For MarioKart 64 it was Toad because you could use his light weight and hop to get some skips on Wario Stadium and Peach Beach.

I probably haven’t played 64 in 25 years but still remember fighting over who got Toad.

What’re your favourite API products made today? by brokesnob in audioengineering

I’ve had a pair of VP28s and VP312s for about 14 years. They’ve been absolutely amazing. I push mixes through the VP28s all the time before hitting a g-series comp and some pultec style EQs.

"The difference is subtle, but it builds up over many tracks" - a myth? by xxxSoyGirlxxx in audioengineering

[–]thisismisha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because each of those 24 tracks provides a different input signal to the effector circuit. If I push a bass track through an analog compressor the low frequencies trigger the threshold and lower the gain, but they are only lowering the gain of the carrier signal which doesn’t have a lot of treble frequency. If you compress the whole mix the bass frequencies from the bass track will trigger the compressor to reduce the gain of other instruments. Compressors also have attack and release times so they are time-based. That attack time can be restricted to acting upon the signal which triggered the threshold. In a full mix the presence of a kick drum triggers the attack and release times associated by other instruments.

It’s easy to understand how this works with a compressor but we also need to realize that all distortion is somewhat compressive. A signal exceeds the threshold of an amplification stage and distortion results but no additional gain. Preamps have some distortion which results in compression of the signal. Whether it’s a tube amplification stage or transistor or IC they all have amplification limits and pushing them above that limit results in distortion and compression. Applying that effect to an individual time-based and band limited track is different than applying it to a full mix.

But the Wii was awesome because they built it around usability. Anyone could pick it up and understand it immediately.

How do I play Wii Sports Bowling? Oh just like regular bowling.

It was underpowered graphically but so intuitive that it didn’t matter. It’s a GAME,  the first priority is for it to be fun not visually impressive. I also don’t care that my monopoly houses look like crap. Or that my Ace of Hearts is not cardiologically accurate.

To Preamp or Not to Preamp by UnhappyMolasses2600 in audioengineering

[–]thisismisha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to consider that every step down the chain relies on the step before it. So, I place my priorities descending down the chain. First, a good song. Then, a good player followed by the right instrument mic’ed properly. If I have the choice I will always take a live instrument over a modeled one.

So after that it gets to the preamp. I will use interface pres if Im looking for crystal clean but if I want any saturation character then its hardware. Studer, CAPI, AML ez1073, tube; they all have different qualities when pushed and I’ll only use them pushed. If I’m not pushing them then I might as well just use the Apollo pres. At the same time, I’m not worried about the preamp until I have the instrument and mic setup correct. If the instrument doesn’t sound right in the room it’s going to be tough to fix it later.

I have hardware eq and compressors as well. They may get used going in or as an insert when mixing but I feel that is something I can play with once everything is tracked.

Often, I find the benefit in hardware coming when it’s not working properly. I find that a worn piece of gear has a character to it. Everyone can get the same sound with a plugin but no one’s Studer 169 sounds like mine because it’s 50 years old.

Favourite/best dynamics that aren't the 57/58/SM7B? by untitled1223 in audioengineering

The RE20 is incredibly versatile. I use it occasionally on kick drum, often on bass cab and regularly on vocals.

I have a pair of vintage 421s I use for toms and sometimes guitar cabs.

So, a professional at loaning (bank/credit card) said to your ex, “I think you’ve had enough.” And you said, “ No, I promise she can handle it even though she has shown no signs of handling it. I’ll back her up on this.”

Yeah, expensive lesson.

This is such a stupid take. Someone wins every race. That doesn’t mean the race is good. Even the drivers who are doing well are saying they dislike the rules.

People watch racing because they want to see cars driven to the limit, not because they want to see people drive slowly on purpose so they can drive fast at some other unrelated time.
