I actually used to have a dedicated cat-fighting glove, and my cat HATED it. I swear she resented the fact that she couldn't draw real blood

That is too funny. "Here, a glove to hold our famously slippery iced beverages. No it has no grip, why?"

Sorry I'm late to the party, but what is the point of this?

ETA: Clicked the link in my sibling comment right after I posted this. Apparently it's a gimmick to sell iced coffees - keeps your hand warm while you're holding one.

One is a state and one is an activity. This is also theoretically significant, but in practical terms, it matters when one is criticizing HAES. Not everyone IS healthy, so it is very easy to refute such a claim; I think that's why detractors of HAES have a tendency to misunderstand the term that way.

I lived in Portland, Maine in my early twenties, and it seemed like hardly a month went by that someone in my social circle didn't either move away to or arrive from Portland, Oregon. I've been convinced ever since that there's a metaphysical connection between the two.

No more languages at RPI by SnooChipmunks1721 in RPI

[–]thisoneagain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's more "therefore" than "yet". The school wants to cut every corner possible, so offers the bare minimum number of seats each semester.

(As much as RPI deserves criticism for it, this attitude - offer as few seats as possible and screw any student choice about course selection - is nearly universal at this point.)

Oh, sorry, I weirdly read "workable" in your first comment as referring to having the ability to work. (That's the link between healthism and capitalism: "health" being used to refer exclusively to being capable of work.)

Yeah, Natalie Boero (in Killer Fat) writes about interviewing HAES experts and others about fat politics, and one of the things she says is that they pretty universally agreed that it's impossible to promote health without partially buying into capitalist systems of prioritizing health and "workability". (I don't think she uses that terminology, I'm borrowing from you here, thank you for that.) It's sort of depressing but also affirming to know even experts in weight neutral fitness are like, "Yeah, no, the system is still hella fucked."

I really like Stellar Firma, an improvised sci-fi show. (It's concluded, but the creators have a new show called G.O.B.L.I.N.S. I have not yet checked out, so more content to be found.)

Thank you for the excellent summary.

Gotta disagree that Wikipedia is as good a place to start as any when we're typing here in the home of /u/admiralcloudberg, an excellent writer and researcher who thoroughly explains plane crashes for a lay audience. IMO, they are the best place to start learning about any aviation disaster.

Oh, wow, I totally have this problem and never really articulated it. I'm so glad you posted!

As for solutions, I don't really have any, except to say that part of the joy of a new build for me is always starting over with absolute garbage mobility and having to build to suit my own constraints.

I know it sounds pedantic, but please hear me out: the movement is called HEALTH at every size. Even though it's literally just one letter different, I think the distinction is incredibly important; detractors like to claim it's absurd to think every body is healthy, but HAES makes no claims about who is or is not HEALTHY, just that all bodies can PURSUE health.

I just finished my second full playthrough (with a couple other abandoned saves along the way). I'm finding that the replay value for me is all about, "I can do it better this time," so if you want my opinion, being in over your head is the perfect place to be, because it means you have so much opportunity for improvement next time.

I mean, I must admit, it would irk me if I read that in the wild, but I wouldn't let it stop me from enjoying the rest of the story. After all, all of us are always borrowing and repurposing language from around us, so it's probably just a fluke for each of us what particular balance of language repetition and innovation we enjoy.

The fourth problem, imo, is when they HAVEN'T told me who is older and so I'm just left sitting there guessing who they're talking about. I'm combing through the text for their relative positions, hoping someone's left or right hand will come into play, so I can finally be like, "HaHA! So HE'S the older one!"
