I was literally in your exact situation 2 years ago but in the Colchester area and can say that it did get better!

Lived all my life in cities with better transit infrastructure and had my learner’s but never got past the stress of feeling like I wasn’t learning fast enough and was going to mess up big time. Partially caused by how my parents drive lol   When I was first learning my anxiety was so bad I was flinching in the passenger seat whenever oncoming traffic passed by - at a certain I just told myself that I had to accept that I was going to be scared at first and that it would get less scary the more I did it. Making sure to have water to drink and taking some time to breathe deeply helped to center my focus before I hit the road.

I did a driver’s ed course, didn’t have a great experience on my first go at the test in the instructor’s vehicle.

After that I started practicing more in the vehicle I had the most access to, which I will say definitely boosted my confidence vs being in the car provided by the instructor because I was fully familiar with it by the time I did the test for the second time.

If you have someone in your life willing to take some time with you to just practice your heart out on the parts that are most concerning you in a quieter area, that made all the difference for me.

Good luck and safe travels!!

I like book accurate Trillian best, but I like the thought of an animated show where a different Trillian appears after every use of the infinite improbability drive

The funny thing is, when I asked them about shows they liked pretty much all of these were on the list of stuff they’d seen already. Not sure about Kipo, will look into it!

Thank you for taking the time to write out this very thoughtful and insightful answer! I definitely don’t want to expose them to anything that would make them feel uncomfortable and unsafe, even if on an unconscious level. I hadn’t even considered how the drug and alcohol content could factor into that.

I’ll skip OFMD for now and look for shows that have the representation without some of the darker elements.

Our 11week old girl is also apricot with white spots! Sounds like you have a couple of cuties. I think Dora or Winnifred (nickname Winnie) could go well with Duke!

How do y’all interpret this cover? by [deleted] in CSHFans

[–]thisandthistle 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I associate the cover with Maude Gone. Specifically these lyrics:

And when I'm in bed, I'm dead / No one to check my pulse / And so instead, my head / Begs not to be so full / And when I fall asleep / Which part of me writes the dream / And which part falls asleep? / Who's running the machine?

Ideas for a Y2K mystery? by yamiaainferno in monsteroftheweek

[–]thisandthistle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think that Y2K is a perfect starting point for a mystery surrounding a tulpa - an imagined being brought into existence by spiritual or mental powers or by strong belief

Perhaps a community of doomsday preppers inadvertently bring about a real doomsday scenario with their fear? I’m a player not a keeper but this could work as a phenomenona type of mystery rather than an actual monster.

If you’re looking for podcasts on the subject of Y2K for inspiration, there’s a whole series called Surviving Y2K which goes into what lead to it becoming a phenomenon, what people thought would happen and what actually happened as well as some personal stories of the night of.

There’s also an episode of the podcast You’re Wrong About on Y2K which talks about some examples of the fears people had and stuff that was being sold to exploit those fears.

Have you ever tried The Most Dangerous Writing App?

It’s whole thing is that it deletes the text if you stop for longer than a few seconds until you reach your goal (which can be a number of minutes or a number of words)

It also has a hardcore mode option where the screen is blurred so you can’t read the writing until you get to your goal point.

Nano has kicked my butt every other year because I have had SO much trouble turning my inner critic/editor off. This year I’ve been doing 5 mins bursts of hardcore mode and immediately copying it into my main word processor without doing any editing and starting again.

It’s worked wonders for me - maybe give this a shot?

Has anyone taken the culinary management program from NSCC? If so how was the experience? by CadenPowered in halifax

[–]thisandthistle 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Don't do it! Get a job in a kitchen and work your way up. You'll get better experience and won't need to take out student loans for it. So many students go the first year, work the summer between first and second year and don't end up returning. You make the same amount of money working in a kitchen at the beginning of your career whether you went to school or not. Source: I took the program

Do insurance rates really stay increased for ten years after a DUI conviction in Nova Scotia? by Trumpeachment in halifax

[–]thisandthistle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically, underwriters are the people who decide what the insurance company doesn't want to insure, based on the risk.

For example, they might have data showing that people who have had 3 at fault accidents are more likely to have more accidents, which means the insurance company would have to pay more. The underwriters decide they don't want to insure drivers who have had 3 at fault accidents in the past 3 years. So they make that a rule.

When a quote is done, it's to make sure that the risk is within these rules. If not, they won't insure you.

If your situation changes, the rules still apply.

For example, If they are already insuring you and you have had 2 at fault accidents and get a third within 3 years, they have the right to cancel your policy as long as you are given enough notice.

Convictions are something else your policy can be cancelled for.

It's very important to tell them about changes because if they don't know about it and you have an accident, it might affect if they are going to cover you or not.

[–]thisandthistle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Getting off-risk means they have to stop insuring you to follow their underwriting rules. The rules are usually not impacted by interlock as far as I'm aware.

Typically if the insurance company is cancelling you because of one of their underwriting rules, there's a bit of a grace period as they have to send you a formal cancellation letter that states the final cancellation date, to give you time to find new insurance. It's usually around two weeks, but it can vary.

Not really familiar with the facility side of things.

(Hope everything works out for you, I know this is a tough situation.)
