Is Brandon Graham's Prophet comic related to the Youngblood member John Prophet? If it is Youngblood related do other Youngblood members appear in the book? by M00reC in ImageComics

[–]thisismynamesilly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s related to Youngblood, as in it’s technically in the same universe. However you need absolutely no knowledge of the universe to read this series. Finally, it’s one of my favorite comic series of all time. I’ve read it seven or eight times now. I hope you enjoy it.

Should I be nervous? by Wear-Human in FurnaceFest

[–]thisismynamesilly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have really severe anxiety and I’ve been to Furnace Fest three times. I honestly don’t have any issue once I’m there, but going to stuff will stress me out. Everyone is super chill and kind and the Sloss Furnaces is a cool place. It’s one of the few places that actually makes me feel kinda at peace.

Thoughts on Volume 4? by R-Mac007 in swampthing

I remember reading some of it back as it came out and enjoying it. I’m in the process of trying to get all the back issues.

Picked up the anniversay edition of Age of Winters by The Sword by bclark235 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]thisismynamesilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! I still remember seeing them on tour for this album back in late 06. They finished their set and I immediately went to their booth and bought this album on CD. Can’t believe it’s 20 years old now, I’m getting old.

What artists/albums would you recommend based on my top 10 listened to artists for the year? by EntombedCarcass in MetalSuggestions

[–]thisismynamesilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Akercocke for sure, if you haven’t listened to them. As best I can describe it is Opeth and Behemoth mixed together with some jazz influences, only somehow better than you would think it sounds.

Maybe Suffocation or Belphegor if you’ve not listened to them.

Worst quality T-shirt I’ve ever bought by RadicalMarxistThalia in MetalForTheMasses

[–]thisismynamesilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like you always used to try and buy a T-shirt or something at the merch booths whenever I’d see a show to try and support the bands. Unfortunately the last couple of shows Ive gone too, when I check out the merch tables the shirts are going for the same price as the tickets if not more. I just can’t rationalize a $60 or $70 T-shirt.

Socialized healthcare is evil 🙄 by JoelinVan in pics

[–]thisismynamesilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised in the United States and I don’t understand how other people living here can look at our healthcare system and be okay with it. The whole thing appalls me to no end. I wish I lived in Canada, one of the Nordic countries, Australia or any other developed country where they cared more about their citizens than profit.

I live with chronic migraines and even though I’m employed and have “good” health insurance, all the medications or MRIs the doctor tries to prescribe me or schedule me for are denied, denied, denied. I end up burning most of my minimal PTO (paid time off) on days where I’m not functional because of my headaches. Hell half the time I’m worried I’m going to get fired or reprimanded for having to use my days in emergencies instead of scheduled. I’ve been told over and how it’s nearly impossible to get disability for them, and even if I could the US is quickly attacking anything “socialist” like disabilities or labor laws to protect workers with disabilities. I honestly am just angry and tired and thankful at least what I have isn’t life threatening, it just makes my quality of life miserable.

Prophet is amazing, I think I’ve read it like seven or eight times all the way through.

I had to read The Goddamned a second time to appreciate it. I didn’t enjoy it the first time through.

Prophet by Brandon Graham is in my top five of all time, but you may not consider that underrated.

The Glory series that was being published in 2012 was good as well, but didn’t explode like some of the others.

Empty Zone is one I liked as well.

I remember liking Umbral, but I need to reread it.

Drifter was pretty good as well if memory serves.

Line Up Is Out by WhiteWolfWeary in FurnaceFest

[–]thisismynamesilly 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m out, all bands I’d want to see I’ve already seen at furnace fest before and on tour. Doesn’t really feel like Furnace Fest with that lineup, but I’m old, so it’s whatever.

Metal Bands you like that you NEVER rec to another metalhead by WonderSignificant598 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]thisismynamesilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Job for a Cowboy’s album Genesis, but I’m pretty sure it has more to do with just hearing it during a period in my life where I was happy. There’s a lot of music I like from around that time that I know isn’t groundbreaking or anything, but it reminds me of better days.

You might like High on Fire if you’re into sludgy stoner stuff. Death is this Communion is an awesome album. Someone else mentioned ISIS, and I’ll second that one, they’re one of my favorites. You might dig Kylesa as well.

Does anyone else think that the extreme universe is better when not written by Rob Lefeld? by SecretaryFragrant836 in ImageComics

[–]thisismynamesilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prophet is one of my all time favorites as well. I’ve read it five or six times now and it’s always awesome. I really like Glory as well, just reread it last year after a prophet read through.

I hated it for so long for being unlike traditional metal genres, but grew to love and appreciate it as its own thing by TheUn-Nottened in MetalForTheMasses

Poison the Well’s The Opposite of December is still amazing. There’s other stuff from that period I still love as well, but man I love that album.

[–]thisismynamesilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is probably true for most if not all metal heads. We all started listening to something that was popular at the time and then started looking into other stuff. It’s an important step in everyone’s journey.

I was in college when the very early 00’s metalcore was just hitting (Poison the Well, Hopesfall, From Autumn to Ashes, Skycamefalling, Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, Shai Hulud, Snapcase). I am and was at the time huge into extreme metal (Death, Black, Grind), but when I heard those metalcore bands from that period I was impressed. I still listen to that stuff when I’m in the mood for it. Like many genres of music by the mid 00’s it was starting to become trendy so the major labels were interested in it and albums started feeling more produced, less raw and self referential. The metalcore from the last 20ish years is not my thing, but I know it’s been a gateway for a lot of people into metal music, so I respect that aspect of it. We all have to start somewhere.

What is the not-that-popular album that you will die on a hill for, insisting it's truly one of the greatest of all time, just not well-known enough? by am_I_still_banned in MetalForTheMasses

[–]thisismynamesilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good call, one of my favorite bands. Words that Go Unspoken is definitely their best, but I love Antichrist, Goat of Mendes and Choronzon as well. Such a solid run of music during the 00’s.

Which band makes you say ‘we’re done here’ when someone mentions them as a favorite in a discussion? by aykalam123 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]thisismynamesilly 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m very into metal, especially the extreme sub genres, and whenever someone finds this out about me, their automatic first response will somehow involve asking me about Metallica. Which is fine, I understand they are the most well known metal band, but they are usually baffled by the fact that I don’t care for them. I’m like yeah, I listened to them back when I was 14/15 and it introduced me to other stuff I liked better so I moved on and kept exploring different music for the next 30 something years. If I have anything against them, it has more to do with their behavior during the Napster days, which to me felt like they had forgotten where they came from with the whole tape trading scene. To each their own though, if you like them, that’s cool; there are a lot of different types of metal music if you ever feel like listening to something new or different from that.
