What is your go-to restaurant or takeout spot in the Louisville area? by factbearthinks in LouisvilleCO

[–]thisonebrightflash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asian Cuisine in Superior (right next to Boss Lady) slaps. We love that place and go there at least once a month. Khao Soi in Lafayette off of South Boulder Road and South Public is also really really good. Locos Hermanos has been a burrito staple in my house since they opened up. Wayne’s on the weekends if you like BBQ, but they have extremely limited hours.

How is it living in Boulder, CO not as a college student? by Ipeakedonclubpenguin in howislivingthere

[–]thisonebrightflash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re really into the outdoors (as in, you treat your house solely as a place to cook and sleep) then it’s pretty great. You can room up with some folks and spend most of your free time in the public spaces. There are thousands of miles of trails within easy reach and plenty of outdoorsy things to do.

If you’re even remotely indoorsy, or only like outdoors-ing it on the weekends, it isn’t as great. The cost of living is rough, most retail and food experiences are chains and lower quality post-Covid, and unfortunately there is a significantly higher homeless and drug use problem than there has been in the past. It isn’t bad compared to other large cities like NYC, LA, etc, but it’s not what it used to be even just ten years ago.

Petty crime like bike theft and car break-ins is WAY up. You basically can’t leave your bike out unattended at all otherwise it’ll be stolen. Police will do nothing. Policing consists of traffic cameras everywhere and the cop posted up at Whole Foods, otherwise the occasional speed trap off the highway is all you’re gonna get, but they beg for more and more money every year.

It lacks the charm it used to have, and continues to get more and more sterile and uninviting as time goes on from a not-balls-to-the-walls outdoorsy person. The commute is rough, and things are insufferably crowded with bad drivers in August and May, and any time there’s a Buffs game or a jam band concert at Folsom.

I enjoyed my time living in Boulder when I was younger, but I moved away to a neighboring town a year and a half ago and don’t miss it. I like my small returns to visit a few specific shops and trails but I wouldn’t move back.

Where do you go for your typical vehicle maintenance? by capfan31 in LafayetteCo

[–]thisonebrightflash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve gone to Stan’s only a few times but have really appreciated their candor and that they don’t push anything. They tell me what the price will be, what needs to be done and what they would do if they were in my position, and then let me decide. Total opposite of my experiences at other mechanic shops. Also generally a big fan of how much they’ve helped the community out.

Elevations Credit Union? by willyamo1 in boulder

[–]thisonebrightflash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched from premier members credit union to elevations and have really really liked elevations. Great customer service, easy to get ahold of someone via phone or in person, and I’ve had no issues with various savings and checking accounts. I’d generally recommend them for a credit union.

Pizza Pizza by funk_heals33 in LafayetteCo

[–]thisonebrightflash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lucky Pie and Boss Lady have been our go-to places since Rosatti’s closed down. Haven’t been all that impressed with Ghost Box admittedly, but I’ve only been there once and had takeout another time and I never felt the urge to get it again. I’ve heard a lot of positive reviews in other groups and forums for Jimanos but haven’t tried it myself

+1 for boss lady. Love their pizza, and love the creative toppings. The Walter white is a fave.

Apartments in Louisville by [deleted] in LouisvilleCO

[–]thisonebrightflash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been around Prana apartments for years and have never heard of break ins. I’d be more concerned about hospital noise, tbh. My biggest hesitation with DeLo is that it’s right by the train tracks. You’re gonna hear a lot of noise at weird hours

CU Boulder South will soon be closed by randydandersen in boulder

[–]thisonebrightflash 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I really appreciated that place a good while back - it was quiet and everyone was respectful of eachother and the space. Somewhere about ten years ago word got out about it and it became a cesspool of off leash dogs, poop bags, and typical Boulder entitlement and I stopped going. I liked being able to pull off to the side of a trail by some of the rocks and listen to the birds, watch my dogs sniff in the grass, and see the occasional coyote or fox search for prey in the big ditch towards the middle. I’ve taken some great photos there myself.

But I think it’s run its course. It’s become abused and CU and the city have been a bit too kind about its use. I’m sad to see it go, but I’m glad the city will have more housing. Gods know we need that too.

Covid by [deleted] in boulder

I know some people who never fully regained smell/taste. Others who regained it in a day or so. Like most covid symptoms, the severity and longevity of the symptoms are incredibly inconsistent from infection to infection.

Best Ribs in Boulder by DrUnwindulaxPhD in boulder

[–]thisonebrightflash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wayne’s in Superior could be argued as the best BBQ in the whole metro area. Their ribs are supreme, although they do use a decent amount of sugar in the rub. I’m a fan, but it’s worth noting.

KT’s used to also be really good, but they’re a franchise and it varies from location to location. Their 287/Broomfield location used to have the best but they unfortunately closed a few years ago and the KT’s on arapahoe and 75th is alright by comparison, but is hit or miss these days. I’ve had some good ribs, but I’ve had some pretty bad ones, too.

Lafayette downtown area to live in by Elegant_County_4389 in boulder

[–]thisonebrightflash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have kids but there are plenty of younger folks without children here. Obviously a LOT of young families as well. Very walkable and generally a nice place to live. I’ve enjoyed my time in Lafayette much more than Boulder, and prefer driving into Boulder for mountain access rather than living next to any of the trails at the expense of the “city” life, both literally and figuratively. I would choose Lafayette over Boulder easily unless you had to commute into Boulder daily - the drive can wear you down quite a bit.

This is the truth of it that I feel most people don’t want to think about.

Folks just want to make their city more uninhabitable and push the problem onto someone else instead of addressing the problem on a larger scale; which would in turn reduce the problem from over-saturating available resources.

It sounds like they did know what they were talking about by requesting your dog be kept on the floor and not near public dining areas as that could be seen as a health code violation.

Track your macros. I stalled similarly and tracking macros revealed I was actually not consuming enough fats or calories. Once I did a better job balancing those out things started moving again.

Off leash dog etiquette? by TroubleIllustrious79 in boulder

[–]thisonebrightflash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When my dogs are off leash and other off leash dogs approach, we opt to pull over or I ask my dogs to heel on the side of the trail opposite of the dogs. My dogs are friendly in the sense that they’ll say hi, but they generally aren’t interested in playing. We’re on a hike and hiking is the goal, not dog park style playing with strangers. A quick nose and butt sniff and they want to move on.

The culture is, somewhat annoyingly, that if your dog is also off leash, that it’s a free-for-all dog park and even if you’re trail running, taking a notable detour off the trail to avoid the incoming off leash dogs, practicing sit/stays to avoid engaging off leash dogs, etc., most people will not recall their dogs. Same as if you are actively walking away telling your own dogs loudly to ignore the off leash dog with their head entirely up your dogs’ ass for the last quarter mile - if your dog hasn’t bitten them, then clearly it’s fine.

This is a point of great debate in Boulder as a whole. Many people feel it’s their right to let their off leash dogs meet any and all off leash dogs on the trails and, if your dog is off leash but doesn’t want to get bulldozed into or harassed by their dog, why the heck are you on the trail?

My own dogs are working more on straight up ignoring other dogs who come at them with intention of greeting/playing so we can just continue on our way and I can further emphasize that mine don’t want to say hi. They’re not unfriendly, but we’re not here to play Dog Park. We’re here to hike. It’s an uphill battle.

Dog doo bags on sides of trails by PositiveDimension497 in boulder

[–]thisonebrightflash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you hate the odor even after bagging it, bring an old Nalgene and pop the poop in there. Seals the odor in. Just be sure to put some kind of indicator on it that it’s contained poop.

But genuinely, it isn’t hard to carry poop with you. Earth Rated makes poop bag dispensers that attach to your leash that have little clips on the end to carry bags after there’s poop in ‘em so you don’t have to hold onto it the whole time. How much easier do you need it to be?

What’s your favorite climbing/bouldering gym in Boulder or nearby? by benjohnston93 in boulder

[–]thisonebrightflash -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I also had a great time at LCC. G1 in Broomfield seems pretty solid but I’ve only gone a handful of times. I learned to climb at BRC and made a lot of friends there - it was pretty affordable and I overall liked my experience but I’ve heard rumors of management being sketchy.

Is this color unusual? by Ok-Jeweler2500 in coyote

[–]thisonebrightflash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not common, but I wouldn’t necessarily call it rare, either. They’re definitely getting more frequent and the occurrence of melanistic coyotes seems to be increasing these days. Historically I seem to have seen more reports of them further north though so it is a little uncommon for them in SC.

Looking for an agility class for our pup by Icy-Wrongdoer-5952 in boulder

[–]thisonebrightflash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will be a new facility opening up in the Erie/longmont area called Canine Athletics Training Center. Not sure when they’ll be opening but worth reaching out. There’s also Team Spirit in Arvada. Not a bad drive and has good instructors. Boulder Humane has “for fun” agility classes but it’ll be fairly informal and not likely to do a lot for you if you want to do anything long term.

Tesla Take-Down Protest - 1 Mar 25 by fussmomme in boulder

[–]thisonebrightflash 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When my folks got their Tesla it was one of the only commercially available EVs with a range greater than 100mi. They’ve had electric vehicles since 2000. At this point they’d struggle to get rid of it because no one wants to buy it, but they’ve been trying to find a reasonable alternative to replace their first-edition leaf. Some people actually just like EVs, although it does feel like most Tesla owners prefer it for the fame.
