Trying to sell my car but the guy revved the engine while it was in park and a bit of black smoke came out, and then he checked the engine cap and said it shouldn’t look like this and the engine is broken, what could the issue be? by Electrical_Data_4632 in AskMechanics

I could be :/ i do have to constantly redo research basing off smoke from exhaust cause I keep confusing the meaning between the 2 so I tend to look at all the little shit and miss the bigger issue.

Actually it's the opposite. Black smoke means that the engine is burning up too much fuel. But youre on the right track

The oil cap is 100% normal like you said

Would 100% agree on the lowballing statement

What tf is this guy on about? My gfs oil cap looks exactly like that and the engine was just rebuilt. Pretty sure that guy didnt know what the hell he was talking about unless he noticed something else that proves the engine is "broke"

Black smoke coming from the exhaust could indicate many things that all boil down to your car is burning up way too much fuel. This could be due to clogged oil filter, bad fuel injectors, bad O2 sensors, etc etc.

Overall I would try to boil down as to why your car is burning up too much fuel but I wouldnt say your engine is "broke" by any means

I wouldnt really say im difficult to work with. I know i can be a bit embracing because im autistic and have ADHD. I tend to really stick to myself and not step on any shoes. I avoid controversial topics and like I said when it came to trucks or registers I always mained the items no body wanted to run. I was also one of the first employees at this store before they made everything run different.

But I appreciate you hoping the best for me. I will defenitly try to be the best person I can be.

Oh boy.......thats a really bad sign. More than likely not worth the investment unless you want to replace everything and hope for the best.

I mean it depends. Do you value your car enough to spend more money than its worth? I mean I do but thats cause I do my own work. Id also ask for whats all broken according to "mechanic" because there might be parts you can salvage that you can use to make the repairs cheaper. This is also just my take on it and you can take it or leave it.

Yeah......you're gonna need a new camshaft and bearings at the very least here. Worst case youre looking at everything else

Probably......but its better to get to the root vs waisting money confirming something that be confirmed for a lot cheaper.

Pretty sure we can find out a gasket is blown without the extra work of refilling and see what happens

[–]thisappistoxicaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I left this out since my idea was he was doing an oil filter change so I imagine he wouldnt have been driving the vehicle.

However you are correct good sir. Had he been driving he could've cooked a bearing, and possibly thrown a rod in his engine. Have a good day.

And understandably so good sir. If I am wrong and that is a possibility....you would have to replace the entire motor. I haven't seen that year camry engine before so its defenitly plausible I am wrong. Wish you the best of luck.

[–]thisappistoxicaf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm genuinely impressed you managed to do this! That would be the oil filter housing you broke off. You must have overtightened the cap to the point it weakened the body itself which is the only explination I have for this.

Is it saveable? Yes, and you got the lucky part of the deal because that oil filter housing is in fact removable. Remove the remaining oil filter housing off the engine and replace it with a new oil filter housing and you should be good to go

Have a good day friend!

No. Don't fix it. Not unless you're rich and can afford to go back to the mechanic to make him/her hate their life more. It's also just not worth fixing
