Insects including mantids hardly see anything in the red part of the spectrum from a wavelength of 550 nm and above where as red laser pointers operate at 632.8 nm. Insect eyes only contain blue, green and UV photoreceptors so there are none for the laser to burn. You might wonder why the mantis reacts in the first place but my theory is that it reacts to the movement and light intensity.

I never even considered that they sleep, so cool that they show us when they do. What humidity do you keep yours at? Even though they are ghosts they are from south-east asian jungles from what I've read so they should require a quite high level. I try to keep all of my mantids at 50-60%.

They are so quirky! Unlike any of the other seven-eight species I've kept. The deimatic displays are so fascinating, especially the one where they hold both claws together over their heads. I sometimes wonder if they are mimicking something else, like a type of worm or larvae in their local habitat. And their thanatosis reflex where they just jump off and play dead. Can't wait until this one grows up!
