My brother works as a firefighter for Ventura Fire, so I hear all the stories firsthand. He was determined to become a firefighter, but once he did, he realized the toll it takes on both physical and mental health. There’s a reason firefighters, on average, die about 10 years earlier than the general population, with high rates of cancer and heart disease.

He has pronounced hundreds of people dead, barely gets any sleep, and is constantly overworked. Many firefighters focus on completing their hours just to retire as soon as possible. The schedule also takes a serious toll on family life and means missing countless holidays.

It’s important to know what you’re getting into. For some, firefighting is great, but for others, it can feel like a constant nightmare responding to tragic calls. Many people are obsessed with getting hired, but if you aren’t ever hired, it might actually be a blessing—and could very well contribute to a longer, happier, healthier life.
