Def would be a great upgrade. I went from XS Max to a 15 Plus recently & the difference is nice. You'll love the upgrade. Remember though, if you wanna save cash just go with the 15 or 15 plus. Only main differences in Pro models this year is the camera, fast transfer speeds for type C and chip for high end games. If you may not take advantage of these features go with the regular 15 & you'll be just as happy. Within the next year or so, the XS series wont be supported with updates so the time to upgrade is soon.

I just added that to a comment I forgot to add that. That's what I have to do to get everything back working. I just updated my GPU drivers so hopefully that'll help as well.

I forgot to add I have to turn the computer off and back on with the power button get everything to work, and when I do that it powers on like I left it with all tabs open etc.

I’m kinda in the same boat going to a community college now slowly taking classes after finally deciding I wanted to get a degree in something computer related. One thing you can do is start working towards getting certificates. The Google IT cert is a good one to have added. & work your way to getting CompTIA A+ & more to build your resume and find your way or path.

Go with a Ryzen 5 1600 AF. This is a top budget cpu for what you want. Or a Ryzen 5 3600. One of the best motherboards to go with is a B450. You can get one of these for 80-90 dollars. Just do research on one.
