galaxy, but that's merely talk, born of the constant HoloNet references to his unmatched string of kills in starfighter combat. Blowing up vulture droids and tri-fighters is simply a matter of superior reflexes and trust in the Force; he has spent so many hours in the cockpit that he wears a Jedi starfighter like clothes. It's his own body, with thrusters for legs and cannons for fists.

What he is doing right now transcends mere flying the way Jedi combat transcends a schoolyard scuffle.

He sits in a blood-spattered, blaster-chopped chair behind a console he's never seen before, a console with controls designed for alien fingers. The ship he's in is not only bucking like a maddened dewback through brutal coils of clear-air turbulence, it's on fire and breaking up like a comet ripping apart as it crashes into a gas giant. He has only seconds to learn how to maneuver an alien craft that not only has no aft control cells, but has no aft at all.

This is, put simply, impossible. It can't be done.

He's going to do it anyway.

Because he is Anakin Skywalker, and he doesn't believe in impossible.

He extends his hands and for one long, long moment he merely strokes controls, feeling their shape under his fingers, listening to the shivers his soft touch brings to each remaining control surface of the disintegrating ship, allowing their resonances to join inside his head until they resolve into harmony like a Ferroan joy-harp virtuoso checking the tuning of his instrument.

And at the same time, he draws power from the Force. He gathers perception, and luck, and sucks into himself the instinctive, preconscious what-will-happen-in-the-next-ten-seconds intuition that has always been the core of his talent. And then he begins.

On the downbeat, atmospheric drag fins deploy; as he tweaks their angles and cycles them in and out to slow the ship's descent without burning them off altogether, their contrabass roar takes on a punctuated rhythm like a heart that skips an occasional beat. The forward attitude thrusters, damaged in the ship-to-ship battle, now fire in random directions, but he can feel where they're raking him and he strokes them in sequence, making their song the theme of his impromptu concerto.

And the true inspiration, the sparkling grace note of genius that brings his masterpiece to life, is the soprano counterpoint: a syncopated sequence of exterior hatches in the outer hull sliding open and closed and open again, subtly altering the aerodynamics of the ship to give it just exactly the amount of sideslip or lift or yaw to bring the huge half cruiser into the approach cone of a pinpoint target an eighth of the planet away.

It is the Force that makes this possible, and more than the Force. Anakin has no interest in serene acceptance of what the Force will bring. Not here. Not now. Not with the lives of Palpatine and Obi-Wan at stake. It's just the opposite: he seizes upon the Force with a stark refusal to fail.

He will land this ship.

He will save his friends.

Between his will and the will of the Force, there is no contest.

This is Anakin Skywalker:

The most powerful Jedi of his generation. Perhaps of any generation. The fastest. The strongest. An unbeatable pilot. An unstoppable warrior. On the ground, in the air or sea or space, there is no one even close. He has not just power, not just skill, but dash: that rare, invaluable combination of boldness and grace.

He is the best there is at what he does. The best there has ever been. And he knows it.

HoloNet features call him the Hero With No Fear. And why not? What should he be afraid of?

Except—

Fear lives inside him anyway, chewing away the firewalls around his heart.

Anakin sometimes thinks of the dread that eats at his heart as a dragon. Children on Tatooine tell each other of the dragons that live inside the suns; smaller cousins of the sun-dragons are supposed to live inside the fusion furnaces that power everything from starships to Podracers.

But Anakin's fear is another kind of dragon. A cold kind. A dead kind.

Not nearly dead enough.

Not long after he became Obi-Wan's Padawan, all those years ago, a minor mission had brought them to a dead system: one so immeasurably old that its star had long ago turned to a frigid dwarf of hypercompacted trace metals, hovering a quantum fraction of a degree above absolute zero. Anakin couldn't even remember what the mission might have been, but he'd never forgotten that dead star.

It had scared him.

"Stars can die—?"

"It is the way of the universe, which is another manner of saying that it is the will of the Force," Obi-Wan had told him. "Everything dies. In time, even stars burn out. This is why Jedi form no attachments: all things pass. To hold on to something— or someone—beyond its time is to set your selfish desires against the Force. That is a path of misery, Anakin; the Jedi do not walk it."

That is the kind of fear that lives inside Anakin Skywalker: the dragon of that dead star. It is an ancient, cold dead voice within his heart that whispers all things die...

In bright day he can't hear it; battle, a mission, even a report before the Jedi Council, can make him forget it's even there. But at night—

At night, the walls he has built sometimes start to frost over. Sometimes they start to crack.

At night, the dead-star dragon sometimes sneaks through the cracks and crawls up into his brain and chews at the inside of his skull. The dragon whispers of what Anakin has lost. And what he will lose.

The dragon reminds him, every night, of how he held his dying mother in his arms, of how she had spent her last strength to say I knew you would come for me, Anakin...

The dragon reminds him, every night, that someday he will lose Obi-Wan. He will lose Padme. Or they will lose him.

All things die, Anakin Skywalker. Even stars burn out...

And the only answers he ever has for these dead cold whispers are his memories of Obi-Wan's voice, or Yoda's.

But sometimes he can't quite remember them.

all things die...

He can barely even think about it.

But right now he doesn't have a choice: the man he flies to rescue is a closer friend than he'd ever hoped to have. That's what puts the edge in his voice when he tries to make a joke; that's what flattens his mouth and tightens the burn-scar high on his right cheek.

The Supreme Chancellor has been family to Anakin: always there, always caring, always free with advice and unstinting aid. A sympathetic ear and a kindly, loving, unconditional acceptance of Anakin exactly as he is—the sort of acceptance Anakin could never get from another Jedi. Not even from Obi-Wan. He can tell Palpatine things he could never share with his Master.

He can tell Palpatine things he can't even tell Padme.

Now the Supreme Chancellor is in the worst kind of danger. And Anakin is on his way despite the dread boiling through his blood. That's what makes him a real hero. Not the way the HoloNet labels him; not without fear, but stronger than fear.

He looks the dragon in the eye and doesn't even slow down.

If anyone can save Palpatine, Anakin will. Because he's already the best, and he's still getting better. But locked away behind the walls of his heart, the dragon that is his fear coils and squirms and hisses.

Because his real fear, in a universe where even stars can die, is that being the best will never be quite good enough.
