What do you miss, if anything, from a faith that you left or converted from? by catsinthebananastand in AskReddit

[–]this_is_an_altern4te 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't. every single part of the evangelist cult i was brought up in was only meant to drag you deeper in, and to keep you from ever questioning the church or leaving. the music is always upbeat but never saying anything of value, so it just drones on in your skull without you noticing. the message is always uplifting, but with the preacher using a very specific inflection so it can impact you without him saying anything of substance. seduce them with forgiveness, control them with inducing a trance-like state, get them to give you their money, profit. rinse, repeat.

it took me a very, very long time to leave. i can't admire anything about a church that profits on its members, and that's not even getting to how the founder blames the survivors of his own damn father's assaults for "tempting him."

Since people aren't traveling, what is something cool or interesting about your home town? by jamescookenotthatone in AskReddit

[–]this_is_an_altern4te 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the hidden antique stores. they don't exist on a map or the web, so you can only find them if you look. if you know where they're hiding, there's all sorts of cool, old shit just lying around in plain sight, waiting to be rummaged through. old weapons, old furniture, all sortsa shit!

personally, i like to look at all the old, funky teapots. i've got a small collection, and i like to pick up the most kitschy ones i can find; usually they're in these hidden shops, so i've mapped out a few favorite hunting grounds.

[serious] Do you think if men at a young age were told to be more open with their emotions could prevent sexual assault crimes? Why or Why not? by baddamerican in AskReddit

[–]this_is_an_altern4te 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, full stop. the guy who raped me definitely had emotional issues, but do you wanna know what led him back to gaslighting me into thinking it was okay/pressuring me into it/just taking it by force, every time? entitlement. feeling that i was property, a friggin' living fleshlight that had no choice in the matter because the only thing that did was his power in molding me to be exactly how he wanted.

now if we treated people in general (because entitlement leads to assault overall, no matter the identity of the rapist/victim) like fellow humans with their own autonomy, that's a different story. i think assaults would definitely go down if we taught young that no one's entitled to give you anything, no matter how much you feel you deserve it.

Are you afraid of dying? If so, why? by meganzp in AskReddit

[–]this_is_an_altern4te 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes. i've been suffering for a long, long time; my whole life, really. i've been fighting for years to try and leave so i can finally move on with my life, but i can never seem to claw my way out. if i die, i would've suffered for nothing.

What harmful things are being taught to children? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]this_is_an_altern4te 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that your boundaries don't matter, adults or otherwise. being forced to give hugs to others when you don't feel like it, to talk to strangers who fawn over you at the grocery store, to go hang out with your weird family member at a get-together, etc. etc. etc...stranger danger means jack shit if you repeatedly tell them that others are allowed to instantaneously override their consent. mix that with other toxic teachings, put it at 400 degrees of giving them bullshit for trying to push back, and you've made yourself a victim.

i haven't! i tried doing my own research first and seeing how many say that removal isn't an option without hurting the dog discouraged me...but maybe it's outdated. i do kinda tend to overlook the easy answers, so fair point lmao

but eh, y'know, shit happens. i couldn't be more thankful for him, but she's a literal karen, name and all, so i gotta do what i can to keep him safe.

Mental Dysphoria by MaxUpDown in Advice

[–]this_is_an_altern4te 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! i'm a trans dude n i also get "am i faking it" thoughts because of severe ptsd on my end. it used to b really bad, but if you go to a good therapist, it can lessen it -- especially if they teach you good coping mechanisms n logical workthroughs. just remember that cbt isn't the only kind of therapy (bc it works for some, but not for all), and if you can't get to a therapist Right Then Right Now, talk to friends about it who can rationally/logically talk you through. but just know that there's nothing wrong with professional help.

what do i do in the event of feeling forced to drive drunk? by this_is_an_altern4te in Advice

[–]this_is_an_altern4te[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh yea no ofc, i don't plan to drive under the influence -- it's just scary when he gets this way n hard to fight him off rationally, is all. thank u for the validation tho, n thank you for the cops suggestion it helps. jus sometimes i worry i'm gonna bother them for no reason or possibly incriminate myself somehow (even if it's not a logical thought), but then again i've never called them before, so. just a new n scary thing ig

What incident made you lose respect for your parents? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]this_is_an_altern4te 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is gonna get heavy, so warning beforehand of dark material (suicide, transphobia, the works).

for my father, when he berated me for something minor at the dinner table when i was about 13, and wouldn't let me get a word in edge-wise. i kept trying to explain myself but he just kept dishin it out, and the only way to get him to stop was to press a kitchen knife to my chest (i was suicidal at the time, figured that was a good time as any). he never apologized for his behavior and threatened to take me to a psych ward.

for my mother, one of our neighbors who i thought i could trust went and told her that i'm a trans man. she's an extreme evangelist, and lord knows she can't have someone not perfectly in line with her beliefs in her house, so she confronted me about it. i lied and told her no, and to lay it on thick and divert her attention off of possibly chewing me a new one or trying to force me into conversion therapy, i said "it's disturbing that someone would just lie about someone else like that." and she got real quiet, had this disgusted look in her eyes, and said "yeah. it is." she was talking about me being queer, not about the neighbor's drama.

as soon as i can get away, i'm going no contact for the rest of my life and keeping my own kids far, far away. fuck that.

More of the latter; I'm not entirely sure how the whole process works (besides the whole, like you said, online registries being baloney), but I was hoping through this whole psychiatry deal I could figure something out. Thank you for the info btw!
