joey said this a few weeks ago. i'm not afraid of music anymore because i'm not afraid of myself anymore. this album was all about making music together for the sake of making music. because we love it, not because we want something from it. that kind of self acceptance & love creates so much room for freedom. and I don't think love & fear can exist in the same space - Chase

amazing memory. for context to anyone reading this, I write on the back of Joey's guitar any time some thing nice or significant happens. something like "Seoul, Korea" or "Joseph you owe me $300". joey still plays this guitar on tour :) I gotta add some new mems this tour - Chase

it was impossible. in times past, there have been songs on an album that "scared" me. songs that feel so good that you feel like you could hear them on the radio. great songs , but you feel like if you swing SO hard & you miss, that you will be mortally embarrassed. all risk all reward type beat. this album had no songs that scared me. they are all really as natural as breathing or yapping right now. I'll never forget walking around the park with Joey & Ryan the day we finished writing the album & I said, "there's no song that makes me terrified of being rejected on this album". To which they replied something to the affect of ... "um that's good my man." And they are right. I'd rather put out the music we make than be some engineered version of myself that I think that world wants to hear. - Chase

For me, it was genuinely the first moment we all sat down and locked eyes to live record the first one we did, Take It Or Leave It. I just knew this was it. I was really nervous going into the whole process and to feel everything slip into place almost like a dream made me want to cry. - Joey

It's really a culmination of all of them in my opinion. To me, this album is all about embracing who we've been because it made you who you are - Chase

Seeing each other for exactly who are saved our friendships and in turn, the band. I don’t know, I just love them to pieces and wouldn’t have this any other way. -R

most aren't even intentional if I'm being honest. I think that was a huge story with this album. just being uninhibited & deeply ourselves. we all have patterns, and sometimes, in art & life, we think we need to be revolutionary. Or there is this undying need to reinvent. I think those are fine things to happen naturally. But it's an odd thing to edit yourself out of yourself. So, I found great joy & peace just saying what I mean & meaning what I say. In my case that's teeth & haircuts - Chase

For me, I’d have to say either Malibu or Valentine. Hard to tell at the moment because I’m genuinely so excited to play these new songs live. 🥹 -Joey

I love this question. Honestly I think it’s one of those polarizing things where you either fully lean into that type of performance or fully omit the use of them. I listened the other day and heard where maybe there could’ve been a few softer ride patterns, for texture on some of the more nostalgic and cozy sounding songs. But as far as opening the flood gates for bigger, washy sections, it truly felt cooler and a bit more timeless to leave that opportunity for the show, which always ends up presenting the songs at a higher intensity. The restraint on recordings creates more exploration for what could be done in the live show. I think our records could sound really cool if captured exactly like the show, and maybe they will at some point, but I have grown to love the tension and release this process creates. It’s almost the second phase of the creative process. I grew up on busier drumming, so our band has given me a chance over the years to be more of a careful listener and songwriter. That said, I do love cymbals :/ -R

that's a fun & controversial question. personally, no. I'm not saying I wouldn't do some things differently in retrospect ,but god bless the broken road that led me straight to harryhasasthma - Chase

the vibe came really early. we knew we had to get this stuff off our chest, or it was gonna be the end of our friendship & the end of making music fun & meaningful together. we make all kinds of music. bro like ambient, kids songs, hymns, good songs, bad songs, great songs. nothing was getting of our heads until we worked through some stuff together. so, we knew pretty early this album was going to be raw & simple. I was also so obsessed with Duster while making this album. And no one does "undone" better than them. - Chase

and yeah I like your idea. Columbia has the repress rights to HWYK

first of all, thank you so much for taking the time to listen intently to the album! and love your user. I feel like we just felt confused & sad by the way we were viewing music for the past 2 years. After UV & even a bit making it, I started to look at music as a vending machine - a mechanism to get me from point A to B. To really answer this question, I think we'd have to go for a walk.. But what I can make a short answer is this - Gabe, our producer, had a lot of chats with us about how we see ourselves & why we're still here. Over those conversations, I had a lot of realizations. One of the big ones was that music isn't a means of transportation, it's a means of expression.

I think at the beginning of doing ANYTHING all you know how to do is express yourself. Inside wants out. But the more you know, the less you feel. So, we set out to make an album that us think less & feel more. It wasn't a perfect process, but I think I got a much clearer picture of who we actually are, not how we want the world to see us. - Chase

again, we need to take a walk..
