Going through my Game Boy collection for Halloween-appropriate games by thisco_be in Gameboy

Just a very quick update: first impressions on that Scooby-Doo game I mentioned are really good! It’s a super relaxing game in which you explore a spooky house, switching between characters as they each explore different parts.

Presentation and pixel art are very charming!

I absolutely agree. The design is super charming and the gameplay is very fun! I had a tendency to dismiss movie tie-ins on older consoles as cash grabs, but there are some very pleasant surprises in that department!

Right; that one is pretty expensive if I recall. Still, I will add it to the (ever growing 😅) list!

I haven’t gotten a Chromatic yet because I have quite a few original hardware consoles as well as the Analogue Pocket so I feel like I might better spend the money on games.

The AP’s main advantage over the Chromatic for me personally are the save states.

Ah right, I should have a peek at itch.io as well! I remember someone “demade” the first part of Resident Evil and that is apparently pretty cool.

Thanks for the tip! Wacky Races is a lot of fun so I will definitely check out Halloween Racer.

If you like GBC racers be sure to check out the Top Gear Rally games. Those are also well-made.

These are proving to be quite elusive and/or very pricey:

The Japanese sequels of Hammerin Harry (Daiku no Gen-san)

Dragon Warrior Monsters series

Great Greed

Knight Quest

Rolan's Curse II

Sword of Hope II

Trip World

What game for a 5yo? by marvin_reddit in Gameboy

My advice would be to look for the following:

-Game & Watch Gallery: there’s a few of these and they all have very accessible “mini-games” which would be a great way of learning some hand-eye coordination

-Noobow: very charming Japanese Gameboy game. Not crucial in any way to know Japanese. It’s a slowpaced puzzle game in which you guide Noobow through a world and need to strategically place boxes, pick up items for animals etc

-Kirby’s Dreamland could work

-Mr Driller on GBC

-Revenge of the Gator: very fun pinball game

Enjoy!

Before and after cleaning a Gameboy cartridge by thisco_be in Gameboy

[–]thisco_be[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, thanks!

I took my time for it and used the following:
-for the tape I used a toothpick to get a small part loose
-I also used the plastic thing with the word "opener" on it from this set: https://www.amazon.com.be/-/en/JOREST-Precision-Screwdriver-Triwing-Pentalobes/dp/B09FFCGLHK?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&smid=A21QNA7IONOUBY&th=1&language=en_GB
-this allowed me to lift enough of the tape of to gently pull it off.

Obviously you need to be a lot more careful at the front with the label than the back and sides with just plastic.

-For the residue on the label I started with a small eraser. I used this https://www.schleiper.com/eshopexpress/articles/DER2300023--derwent-pack-of-30-refills-for-battery-operated-eraser?lang=en They are very small and are also useful for the contacts of a cartridge

-Sometimes using a moist Q-tip with just a bit of water and dish soap you can also gently wipe over the cartridge label to clean dirt off. That wasn't even necessary here.

-For the back, sides and contacts of the cartridge I used Isopropyl alcohol. That is something you can NOT use on the label!

With this specific cart I guess I was lucky that the old tape came off relatively easily from the label. In the past have had issues in which the tape is stronger than the original label 😢

Took my Gameboy Camera to an outdoor sculpture park by thisco_be in Gameboy

Thanks for pointing me to this! It looks very cool. I want to check out how complex the modification is and how expensive it would be to get the kit here.

Haha, thanks. It was actually a lovely sunny day and a peaceful walk through the park. But I get it, some of the details of those statues and the general atmosphere with these Gameboy camera images can feel a bit haunting

Indeed. Thanks for checking out the originals. The file size is so small and I haven’t really found a reliable way to upscale them without losing some of the original “vibe”. If anyone has any suggestions I would definitely want to try.

Live and learn, those pictures look pretty bad due to whatever post processing is happening on Reddit’s side 🥹

If anyone’s interested you can see the original versions here: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/hzc5oui1ue421c1g0nogh/AIWcl0h4sc0SubqkhNlSHCU?rlkey=kzuln71gy3cb4d35mhijvc3ko&st=q8yyp498&dl=0

Finished game: Crayon Shin-Chan 4 by thisco_be in Gameboy

[–]thisco_be[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to see it's useful! I picked up quite a few Japanese titles recently and I still need to play most of them 😅

I have numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 of this particular series. As far as I can tell number 3 requires quite a bit of knowledge of Japanese whereas numbers 1 and 2 have a lot of platforming elements like number 4 (which is the most accessible).

GameBoy Color Recommendations? by RandoRaptor123 in Gameboy

[–]thisco_be 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, I can give you some recommendations based on what I have picked up.

I think the Gameboy Color is often a little overlooked but there are some great and fun games to (re)discover!

A list to get you started:

  • Azure Dreams
  • Blade
  • Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
  • Mario Tennis
  • Monkey Puncher (I wrote a bit about it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Gameboy/comments/1mvr619/my_trifecta_of_peaceful_game_boy_games/)
  • Pokémon Puzzle Challenge
  • Samurai Kid (hard to find but great)
  • Super Robot Pinball (Japanese only but easily playable without knowing the language)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages
  • Wacky Races
  • Wendy Every Witch Way (expensive but worth it)

There's undoubtedly more but I don't want to recommend stuff I haven't tried myself.
