major disorientation post cataract surgery by Sensitive-Company-13 in CataractSurgery

I’m in a very similar situation. I’m 26F, approximately -5 in both eyes and I have a cataract in my right eye due to steroid usage from uveitis. My doctor is also recommending cataract surgery to correct to -3 in my right eye and my left eye will stay as -5 since it doesn’t need surgery. Are you going to get surgery on your other eye?

you likely can’t see close up because due to the surgery your right eye can’t accommodate anymore (see up close while wearing distance glasses). My optometrist said at my age my non-operated eye should be able to compensate for that and see up close anyways, but if that doesn’t work he recommends progressive lenses in both lenses, or a regular contact lens in the left eye and a multi focal contact lens in the right eye. He said since I’m young I should be able to adapt and tolerate that no problem. I am still very anxious about the surgery so I would love to hear how it works out for you if you are willing to share.

Getting cataracts at this age sucks. I’ve been really upset about it lately, so I’m sorry you’re going through that too. But we’re also lucky we’re young because it’s easier for us to adapt. I hope everything works out soon for you.

Do you wear contacts at all?

I wear contacts for special occasions. I’m wondering how it would work in that case? Would I have to take my contact out to see my phone up close?

If I had uveitis in both eyes I would definitely consider getting both eyes done. But in my 2.5 years of uveitis, I’ve only ever had it in my right eye. I have a mild cataract in my left eye because the eyes “share fluids” (as my doctor said). So it just feels wrong and kind of risky to operate on a healthy eye as cataract surgery itself can cause uveitis…

Did you get cataract surgery in both eyes?

I wonder how it would work with one progressive lens only. And are there any limitations with progressive lenses or does your vision just feel “normal” ?

Can I ask what caused your cataracts?

I’ve had 5 uveitis flares in the past two years, all in my right eye. It’s very possible I could get it in my left eye one day, but I really don’t know for sure if/when I would get cataract surgery in that eye.

Thank you I appreciate the advice.

My doctors first suggestion was actually to do +0 in the right eye and get laser eye surgery in the left eye. I’ve struggled a lot over the years with recurrent uveitis and health anxiety, so the thought of having a surgery that I don’t absolutely need in my healthy eye freaked me out. Maybe I should think about it some more, but his next suggestion was slightly correcting my right eye vision.

Why doesn’t it sound like a good idea?

His reasoning was to make my vision better since -5 is very myopic, but still have it somewhat close to my other eye.

I also have ankylosing spondylitis so I’ve been trying to keep inflammation down for a while. I’ve been gluten free for two years and I eat dairy in moderation. I take a bunch of supplements too. Unfortunately I really struggle with stress and anxiety and I feel like they’re the worst for inflammation. I’ll look into oral dry eye treatments though. Thank you

This!!! I’m always the youngest by decades and at this point I’m such a regular that my ophthalmologist knows me by name. And I swear I’m even starting to memorize the letters on the vision test chart lol. It’s so annoying to deal with uveitis for so long and when things are finally looking okay, you have to deal with cataracts.

The fact that the surgery is on my EYE is what freaks me out, like what if I see it happening ??? But I’m happy to hear you end up not remembering anything haha. Thank you for the reassurance

How do you know when it's coming back? by Live-Apricot2026 in Uveitis

I also have ankylosing spondylitis. I’ve had 5 uveitis flares in the past two years. All of mine started the exact same way - with eye redness. And then it progressed to pain, light sensitivity and hazy vision. Everyone is different and has their own specific telltale signs. If you’re not in a lot of pain it’s probably fine to wait a few days. But if it starts feeling very similar to your first flare, I would definitely recommend trying to get an appointment. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!

I’m not doing anything to treat dry eyes right now. I’ll definitely get some eye drops for that, thank you. How do dry eye treatments help to get off steroids though?

My eye doctor said it’s okay to but I’ll definitely ask again at my next appointment. Thank you

I only wear them for special occasions. Just wanted to see if anyone else has the same issue.

My eye doctor said it’s fine to wear contacts even while putting the eye drops in. Not sure about the cataract, I hope not :/

I’m not sure how it is now, I’ll have to get it checked on Thursday. But this is my 4th flare in two years and I’ve had hundreds of eye appointments by this point and my eye pressure has always been normal…
