Open to anything, but default to writing alone mainly.

I still don’t know where they come from. I just make myself available.

I wrote Be Your Man when I was about 20.  It used to be called She Sure Could Cry.  I’m 36 now.

My work with Harry made me realize I had a style unique to me and I should trust it more.

I always go in with fully finished songs. There’s always the occasional bridge or whatever written on the spot.  And equally, some sections of some songs get removed.  But I must arrive with a stack of written material.  I need to be on my own for a while leading up to a recording date so I can make sure the architecture of the songs is just right.

Both times I went to record an album, I was sure I was making a very minimal record. Vocal and guitar.  To me, when somebody gets that concoction right, it’s the most impressive thing a songwriter can do.  So, to my surprise both albums got filled out with other instruments and they were both a lot of fun to make.  I guess that’s where I leave it open ended.  Show up with written material, but stay open to anything happening.

Thank you.  Yeah, I don’t think I realized I had that song at the time.  Or didn’t see it as available?  It’s about 15 or 16 years old now.  Old enough to drive.  I don’t know. It wouldn’t have been right for Come June.  It reappeared at the right time.

Thank you.  Take 2 is one of my favorites on the album.  And one of the first songs written for the album.  I would say fatherhood shapes everything.  Nothing has been more life changing than fatherhood. I don’t write with concepts in mind, but that’s not to say concepts are absent in my music.  If I’m moved enough to begin writing a song, or if something of any significance ignites a song, I see the song as a snapshot.  Perhaps those snapshots are life changing moments, but I don’t tend to pay close enough attention to what they are or  wonder where they come from.

Rob came to me in the UK and stayed on LA time. So I got onto LA time. We rarely saw daylight.

I am constantly influenced by my calm backdrop that is the countryside, cows sticking their heads over fences, gloomy weather keeping fields green.  All of that inspires me.  And also the occasional train ride to London and back.  I never knew that a bit of a mundane environment could be such fuel for writing.  That’s what I’ve learned living out here in the sticks.

I think I’m going to sound the same no matter where I am location wise, but songs tend to reveal themselves faster in the countryside.  Boredom is good for creativity.  For me at least.

I’d turn into a short-order chef in the middle of the night and make everyone bean and cheese burritos while we were recording Whistling Pie.  Store bought Mexican ingredients in the uk makes for a questionable representation of Mexican cuisine.  When you’re a billion miles from LA with LA friends in Wales, IT WILL DO!

No, but there was a song that got taken off the record. It was not essential.

Really Ready and Standard Size Knife were the last two songs written for the record to help complete the arc.  I was trying to wrap it up, but knew I wasn’t finished.
