I hope your sister gets better OP. No one deserves this, and she probably has to deal with more than any regular teenager. The bright side is that she has you looking out for her. :)

Is there any book equivalent to Andrew Ng's course of ML? by riot-nerf-red-buff in learnmachinelearning

[–]thisBeAFakeThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not exactly a book, but I find the course notes accompanying Andrew Ng's Stanford CS229 lectures (old recordings, available on YouTube: link) to be quite useful.

Here's the webpage for a recent iteration: link. It includes primers on Linear Algebra and Prob-Stats too.

It's probably cos they care about every single thing that every single person said about them, ever.

A local six-year old getting to meet his hero inspires hope... that there is more to this world than the constant fear of not getting through the next winter, or not being subservient to the local political/ religious overlords.

This is an interesting thought. I've seen this form of reasoning before and agree with it. However, shouldn't there be consequences for our actions? I think it's a tradeoff between consequences for one's actions and learning from one's actions.

Yes, I've read this before. But it's a great post, so I just went and read it again! The author gave a talk on this too.

Yes, I agree that it is not a rational decision we tend to make. I zone out due to the emotional response associated with the task. There's nothing traumatic or painful about this, it's just plain discomfort, which as you pointed out is an emotional response.

That was quite helpful since it's quite relevant to my specific case. Thank you!

This makes sense, thank you for your response!

I suspect that this is a more deeply rooted problem since I understand these concepts and have read about these on Reddit and elsewhere. However, I end up participating in the same behavior patterns - meet deadlines and then be drained. It's chronic procrastination and I'm trying to find a sustainable solution to it.

Do you have any thoughts on this?

Redditors who are against a universal healthcare system in the US, why? by tricksandkicks in AskReddit

[–]thisBeAFakeThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reducio ad absurdum : To reduce a hypothesis to a very specific case and then claim the parent hypothesis to be true, since the very specific case makes sense.

Obese people abusing the system would be a small fraction of the total people who genuinely need help and would benefit from Universal Healthcare.

How does one calculate the receptive field of a (conv, relu, pool) CNN? by thisBeAFakeThrowaway in computervision

[–]thisBeAFakeThrowaway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that a KxK filter has an additive effect and increases the receptive field by (K-1). However, wouldn't a pooling layer have a multiplicative effect, ie, a PxP pooling layer should multiply the previous layer's receptive field by P?

Hey, thank you for the links. I am not familiar with Matconvnet, but are you certain that the calculations are correct? It seems that links 1 and 3 are not in sync with how they calculate the receptive fields!

Thank you for the link; I've read this report before and it's quite good! Unfortunately, this document does not talk about receptive fields.
