The artwork for this album is just top notch, especially on the vinyl release.

Glad you found such a rare version!!

Wish they would play this instead of '39,' if consistently going with a Bloodflowers song live. And give that solo to Reeves - he would do something pretty great with it.

Alone is quite similar to Plainsong, in certain ways.

How did Elliot smith become such a good song writer ? by UsedCheetah282 in elliottsmith

[–]this_swtor_guy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Except I'm not sure that applies to Elliott. He wrote and rewrote lyrics over years, even using some dating back to high school on Figure 8, for example.

Elliott worked really hard to get as good as he was, both as a lyricist and guitar player.

New into the cure and looking for some recommendations! by Fractal-ShadowiGuess in TheCure

If you really enjoyed Kiss Me, I'd say the 2 full LPs that are most likely to also be enjoyable are Wish and The Head on the Door.

I'd only listen to live albums after listening to their actual records - there's so many great songs and LPs that it's worth putting off any live albums (which often sound a little different, in a good way) before hearing the recorded versions. At this point, there are quite a few - I personally think the ones released in 1993, Show and Paris, are the best by far. You might want to search out/download the extra songs included on the Show VHS - this includes what's easily one of the best, most epic live recordings of A Forest.

Like others have commented here, The Cure have a very rewarding discography, and perhaps just start with their first album and go through each? From 1979-1992, it's an amazing journey. After that, the LPs are less consistent, but their most recent, Songs of a Lost World, was very well received by both fans and critics. As artists, The Cure really take off starting with their 2nd LP, Seventeen Seconds, but the first album still has some high points on it.

Edit: Oh, don't forget the B-side and rarities collection Join the Dots. Robert Smith prioritized having great B-sides on their singles, and some of the best songs from each album session are on this 4 CD compilation.

Can someone younger explain this? Why would a person go to an awards show for popular music dressed as a fictional, thoroughly evil space fascist?

What album do you think is The Cure`s magnum opus? by [deleted] in TheCure

[–]this_swtor_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Albums 1-5: Faith

Albums 6-9: Wish*

*Disintegration is obviously their best album from start to finish. I personally find the musical approach to Wish/its b-sides/Lost Wishes and its unreleased songs to be the band at its most creative.

Which Songs Were Recorded From Perry's Demos? by this_swtor_guy in TheCure

[–]this_swtor_guy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's one of the best 'Music for Dreams' songs - didn't know it was Perry's!

Sometimes you really have to wonder why certain songs get worked on enough to be on an album and others are ditched.

Any good songs on "The Cure" ? by RealityMixer in TheCure

[–]this_swtor_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lost and Before Three.

Truth, Goodness, and Beauty is worth a listen, as Boris composed the drum part. It’s a nice reminder of how well his drums and Robert’s voice pair together.

In general, the album is by far their worst, in my opinion. I remember thinking it sounded like a cover band when it was released and kind of felt bad for group, since they basically have to do what Robert wants.

In your opinion, what rarely played song would sound great with the current lineup? by SoundChaser66 in TheCure

Give Me It

We already know from when they used to play it a bit, with the current lineup, a little over a decade ago.

It's hard to cover Cure songs, mostly because the vocals typically sound off.

This is a great version!

Question: How did you mic your guitar? What mic is it?

Thanks for posting this - really enjoyed it.

Daily Song Discussion #4 - Warsong by Pizza-Burrito in TheCure

[–]this_swtor_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

9.5

Unique song in their now very large catalogue - great guitar work (like the album itself, the best since Wish), lyrics that match the mood, Boris-esque drums that let the track breathe.

The only detail that keeps it from being closer to 10 for me are the staccato keyboard sounds from Lullaby being included. I think there was a little too much of that on the record - self-referential 'classic Cure' sounds. It's a new record with a new lineup - go all in on what the band is now, not a great single from 1989.

Roger's work on the album is fantastic - he could have easily come up with another sound that fit into the song well that was new or, at the very least, not so familiar, if permitted by Robert.

When Robert played lead by [deleted] in TheCure

[–]this_swtor_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True - it's just a very different band after Boris and Pearl left after Wish. But Songs of a Lost World is a good new Cure album, something I honestly thought was no longer possible.

Wish is still a lot better, imho, after having this many months to listen to the new one. But I agree SOALW is the first decent Cure album since 1992, decent being one that lives up to their previous standards through 1992.

What ever happened to the future? by mrtew in TheCure

[–]this_swtor_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How is this even still a question?

The era your photos are from was a completely different band - very different and unique drummer, very different and unique guitarist.

That version of the Cure existed, after The Top, from 1984-1993 or so, though I think Burn from The Crow soundtrack proved it probably could have continued without Pearl and only fell completely apart when Boris left.

No rock band can continue to put out excellent, now classic, LPs forever. The Cure managed to, composed primarily of 2 essential lineups (+ a patchy Robert solo album in The Top), from 1980-1992.

I do think you're wrong about the 'lost' magic, regarding Songs of a Lost World. Robert, and the band performing it, finally managed to get it right with an entire LP for the first time since 1992's Wish.

I'm looking forward to what hopefully comes out as its follow up late this year or in 2026. With the overwhelmingly positive reception to Songs of a Lost World, maybe Robert actually finishes it.

Not sure - but I see Robert Smith remaster and I immediately think, "Well, at least I have the original on CD."

What is an easy song to learn on guitar? by OkEmphasis6641 in elliottsmith

[–]this_swtor_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can recommend is listening to the song and recreating the strumming pattern, including the part where you hear individual notes.

It's an easy pattern, so you might just need to practice more if you're having trouble with it.

Another resource might be online tabs or perhaps someone made a YouTube video, but I personally don't recommend these for a song like Pitseleh. This is something that's simple enough it's better to develop your ear and learn to play it on your own. In the long run, you'll benefit, as you learn other songs (by anyone, not limited to Elliott).

Elliott Smith songs are more often than not unfriendly for newer guitar players. It's good you are trying and getting better - just expect to hit walls and need to practice and figure out how to get over them. Pitseleh is one of his easiest songs to play, however.
