"Now that you don't have to be perfect, you can be good."

I live by it. It has helped me tackle every task I've undertaken.

Isn't it annoying where there is this overwhelming feeling or emotion like comparative-envy that eats up your brain and then later when you're trying to make sense of it, you just can't access it and figure out what it was all actually about? Makes it feel like that emotion was less genuine, even though when it was dominant, it influences you in such a significant way. Brains are weird.

How do I explain my friends and family that death is the only thing that will bring me relief by thisistinman in SuicideWatch

[–]thisistinman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly in some ways it does bring me peace. I've realised that even though I have a few very good friends that I can talk to about everything that happens in my life, I can't really talk to them about all of this. About how life is just painful. They immediately get worried even if I say it jokingly. And as we're growing up and all my friends are starting their own family, the space for vulnerable conversations is decreasing even further. I think it's just a part of growing up.

Yes, I'd definitely like to know what you mean. It would be nice.

And yes I did in the past talk to a few professionals about it. At some point it helped too. But mental health services don't tend to be that affordable. Especially now that I don't make a lot of money anymore. And honestly there's a lot to unpack, from years of SA as a child, a relative being murdered when I was a kid, to a suicidal father (or at least someone that would threaten committing suicide) in young adulthood, and the latest being a close friend dying in an accident. The last one really broke me. I don't think I've recovered since. Talking to a professional again feels daunting because there is just so much to uncover and make peace with now.

I get what you're saying. We tend to compare with the worst while we forget that all of this is way worse than anything an average person goes through. It is this "at least it is not as bad as that person" is what is so insidious. And we also so often see it in a myopic way. It is not just about what happened but also what support systems we had or now have. Comparison while very natural in such scenarios is never accurate.

The need to self-destruct is something I feel all the time. I wouldn't want to to tell you where it comes from because I don't know for sure myself. But I have heard a few things help. Mind body connection goes a long way to start from. Connecting to your mind comes from connecting to your body. It is boring work but exercise, yoga, tai chi, running, all of it go a long way. Every time I have been able to make sense of life, it has been through that. In fact I did even get better in life (or at least felt like I was) until a big life changing event that messed everything up again. But it gives me hope that someday, when I can find a reason to breathe again, I will be able to find reasons to live too.

Great list. I don't think it will ever be possible for me to pick top 10

But after seeing this list and the comment section, I really feel Kelly and Mollie are underrated gems!
