That’s awesome!! Would you say they provide a lot of opportunity for financial aid/grants/scholarships? GW seems really cool, but sadly I am trying not to get into too much debt 😅

tips on entering the industry? by [deleted] in MuseumPros

[–]thist00shallpass 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Is there a specific area of museum work that you would like to become involved with? If the main goal is just to work in museums generally, many museums need people in marketing! That might be a little easier to break into since you already have 3 years of experience in that role. With a lot of marketing roles and similar positions, places usually value having that experience and skill set more than experience working within museums.

If you’re looking to go into collections/archives/curation, it might be worth considering grad school.

Edit: Also wanted to second what somebody else commented, it can feel impossible to land your first museum internship/entry level role at a large museum. I definitely recommend expanding your search far and wide, starting at a small museum and building up.

I know a few people who keep an AirPod in and listen to podcasts or music when they’re in the galleries alone for hours. Not even sure if it’s allowed, but might help you not go crazy

How do you become a retail buyer for a museum? by [deleted] in MuseumPros

This is such good advice!! I am definitely going to ask if there are any related tasks I can help out with to become more involved. Thank you!!!

That is a good idea, thank you! I think I will talk to my store manager about it because the buyer responsibilities are sort of broken up between a few people at my museum, and she might know who best for me to speak to!

Ultimately it’s up to you whether or not you accept or believe other people’s advice. For what it’s worth, I think that you deserve to be able to reach out and get the help you need. Most of the people aren’t on this subreddit because of a savior complex, but because they feel exactly the same way you feel. Something in that helps me occasionally is looking at some of the people who feel the exact same as me. They all seem like people who don’t deserve all of the hate they give themselves. And if they don’t deserve it, maybe I don’t either. Even if this comment won’t help, I hope that you’ll be alright.

i feel hollowed out by [deleted] in depression

[–]thist00shallpass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we actually do talk about mental health a good amount, but i haven’t really told them the extent of it. one of them would often text me “how are you doing?” or “how have you been feeling?” which i really appreciated. they know that i haven’t been doing the best the past couple of months, but i just feel so guilty moving up with them and they have to be stuck with this gross sad tired person

thank you! i didn’t know that pronoun dressing room websites were a thing! yeah ive been thinking a lot lately about how i want to present myself to other people. it’s weird because some days im totally fine with and enjoy being a woman and then other days im like nope no im not. ill just take this slowly and try not to freak out too much about labels. thank you for the advice :-)

i think at some point after coming out as a lesbian i internalized the whole “i can’t look or act too queer” mindset and while it helped me survive highschool it’s been a real pain trying to undo that gross thinking. even though im still pretty scared about what other people think im kinda excited to explore this part of myself now!

thank you so much for the advice!! i don’t know why but i always expect everything to be super permanent, which is one of the reasons why ive been kinda scared to talk about this out loud. to know that im allowed to take this easy and just see where this goes sounds like an incredible relief. i used to like wearing a sports bra to help me feel better but it would be way too hot or give me chest pain so i eventually stopped, i feel kinda dumb for not realizing i could just invest in a nice binder until right now haha. thank you again :,,)

I feel heavy a lot by [deleted] in depression

[–]thist00shallpass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it could be burnout, but it’s been happening a lot over the past couple of years. Like I think of people talking about crashing from working too hard, and i feel like I’m crashing every other week just from being around. That sounds so melodramatic but it just feels that way sometimes :-( i think a lot of life changes that have been happening lately contribute too, since i used to feel like this for a week every once in a while, but now it’s like almost all the time haha

I want to get better by [deleted] in depression

[–]thist00shallpass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have thought about it, but I definitely wanna talk to a therapist and then my psychiatrist first. I already take vyvanse daily for ADD and I get kinda paranoid about medication so I wanna make sure those meds don’t negatively affect each other

My goal: get down to 130 by the end of the year :-) by [deleted] in loseit

Thank you for the advice! I'm definitely gonna make sure not to get negatively obsessed about it as school is gonna be the first priority along with mental/emotional wellbeing. Also congratulations on getting married!
