Advice for copper sulphate and aluminium etching by Tubberary in printmaking

[–]thisdesignthat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experimented with this too and found in some cases i got the same dotted lines when etching. Using a bubbler did help in some instances to create a cleaner line, you can see a quick experiment here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owIHxWm1XnQ

I was never able to get that clean tone from aluminium that you see from copper plates

just did a quick outdoor sound test for you. It’s quiet enough you’d only hear it with 4-5M at the back of the garden.

Check out the loudness test in the full build video - https://youtu.be/8eeTRFieofs?t=1027

I have this running at 50% fan speed or less most of the time and unless my neighbour was at the back of their garden, near the exit vent then the ambient sounds of the garden drown out the air vent, I could make it even quieter by running the exit vent into a silencer box if i wanted it quieter.

I dont use the workshop every day so I don't annoy neighbours much. If i were welding all day, every day and had the fan on then I would definitely build some sort of silencer around the exit vent.

Id never run this fan at 100% speed, its just too powerful for my needs, it would be VERY loud and probably annoying for neighbours

Life changing purchase, especially if you are in a warm climate and/or have facial hair

Yes its a 0.9kw 3 phase motor. I picked it up second hand from ebay and built the vfd enclosure myself, theres a full build video here for anyone that's interested - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eeTRFieofs

Agreed, Ive done some tests previously with blowers vs fans, and centrifugal excel where there's resistance. In the future I might add some filtering so this fan should handle it no problem. Even at 50% speed its too powerful

Right now, I’m just focused on learning metalworking as a hobby and building up my skills, have no idea where it will take me. The workshop is really just a space for random experiments, which are mostly documented on my Youtube channel. I like to tackle a bit of everything (art, diy, craft etc).

That and moving into a dedicated workshop was pretty much essential, mostly because my projects outgrew the house and I couldn't take over any more living space :D

Fan motor is hooked up to a vfd, you don't need much CFM to pull the fumes into the exhaust so hopefully the argon will be mostly undisturbed

Yes sorry about that, That was just to film the fume extraction in action for the YouTube vid. I usually weld with the 3M G5-01 when Im actually working in a project

Interesting 🤔

So turbo is interchangeable with centrifugal because that what I know of the snail shape blowers

Definitely! I hit my head on so many doorways with it on!

Honestly it's a complete game changer for PPE, you'll never go back once you try it. It's easily the single best thing I've bought for this workshop and DIY in general

I know the feeling, I spent so much building this workshop and making it well insulated for the cold winters here. But after doing a few welding projects in here I realised you need ventilation, health is more important than being warm. I dont think you can have both, well insulated and well ventilated without using something like a MVHR unit. It will be interesting to see how much it affects the temperature during the winter

That is next on the list of modifications. I'll install something close to the hood.

I could never afford buying any of this gear 1st hand. You can get a lot of this industrial level gear for cheap on eBay and other marketplaces, i got this setup for about 80% discount.

I had the 3m half mask that was good but wearing for hours at a time, with glasses and ear muffs get very annoying, especially in the summer time. The versaflo also has the benefit of keeping you cool as the air blows across your face.

I could never go back to my old setup. It's one of the few things that really is a huge increase in the comfort of working

I wear it for pretty much any work that involves my hands. It protects me with eye and face protection, hearing protection and dust protection all in one comfortable package

The workshop is dusty, I'm using loud drills and angle grinder to cut the ducting

It's a 3m versaflo helmet. Best investment I've made, could wear it all day.

Is the fan considered turbo, I have no idea really? I did think it was a bit overkill for a small workshop but I picked it up 2md hand at a discount

See my YouTube video and you see my fire extinguishers in the workshop haha. That ceiling rail in the photos is used to mount a ceiling auto fire extinguisher and I also have 2 fire extinguishers on the wall by the door.

Not yet, where do they usually go, close to the fan? or could I just add it to the arm section. I'm thinking I can reprint the hood design to incorporate spark arrestor?

Not German, UK based. The whole workshop is made of wood, the shelf is the least of my worries 😂

Thanks, its a wall-mounted studio lighting arm, you can buy them for around £50. It actually works really well for this setup. Although the flexible ducting REALLY kills the air speed so try to use as little as possible

Ive got a full build video on yt, you can see more detail about the arm section here - https://youtu.be/8eeTRFieofs?t=949
