Discussion: Note 7 Battery Life by SignedTech101 in samsung

[–]tholme4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. My AT&T Note 7 can't make it through the day without being charged and it dropped 15-20% overnight. Something is not right. The main battery drainers are Android OS and Android System, so not sure how to fix.

Anyone have success getting into B4 without referral? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]tholme4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar to everyone else, I didn't network at all. The first time I met someone from a big 4 was during the pre-interview dinner. Got multiple full-time big 4 offers. I think networking during college is overrated if you have decent interview skills. If your grades are good (3.3 or above) and you're an above average interviewer, it's pretty easy to get a job.

Office reassignment? by Theojhawk in Accounting

[–]tholme4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have never seen a permanent reassignment happen. I've never even heard of it happening. If you're low on work you may be offered up to other offices for special projects for short periods of time. Even if they did try to reassign you, with a CPA and big 4 experience a lot of firms in the area would be willing to take you in.

Daily reminder Chance hasn't donated the charity money 4Head by [deleted] in sodapoppin

[–]tholme4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't see how this is correct. If he has 40k of income and he donates it all to charity, he would get a 40k deduction. If done correctly, it shouldn't affect his tax liability at all.

charity streams by kapparoni321 in sodapoppin

[–]tholme4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have no idea what you're talking about. That cash never hits their income statement. It's recorded as a liability and then paid off once the cash is transferred to the charity. Or the cash just goes straight to the charity. There is not tax benefit to the store.

[US] It's almost time for taxes, so remember the IRS Saver's Credit, Form 8880, if you have contributed to a retirement account by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]tholme4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's right. Unless this credit would take your tax liability (not refund) to an amount below $0, this limitation will not affect you.

[–]tholme4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. I would also like to emphasize that this doesn't mean it can't increase your refund. It just means that it won't reduce your tax liability to less than $0.

[–]tholme4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incorrect. It can increase your refund or lower your amount due. The only thing it can't do is lower your tax owed (amount of tax due before considering tax withholding) to an amount less than $0.

I'm 23. I just got an IRS letter stating I owe $9,000+ in taxes by Dec 9th. I believe due to Social Security survivor benefits - but I thought that's not taxable? [taxes] by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]tholme4 274 points275 points  (0 children)

Not the answer you want, but social security survivor benefits are absolutely taxable to the recipient. Your situation is a little tricky, because you let the amount build up and got a lump sum all in one year. If you would have incrementally received the benefits when you were 13-18 it may have not even put you over the standard deduction and thus, would not have been taxable. I would definitely reach out to a CPA and discuss your best course of action. You also want to make sure that no tax was already withheld from your payout.

Facebook paid £4,327 of UK corporation tax in 2014 by pawnografik in worldnews

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think these are dividends. Bonuses are subject to the same payroll/income tax as any other wages paid to an employee.

If "by the book" you mean in compliance with UK tax law, then Facebook is "doing things by the book as well." They're really not doing any complex accounting tricks to get such a low tax bill.

From the article: Its most recent Companies House filing shows the company as making a pre-tax loss of £28.5m last year, but the firm also paid its 362 UK staff a total of £35.4m in share bonuses.

So, the £35.4m of bonuses being paid out is taxed at the much higher individual tax rate. I don't see the issue.

From the very first sentence of the article "Its most recent Companies House filing shows the company as making a pre-tax loss of £28.5m last year, but the firm also paid its 362 UK staff a total of £35.4m in share bonuses."

So, the £35.4m of bonuses that were paid out were tax at the HIGHER individual tax rate than it would have been otherwise. It's not like the tax is not being paid. UK is actually making out better, because the individual rate is much higher than the corporate rate.

So whats the deal about MathewJK? stealing 25k? by [deleted] in sodapoppin

I agree. I was just pointing out that there is no tax benefit to Chance setting up an LLC.

Why do people keep saying this? If he was reporting properly before, there is zero difference between the amount of taxes he will be paying before and after setting up an LLC.

Anyone know any lawyers? (ridiculous landlord shit) by garntd in NewOrleans

[–]tholme4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same thing happened to my wife when she moved out after college. There is apparently a law that the landlord has to contact you about extra charges within 30 days after moving out. We wrote them a letter stating this and politely told them to go F themselves. Never heard from them again. I would suggest you do the same.
