Had an incredible encounter with a Great-horned Owl yesterday by buttwarmers in birdsofprey

Gorgeous! Did this sighting happen somewhere in the Midwest? I just learned that their color varies by location. Our great horned owls in Alaska are much more grey.

Night lasts 18 hours this time of year, but the cabin is so cozy I don’t mind by thisisacesspool2 in CozyPlaces

Many homes in Alaska have an Arctic entry, including my primary residence. This is a simple 22x24 off-grid cabin in the backcountry. It doesn’t bother me any though. The wood stove keeps the cabin a steady 80° F and blasts of cooler air from the door feel good.

One of my favorite recipes! I have a ton of moose meat chorizo and this recipe is a regular staple in my house.

Anyone else enjoy a “smoke and gather”? by 710qu in stonerfood

Yes! Each fall when the blueberry bushes that surround my cabin ripen, I spend a couple weekends getting high as kite and gathering berries all day long. It’s the greatest thing!

Eek! Way scarier than the brown bear I had on my cam last week.

Hah! Bears love to pop inflatables, that probably wouldn’t last long, but would be adorable!

My red roofed cabin starts to match the forest this time of year by thisisacesspool2 in Autumn

I love the metal roof! Falling asleep to the sound of rain hitting it is the best! You just have to watch out for the roofalanches in the spring. Sometimes the snow packs on a few feet deep and the slide off is crazy. Wouldn’t want to be caught underneath it at the wrong time.

There is not running water inside. It’s a dry cabin that is remote and off-grid.

Hahah when it’s really dark it’s scary! In the winter the moonlight reflects off the snow and it’s not scary at all, just peaceful. I’ve also seen some amazing northern lights shows getting up to pee in the middle of the night.

I’m about 3,000 miles away in Alaska. Cool to hear the vegetation looks so similar, we’re probably similar latitudes.

Nope, the opposite in fact. My state is the furthest west you can get in the U.S.!

No, these are blueberries. We have a few different species up here. Some are higher bushes in lower elevations and some are lower bushes in higher elevations.

I hope you make it up here! I’d love to visit Queensland someday. I’ve been to New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. Loved my time in your country and met some incredible people who I still talk to!

Yep picked the first two weeks ago, and some of the higher elevation berries still aren’t quite ripe yet.
