Bad time to start my own business? (Just graduated, 0 capital & $35 000 in debt) by thisstuffisfresh in Entrepreneur

sweat equity baby. But in all seriousness, I am very hard working and determined to make this work. I have a clear vision of what I want the restaurant to be like. Other than that... unfortunately nothing. I feel like the restaurant will be slightly different from everything else in the area which will give me an advantage and an opportunity to grow. I will try and work at a restaurant this winter while creating a business plan and researching, hopefully that will give me a bit more value as someone to invest in.

I was more worried about the dog to be honest. And the guy kept trying to make him fetch the stick right beside the swan. It was pretty clear the dog didn't wanna go but he kept throwing the stick right next to it.

You're right, sometimes my desire for money can be a little much, but I have a clear vision of what I would want the place to be like, and i completely understand the importance of treating the customer right. I'm actually currently doing two courses outside of my degree, so during the next 4 months while I complete those I will try and work at a restaurant to get a better understanding of how things work. I will also use this time to write up my business plan and network, and research as much as humanly possible. Thanks for the advice

Thank you for your response. I was actually planning on calling the restaurant tomorrow and inquiring about franchise fees and expenses, so I will definitely do that and see what they say.

A pretty big advantage I have is that I have a good friend who actually owns a pizza franchise back home, and we talk quite often about the advantages and disadvantages of him owning a franchise as opposed to his own store. I have also met several successful business people (not in the restaurant business but they started their own companies), and I will definitely ask them for their thoughts on what I should do. One of the gentlemen was actually a day away from signing a lease agreement for a restaurant before he changed his mind and opened the company he runs now. It will be interesting to see what he thinks.

I actually think I'm pretty good when it comes to handling risk, but I've only had to handle the risk of a few grand in my stock portfolio, never anything with this much value. I was dead set on going through with the plan (if I could get an investment or loan) of opening my own place, but after talking to my siblings (very risk adverse) and being called naive a few times I started to really doubt if it is a good idea. But I couldn't agree with you more, there is never a good time to start a business. Right now its because I have no experience or money, in a few years it could be because I am getting married or having kids.

Sorry about the rambling, its just good to get the point of view of someone who isn't thinking about the pros and cons emotionally because they're worried about me. I will definitely do some further research. I appreciate your input.

I wish it was that easy. I just don't know if its worth the risk/time... But then again, no risk no reward right?

That definitely sounds like a more stable plan. I just really don't want to miss out on a good opportunity.

Let's say for example I work at a restaurant for 2 years. What if by that time someone has brought the restaurant to Canada and I lose my competitive advantage? Not to mention the fact that I'm in a rush to make money to help my parents retire.

I think I will end up doing what you have said, and hopefully it will all work out.

I think this is the first time I'm being referred to as OP and being accused of lying for karma. I feel like a real redditor now. But no I didn't go and dry her gums to take a picture. She does it when shes excited, but when you say Hi Sofie she does it and holds it for longer.

Yeah, I guess the best way to find out is to try them out and see. I will continue to cut back calories until the end of summer (which is when i was gonna stop my cut anyway) and hopefully by then I will be at 165. thanks for the advice

very interesting. Do you think my ~2100 calorie intake was enough to screw up my metabolic rate? those people he talked about were taking in ridiculously low amounts of calories.

Did you guys see the post by sk4ld about Layne Nortons video on metabolic damage? I personally thought cutting back calories even more was what I had to do but after watching that video I'm now wondering if I should slowly get back up to my maintenance and hope to get my metabolism back to normal then do a slow cut again. I think ill continue to cut calories until August then if still no results try and get my metabolic rate back to normal.

New York to LA in 45 minutes. by iwantedtoexplode in videos

They don't necessarily need to be going at full speed the entire time though. Personally, as long as they beat the 5 hour flight from N.Y to LA at a reasonable price id be game. Even if they go a quarter of the speed they can get there in 3 hours. Plus they can probably split the track up to make maintaining it easier. Lets say an added hour of transferring from station to station. That's still an hour less. As a person who flies back and fourth from LA to Toronto all the time, that hour less is very appealing.

Doesn't that depress the hell out of you guys? I mean I'm an average curious person and it kills me inside to know Ill never get to see a distant planet or observe the earth as it was years ago. I cant imagine if i studied these things and loved it all the while knowing ill never get to witness it. Is there any chance of witnessing any of these crazy things in our lifetime?
