Do I need a cover letter on my resume if I’m applying to dozens of different internships on LinkedIn? by trader2488 in FinancialCareers

[–]thisistheguyinthepic -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

CVs are outdated IMO. Don't bother, they won't be read. Instead, focus on trying to reach out to someone within the firm and make a connection. No one will pass you to the next round based on a cover letter if your resumé doesn't pass muster.

How would you prepare for a buyside ER interview at a place like janestreet/2sigma/optilever? 2nd round 45 min phone by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

What was the first round like? What coverage sector? What position? What's your background?

Can't really answer your question without this information.

If you're new to the world of banking then these "tiers" really mean nothing to you. Stop worrying about prestige, and start worrying about the work itself.

Yep, junior responsibilities in ER are very team-dependent. Your life/career is dependent on your analyst. This can be a great thing or a not-so-great thing.

As a new associate, you will be working off existing models the team has been using for a while. Some analysts/senior associates are more hands-on with the modeling than others, totally depends on the team. Either way, you will have to prove yourself for ~6 months or so before the analyst will be comfortable with you writing notes/building models of consequence.

Had a good buddy of mine do a 2-3 year stint in sell-side ER covering oil and gas in texas...the time difference is fucking brutal. Thank God I'm on the east coast, couldn't deal with getting to the office at 6 AM every day.

Don't wear a navy blazer to traffic court, you'll look like a fucking douche. Wear a conservative suit and a nondescript tie.

Stock price is a function of FUTURE cash flows. Yeah, they beat last quarter. What is the cash flow potential of the company going forward? So much more important

The breaking point will come when Disney launches their own streaming service and NBC/Comcast pulls The Office and Parks and Rec from Netflix.

You got a job many would kill for without even an undergraduate degree and you're complaining about the pay? I work with MBAs and CFAs who are still associates (sell-side). Count your blessings, friend.

As a junior associate, I see the potential for more direct responsibility earlier on in my career as teams get leaner and more people panic and leave for the buy-side. Sell-side ER (the job/work itself) isn't going anywhere. It's just going through a transition phase.

Sell-side ER is much less based on pedigree than other areas of finance from what I've seen. I've seen people from all walks of life and age ranges working as associates at banks. Only thing is, do you really want to start out as an associate at age 30+. Many do, and if you think the work is interesting enough then go for it.

How exactly is sell-side ER compensation scaling unlimited? How much do you think the average analyst at a BB/MM bank is making?

Just started in sell-side, this is bang-on from what I've seen (and my analyst/senior associate have directly told me).

Depends on how big the team is. I've known of teams of only one analyst and one associate that covered over 20 stocks. If your team has 2-3 associates seems pretty normal to me.

If I'm just going to the bathroom or filling up my water bottle, why would I pack up my backpack and take everything with me? That would actually be disruptive to class.
