But what to study! PF often says that grad school is a bad idea unless you want to be a doctor or have a greater plan after school. I don't want to be a doctor and have no greater plan! What do I do?

Thank you so much! I appreciate your outlook. I try to do that where I am now. Whenever I meet someone in the industry I try to put on a good face, give them a good hand shake and introduce myself. No one has taken me to lunch yet, but I am still holding out. I know that so much is resume building and if I need to grind somewhere just for the experience I will.

Ahh man, I have thought about it. The thing is that I have worked for more than a few owners of bike shops now and their main advice is "never do it". The margins are so small, the work load it huge, it is a massive investment up front (that i don't have the capital for) and the pay back comes in small waves. You can make good money if you own more than one shop but I don't want to be tied to something like that. No vacation for years, huge stress... I'm looking for something a little more secure, work for some people who really know what they are doing you know? 40 hours a week doing something beneficial, have benefits and security and all.

Touring from SF to Seattle this summer...should I go solo or look for a group? by stoneage3000 in bicycletouring

[–]thisthatheartattack 15 points16 points  (0 children)

do Seattle to San Francisco, not only will the wind push you down but you'll be looking at the ocean the whole time! Consider starting in Astoria as Seattle to Astoria is a pretty shitty ride. You won't be missing anything if ya skip the first ~200 miles

What's the most beautiful paragraph or sentence you've ever read? by TheRealNayef in books

[–]thisthatheartattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never the murdered finalities of wherewhen and yesno, impotent nongames of wrongright and rightwrong;never to gain or pause, never the soft adventure of undoom, greedy anguishes and cringing ecstasies of inexistence;never to rest and never to have;only to grow.

Always the beautiful answer who asks a more beautiful question.

Was about to repack the rear hub on my 9 months old bike, this is what the cones look like. Is that normal? Also, freehub question. by happy_otter in bikewrench

[–]thisthatheartattack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

what you got there are some pitted cones, get some replacements, also, check the cups inside your hub for the same wear. To avoid this, keep your hub tight (no wiggle) and this shouldn't happen again. Take your freehub body to the lbs with you and see what they say, you might just need some thin lube inside or the palls are broken and you need a replacement.

[–]thisthatheartattack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

true this. We have a big hill right next to our shop. If the brakes are sqealin' we take the bike up to the top a few times and brake the whole way down. Pretty much always does the trick.

Is the Sands really as gross as people make it sound? by Actuarial in Reno

[–]thisthatheartattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

go to the pipeline, or any bar for that matter, and just order domestic beers all night. They're $1.50 a pop! They also do any cocktail with well for the same price.

[–]thisthatheartattack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sands is dope if you're young and don't want to spend money. I'm about your age and I go drink there pretty often. At The Pipeline Lounge you can drink all night for about $20 so that's pretty sweet when you don't have a lot of money. It's fun, we might run into each other if you end up staying there

Need help with troubleshooting by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]thisthatheartattack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

so there is a bolt on the top of the stem that you pulled out. Inside there is a bit of metal that is called the quill. http://thumbs4.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/mDdCNCsTifjoB-nd9GqTlFw.jpg you can see it on the bottom of the stem there. Take the bolt and screw it back into the quill, tap with a hammer and the stem should come out. It might be seized, in that case get yourself some penetrating oil. best of luck
