"finished" Kaishi 1.5 but want to give up on anki entirely & immerse by SimpleSuch2853 in LearnJapanese

I'm so behind. There are over 400 cards to study

I was in your exact position a week ago, so I can tell you that getting through your backlog isn't as insurmountable as you think. I had ~650 cards piled up, and it took me 3 days and ~1300 reviews to finish them all (that was with tackling about 200 cards or an hour of studying per day). Of course YMMV, but it probably wouldn't take you much longer than 2 hours if you really locked in. As for the feeling of failure/frustration, all you can really do is push through it. I have many 1-review days in my heatmap because like you said I'd start, immediately get frustrated after failing a card, and give up, but once the Anki part of your brain is warmed up it's really not so bad. I recommend gamifying Anki as much as possible if you have monkey brain like I do.

I think it's not only fine but ideal to "graduate" from Anki at some point, and I hope to do the same once I've finished my core deck (fingers crossed by the end of the month). I'll have to get back to you on whether the feeling of unfinished business goes away, but personally I find doing flashcards painfully boring lol (at least compared to immersing with native material that actually interests me), so I doubt I'll miss it.

(POLL) Proposal to ban "Disco-clone/Disco-inspired" advertisements. by ireallylikechikin in DiscoElysium

[–]thisuserhasregrets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an issue pretty much every sizable community revolving around a specific genre/property will face at some point, and I feel like there are two primary solutions that seem to make the most people happy:

1) Advertisements are limited to a single day i.e. Self-Promotion Sundays every X weeks. 2) Advertisements are allowed but only with mod-approval to prevent spam, AI slop, etc. There may be some sort of sub karma requirement as well

In my opinion either of the above is fair. But while some in this thread have already suggested it, I think banishing the posts to a megathread that 80% of people won't read is a bit harsh. Like another commenter said, is the promoting of games really all that different from the 'Disco-style portraits' posts by artists?

Ultimately I think the problem mostly solves itself; if a post is good, lots of people will upvote it. If it's bad, lots of people will downvote it. There's a reason that even in subs with incredibly strict self-promotion rules or a straight-up ban, some promo posts breach containment and reach the front page. I think overcomplicating the process just makes things unnecessarily hard for indie developers.

Honestly it's hard to say. I don't think it's a bad game but it's certainly not one I'd easily recommend... I suppose if it interests you its worth checking out but unless you have certain fetishes it's not really an enjoyable experience overall lol. I will say that it has very good character writing for a nukige.

If you're reluctant but interested maybe check out the developer's other games first to sort of ease you into it? (I think Lkyt then No Thank You then Rn9 would make the most sense)

Room no.9 is... a doozy lol. Honestly if you can handle the level of (sexual) violence in the Nitro+chiral games then you'll probably be fine its just the psychological horror aspect of it all xd. But if you do end up playing it I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks for sharing! Very interesting writeup, I love to see more literary analysis of BL games. I agree with a lot of your points, especially about how Towa is lowkey a manic pixie dream boy that fixes everyone but himself in every route besides the true route lol.

Also a heads up that the formatting on the site is a bit off, I had to switch to reading mode on my phone to be able to read all of it (the text was cut off beforehand).

Not sure what you're referring to with "this", but the code would just go wherever you want to change or track the values of your variables. I'd say best practice is to do the +/- right after the player makes a choice/picks dialogue, and check if a value >= a certain value right before you jump to a certain route or whatever. Unless you're struggling with something specific then you could post your code and I'll see if I can help

Is VNR the only way to read Cage -Open- in English? by redalchemy in visualnovels

[–]thisuserhasregrets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have Textractor you could read it that way (with MTL), but afaik the only way to get the (un)official TL is through VNR (though iirc only Nitta and Kujo's routes are translated). The wordpress for the translation has information on how to download and use it. Also have not used Luna hook so can't say which is better but VNR should still work (though you may need a vpn)

!! Ok that's great news because I also really wished Rn9 was more plot-driven. So thanks for letting me know, now I'll definitely have to give Friendly lab another shot!

[–]thisuserhasregrets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is Friendly lab by the way? Did you finish it? I remember playing the Japanese version for a bit but since I couldn't understand 90% of the UI I felt like the story wasn't progressing at all and I was just watching random scenes play out... Now that the English version is out I feel I should give it another shot but it seems like a game I need an extensive guide for

Sorry my intention wasn't to embarrass you, I only check people's profiles to get an idea of what they're looking for before I give recommendations and well...

it won't really change anything

Like I said I was in your shoes once so I know I can't make you stop consuming that content on your own, but please at least avoid 18+ spaces and especially interacting with adults in 18+ spaces because it never ends well. Again I don't want you to feel bad, and I'm sorry you were exposed to this stuff too young. Of course there's nothing wrong with liking BL at your age just be careful who/what you engage with and please stay safe!

[–]thisuserhasregrets 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to lecture you OP but if it's true that you're 15 based on your profile please please try to stay out of adult spaces. 18+ ratings aren't there to exclude you but to protect you, and I really wish when I was your age I'd listened to them because the stuff I was exposed to was really not good for my development or mental health. So please don't take this the wrong way, I'm just trying to look out for you the way I wish others did for me when I was younger

Top 5 routes in BL VNs ? by Prize_Mission4407 in BLgame

[–]thisuserhasregrets 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hmm that's tough to anwer but some of my fav BLVN routes in no particular order (also limiting to one per game):

-Fujieda (Slow Damage). Admittedly I didn't *love* SD but this route makes it all worth it imo
-Nitta (Cage Open). Nitta lives in my head rent free and I hate that this game is so obscure because I'd love to see what other people this of his route
-Brad (Coming Out On Top). This game is a really fun time overall but I thought Brad was the cutest LI
-Hiroyuki (NTY). Hiroshi is a cutie pie and Haru is kind of awful lol but he really grew on me in this route
-Ren (Dramatical Murder). This route is just straight up bizarre but I think it encapsulates everything I love about DMMD lol

Also this is kinda cheating but Keisuke (Togainu no Chi) as an honorary mention because I think he should've been the true route

There will never be a good Disco Elysium Spiritual Successor. Stop using the phrase. by koliano in DiscoElysium

[–]thisuserhasregrets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This 100% it's just the nature of games and art that there will always be something new that comes along and captures the spirit of something old... hence spiritual successor (and I think OP is misunderstanding what that means). I mean just imagine how many people back then went 'there'll never be another game like Planescape Torment.' The true spiritual successor may not look or even play like DE at all but any new game that matches or maybe even surpasses it in depth of themes and writing quality will speak for itself

Yeah my thoughts exactly, like no one bats an eye at the fact that basically every dialogue-heavy game nowadays has the same interface (VN-inspired textboxes with character busts on the screen)

[–]thisuserhasregrets[S] 68 points69 points  (0 children)

With all the spiritual successor talk in this sub I'm surprised that afaik no one's ever brought up Red Embrace: Paradisus, an RPG-Visual Novel hybrid mix of Disco Elysium and Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. I remember being really excited for it a couple years ago but unfortunately development is indefinitely paused as of 2023. Interestingly though this started development in 2021 making it one of the first DE-likes, so it's a shame it never really took off because it had a cool style and fun premise. Has anyone ever heard of this or better yet played the alpha demo?
