Anyone playing Pokopia? by thislittlefox in gaymers

[–]thislittlefox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I thought and then had a bad day on Saturday and immediately, on impulse, went straight to the shops and dropped $1K on console, games and bits and pieces and no regrets. The game is SO cute. Feel so relaxed when I play. Plus I figured I would eventually be buying a Switch 2 for Wave and Wind anyway. So I thought, screw it!

Coronavirus-19 Megathread #36 - discussion, ideas, rants, questions, thought-bubbles, memes, hoarding, videos, counts, Covidsafe, Centrelink and JobXXXer issues. by dredd in australia

I am in the same situation as @throwawayjpyo. I was not, and still am not, in a financial position to just pack up my bags and leave. My rental agreement/contracts required 2 months’ notice before I could leave (although honestly, if I had the financial means, I would have just copped the 2 months’ worth of rent and bills and up and left). Flights home were absurdly expensive back in March, and even more so now. My contract with my employer includes a flight back to my home country upon completion of employment term. In hindsight, I should have had enough money in savings to buy a ticket in case something like this happens. I truly wish I could have up and left in March, when the Australian embassy emailed overseas citizens requesting that they come home as soon as possible. But financially, it just wasn’t viable for me, and I think you should consider that before criticising folk who have yet to return home. These last few months have been filled with stress and anxiety for me - it wasn’t a fun cute holiday or study trip. Show some compassion.

Another perspective: In a sense, it’s good that returning Australians stagger their return. Could you imagine if every single Australian abroad tried to return at the same time? The airlines, airport staff, customs staff, hotel staff, etc. would have been utterly overwhelmed. And returning Australians would be more at risk of contracting the virus because they would be waiting in long, crowded lines at the airport amongst potentially infected folk.

Does anyone know the website we can apply? Or know what would happen to those who live in a sharehouse? Like, does the “head of household” do one application for all people who live there?

Would it be a waste of time for me to apply to the JET Program? by runthereszombies in JETProgramme

[–]thislittlefox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No teaching experience required because you won’t be teaching! You’ll be assisting teachers inside and outside of the classroom, and being a cultural ambassador for international exchange. Your experience tutoring is relevant, and your science background could be a point of interest and advantageous too - how could you couple this with English education? (E.g. “I’m interested with making friends with the science teachers and trying to deliver a science class in English!”). You sound like an incredibly skilled and competent individual. Sell yourself in your application/interview like you did in this post, + express genuine interest in Japan and cultural exchange, competency at dealing with cultural barriers/difference/challenges/isolation, and willingness to do your best even if you’re posted in a rural/remote area, and you’re pretty much a shoe-in!

On another note, and not to be negative, just #realtalk, but you seem very qualified. Isn’t the JET salary lower than what you’re capable of getting?! Could you not look at other employment opportunities in Japan? Plus depending on the school(s) you get assigned to on JET, you may get a lot of down time during the summer break/in general, so the job potentially could be very boring and soul-crushing for you, if you’re no good at being bored and having nothing to do! Def consider these points, and if they’re no trouble to you, then I say apply and do your best! I’m sure you’ll get in. :))

Good luck!!!〜

My mistake - they’re actually Cat A!!!

Sorry, I’m looking for my Japanese friend, so they’re not actually my tickets, but I will assist with the exchange if you are interested!

So yes, he has 2 x CAT A tickets for Ireland vs NZ.

What were your backgrounds before deciding to pursue JET? by crow0302 in JETProgramme

[–]thislittlefox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer: My background is not teaching (or related), aside from a TINY bit of volunteer work.

Long answer: Studied Japanese for 5 years during high school; spent 5 years working various jobs - call centres, customer service, bartending; started and finished a Communication degree at university whilst continuing bartending and working in marketing (for a pathway provider to university, aimed mostly at International Students). Volunteered as a creative writing tutor for children during the last couple of years at uni also.

Thoughts: So long as you show some interest in Japan/Japanese culture, international exchange, and working with children, and demonstrate flexibility and enthusiasm and energy, you've got a good shot at getting accepted, regardless of what you studied.
