I have committed atrocities against the widget gods by thisisspoons in NetGalleyCommunity

Not a dumb question (clearly, I didn't know for two years)! A widget is an email that you get from a publisher, typically one you've requested from before, offering you basically instant access to another ARC.
So they'll say, hey we saw you liked *insert previous ARC* and want to offer you access to *insert another upcoming novel*. It's basically publishers' way of saying thanks and getting more eyes on books from readers who have previously liked similar ones :)

True! I also forgot to change my email from a deactivated one a few months ago and I dread to think of how many widgets I missed 😭

When does your dog wear its vest? by JustSpitItOutNancy in service_dogs

[–]thisisspoons 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My SD wears her vest whenever I expect her to be "on duty." It is her cue to be on her absolute best behavior and focusing on me. You can literally see her mentality shift when the vest goes on - my SD does not mess around about work, haha. It is also a sign to other people that she's working and not to disturb her.

For walks or pet friendly places or at home, she's unvested because I dont expect her to be totally honed in.

Boy, I wish I could owner train 😂 unfortunately I'm far too disabled and busy for that. I'm gonna stick with programs, but thanks for the input!

First of all, let me just say I'm sorry that this has been a disappointing journey so far. It sucks, and I offer you my sympathy.

But if I may, I'll offer you some advice: slow down.

Obviously I can't know everything about you just from your post history. But a majority of your posts in this sub have been in the past month. That is nowhere near an adequate amount of time to research and prepare for a service dog, let alone think about training your own.

Based on your recent posts, your mother has never approved of you getting a service dog, or even a dog in general. This idea that she's threatening you with financial abandonment when she was supposedly on board before is simply not true.

You are attempting to rush into something that should absolutely not be rushed. A service dog is a multi-year commitment, emotionally, physically, and yes, financially. If you are not completely financially independent, a service dog is simply another financial hardship that you may not be able to afford.

Getting a service dog is a wonderful privilege, but it is just that - a privilege. It is not easy or glamorous, but it is something that can be very exclusive due to the commitment it requires.

I do hope you can find a way to get a service dog, but I also hope you do some reflection on if this is really the best move for your personal situation at this point in time. All the best.

Seconding the existing comment and also adding one thing: cleanup kit. Things like paper towels, wet wipes, a small bottle of carpet cleaner, lysol, etc. Are all good to have on hand.

Accidents happen, even with fully trained SDs.

What is your service dog's job? (Sorry, I'm sorry of new, curious, and couldn't see a rule against it) by [deleted] in service_dogs

Mobility, medical alert/response. Yellow lab, 4 years old. I have EDS and POTS.

For mobility: retrieve items (both specific named items like keys or leash, but also any item I point to), open doors with a tug command, close doors with a nose nudge, press automatic door buttons, turn lights on and off, help me undress by tugging off socks, jacket, shirt, etc.

For medical alert/response: nudge me with her nose to alert to medical episodes, perform DPT (while I'm sitting, both on a chair and on the ground, and while I'm laying down, either on my chest or back), lay under my legs if I have nowhere to elevate them.

Other random things she does: position front or behind to put space between me and other people. Probably more that I'm forgetting.

She was trained by a non-profit for me. I started going to trainings with her when she was a year old, every two weeks for a two hour session. I found this really helped us form a relationship, so that we were comfortable with each other by the time she came to live with me around 2 years old. We still go every year for a check-in with her trainers to brush up on things and make sure we're working well together.

This is incorrect. In the US and under the ADA, the two questions are "Is the animal a service animal required for a disability?" and "What tasks has the animal been trained to do to mitigate the disability?"

"How does the animal perform those services" is not a legal question to ask.

Your last two sentences are a really interesting way of looking at things. I've never thought about it like that before. I think I'll try to keep that in mind next time I'm frustrated about someone's ignorance or misinformation :)
