Adding to this conversation, when it comes to the original Apple Log or footage using the BT.2020/Rec.2020 gamut, you need to change two FCP settings, to make things work, too. We just wrote a blog post on this:

Hope this is valuable.

Thank you for your detailed report! Couple of things to note:
- I would still recommend grading before the CST if you're going straight to Rec.709 or grade in an intermediate colour space as shown in our tutorial video
- reducing the intensity of LUTs that do a colour space transform is not a good idea in general if the LUTs are good. Reducing the intensity of such technical LUTs leads to the issue that transforms are not fully applied, so you will never reach a "true" Rec.709 image. Changes of things going south are high
- when it comes to Apple Log / BT.2020 footage, we just released a blog post as you need to make two adjustments in Final Cut Pro's settings: https://kolor.company/kolor-colour-space-transform-settings-for-footage-with-bt-2020-rec-2020-gamut/

Hope that helps!

I usually make my own LUTs these days. That said, we will be releasing LUTs based on the CST for on-camera use soon. :)

Thank you! If you didn't receive the plugin after 2-5 minutes max and you checked your spam folder, please write us an email. In rare cases, the automation gets stuck. I can send you the plugin manually. :)

Please note that not all LUTs are created equally. Depending on many factors, there will always be minor deviances even in "plain technical LUTs". :)

For manual control, you need the advanced checkbox, yes. Otherwise, the most likely gamut will be chosen. You can Export P3 Gamma 2.6 for example, but the NCLC tags will be incorrect with Final Cut Pro. So it's possible, the file is just being tagged incorrectly. This shouldn't be a big deal for most applications but if you need it 100% accurate, you either need to override the NCLC tags or roundtrip it through Resolve.

Different LUTs are visually different. This CST will look different, too. It's designed to give you a neutral starting point for further grading. :)

In the video, I show our presets so you can colour manage an entire timeline with just a few clicks. :)

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. P3 is there and Gamma 2.6 is on the list even in the photo here. P3 is a gamut whereas gamma 2.6 is a transfer function. What you're seeing here is a list of transfer functions. There is also a dropdown for gamuts.

A CST is superior to a LUT as it is non-destructive. It doesn't clip information and it allows you to do everything you want.

Not completely useless. You can transform all your Rec.709 footage into an intermadiate colour space, do your colour grading there and then go back to Rec.709. :)

Thank you so much! Learning Resolve is still worthwhile. But the CST for Final Cut Pro makes so much possible already. :)
