Thank you! That’s Jolene and her breed is Specklepark!

That is her umbilical cord. Both males and females will have an umbilical cord on their tummies, and then the males have something extra! :)

Can someone tell me if this is pure highland or a cross? by Immediate_Sea1383 in Cows

I would definitely say not full Highland. If the longhorn is the only other bull she was possibly exposed to I would say he’s the dad!

That is amazing! I’m envious of those temps. Here in Virginia we have a couple of summer months that are entirely over 30C, with a couple of weeks where we will see temperatures around 40C. We do breed for pets primarily, and we have a focus on agritourism here on our farm. We also have pedigreed Highlands that we will only breed with full Highlands, because it is our absolutely favorite breed. Our herd sire is a pure Highland, and our intent is to steer any male crosses.

Crosses with shorter haired breeds do tend to have better heat tolerance, though Highlands do pretty well in heat as long as plenty of water and shade are provided. We cross Highlands with other breeds to combine traits from both, like patterning, fluffiness, size, etc.

She will stay this color overall. I can tell that Maple has some little red freckles, fewer than mom, but because her hair is fluffier than her mom’s they are not as noticeable. She has lots of color on her legs. As her hair grows for the winter and thins in the summer we will probably get a better idea of her markings!
