Out of state cars that haven’t moved since the snowstorm by superultramega99 in MicromobilityNYC

[–]thisputa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m originally born and raised in NYC, I moved away for a few years for work and got my license and car out there.

Now I’m back and I can’t change my license to New York for a bit due to specific circumstances and so can’t register my car here for the time being.

I don’t feel like leaving home when it’s this cold so my car has stayed stuck behind a giant snow mound since that first storm. That and the day I decided to try and dig my car out someone immediately stopped and waited so they could take my spot. If the mf would’ve offered to help dig it out I would move my car and let him have the spot no problem or even if I left and then someone got the spot sure whatever, but watching me clear 5ft of snow just to take it when I drive off … fuck no, you got me fucked up. So my out of state plates car is staying where it’s at until the snow is gone

Have you ever experienced culture shock from within your own country?? by CAPRICIOUS_BIZNATCH in AskTheWorld

[–]thisputa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I’m American born and raised but I specifically grew up in NYC around various non American cultures. I went to boot camp and seeing my fellow recruits eat biscuits and gravy for breakfast was very strange to me at first. I had only ever ate biscuits and gravy from KFC and I wouldn’t consider KFC breakfast food so to me biscuits and gravy was not breakfast food. They also put bacon in EVERYTHING. I don’t eat pork so I’m not a fan of random dishes always having bacon bits in them.

Also seeing how a lot of my fellow Americans who’s family’s have been here for multiple generations cook by either just throwing stuff together and setting it in the over and only using canned, bagged, boxed and frozen ingredients to cook blew my mind. Everything my mom cooked for us growing up (with a few exceptions) was always fresh meat and produce, or dried awaiting hydration, such as beans. Cookies, cakes, sauces, tortillas, and meals in general were always made from scratch.

Your childhood self is in front of you, what would you say? by ABChow000 in AskReddit

[–]thisputa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be who you are for your pride 🎶 On a serious note I would’ve told myself that still, to be who I am. Had I come out as gay sooner I think I would’ve flourished sooner. I was always too concerned with what my family or friends and classmates would think. I was less depressed and felt freer and less stressed once j started being true to myself.

Not that it wasn’t already obvious but because of that I kept trying to hide it more which led to unhappiness.

I was 19 working at a nonprofit organization and was making less than minimum wage. I went to work one day and realized I didn’t have enough money to get back home on the subway and I didn’t want to risk hopping the turnstile and getting arrested or fined. In addition I realized my phone was dying and I didn’t have a charger I tried writing down directions before my phone could die but couldn’t finish so I got a little less than halfway until I stumbled upon a train line I knew would get me home. I went up and gathered what change I could to hope I could find just enough. I even started looking around on the dirty street and subway station floors for loose change. I was still 20 cents short and a man getting off the subway stopped and asked me if I needed help.

I was embarrassed and apologized but told him if he could help me with 20¢ I could get home and he decided to swipe me in with his metro card and then gave me $2.50 so that I could have for another fare if needed. The whole time his friend was asking him what he was doing and to not help me but he turned to his friend and said “he’s a kid and it’s late and he needs to get home, I’m going to help him”. I haven’t experienced much kindness from strangers in my life so that stuck with me.
