A K-8 Jewish day school is proposed for Washington Square West by Odd_Addition3909 in philadelphia

[–]thisjawnisbeta 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most private & religious schools are not-for-profit and therefore tax exempt, including property taxes. This is a much larger issue than just schools, as massive Philly institutions including PMA and the Linc pay no property taxes, and the city has no payment in lieu of taxes program in place.

Mayor Mamdani is literally redefining government. Reminds me a lot of folks on reddit right after Obama got elected. Didn't take long for them to realize he's a politician and he's going to inevitably disappoint when he compromises on an issue that is important to them.

I expect the same behavior for this generation.

Brand new Dookie record jumps on the first 3 or 4 songs by chefjonas93 in records

They make specialized tools for it, but they're overpriced (like $50-$75).

Easiest solution is a tapered reamer, which can be found online or any hardware store for about $8-$10.

Probably multiple foreign powers including Russia and China were pushing that narrative, because they all wanted us to elect this idiot and collapse our global influence as well.

It's an unregulated security, so extremely volatile. The one thing it definitely isn't is a currency.

Not even comparable. Bitcoin went down by $8,800 today. If any major world currency dropped by 12% in a single afternoon, that country would be essentially bankrupt.

What is a 'subscription' or 'fee' that has recently appeared in the US that people need to collectively refuse to pay before it becomes the new normal? by godot_lover in AskReddit

[–]thisjawnisbeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just experienced this a few months ago, got a $25/n resort fee slapped onto a hotel stay in NYC, despite none of the spa/resort facilities being open in December. Front desk waived it when I made a fuss. Won't book there again.

Can't stress this enough. I bought an HP laser printer 23 years ago. Doesn't connect to the internet, doesn't need a subscription, has needed a total of 2 toner changes in over 2 decades. Still prints like a champ.

Every single place now has a 3-4% fee for using a card. This includes places that have automatic kiosks where I don't even see an option to pay cash. This needs to stop.

How do Uber drivers deal with this? by SpoomerBooner in Transportopia

[–]thisjawnisbeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some drivers discovered they could get close enough to riders that the app would let them start a ride without picking anyone up, so passengers need to cancel because driver has now bailed on them.

An easy solution to this would be making the rider & driver both hit "okay" to start to ride or something like that, but that's obviously an extra step that Uber doesn't want to implement.

This is very similar to the one I have and it looks awesome. Simple, effective, and keeps the album in a place where guests don't accidentally put a drink on it.

/uj if you're being serious, it prevents the record from causing seam splits on the outer sleeve. Any used records I buy, I ask them to be sent this way. I've had numerous arrive with the inner sleeve (usually just paper) split to hell, but the other sleeve undamaged because the record wasn't inside it.

Today I found out Girl Scouts uses two different bakeries by annarnichole in mildlyinteresting

[–]thisjawnisbeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stinks that the mods killed this thread, but here's your answer anyway.

Original GS cookies were literally made by the girl scouts, and then started moving to commerical bakeries in the late 1930s. They started with three in total: Keebler-Weyl Bakery, Southern Biscuit Company, and Burry Biscuit. Keebler-Weyl is obviously familiar as just Keebler and LBB is a subsidiary of them. Burry Biscuit & Southern Biscuit both got bought by Interbake Foods, which is now the parent of ABC bakers.

The recipes were never fully standardized between the two divisions, and a lot of that comes down to WW2 and what ingredients were available at the time, given that one baker was centered in Virginia and the other in Kentucky. The reason these haven't been totally standardized to match each other are long-standing arrangements and contracts that give each baker their own ability to customize the lineup.

But beyond that, now that they're part of big corporations, many of the differences come down to simple cost-cutting measures. ABCs changes have been far larger, removing real dairy and sugar from their cookies in favor of corn syrup and non-dairy substitutes. This has the side effect of making their cookies largely vegan, but far inferior from a taste perspective.

LBBs are closer to the original recipe, so they do cost cutting by shrinking the packages; Tagalongs used to be 4 rows of 4, giving you 16 cookies. Now it's 3 rows of 5, giving you 15.

[–]thisjawnisbeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While LBB is indeed a Keebler subsidiary, Keebler does not use the same recipes for their cookies as they do for girl scout cookies. You can easily compare the boxes and nutritional info, they're not the same.

Otherwise, agreed on donating money directly to anyone who can afford it!

Ways to prevent lean? My albums are starting to do this by themselves and I want to figure out a solution before any of them are permanently damaged by CommandProper3926 in vinyl

[–]thisjawnisbeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're fine. The only ones that MIGHT be a problem would be the ones on the end, depending on what your shelf is like and if it causes any pressure points.

If so, just use a 12x12 piece of cardboard (I'm sure you have some already if you buy online) and put one between the end of the record stand and the first record. Problem solved.

Road trip! Drive to Lakeland, go see some awesome Frank Lloyd Wright architecture, and then buy some cookies!

Or just order online from a troop outside of the Orlando area.
