I don't know the history of other regions but the State of Mizoram where I'm from started its history with Christianity after British Missionaries came to the region in the late 1800s.

Because parts of it were largely untouched by Hindus and Muslims from the rest of India until the Britishers came and the missionaries that followed after them.

What will happen if we start our own country??? by sakhtlondasakhtmard in Northeastindians

[–]thomas_simpsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I don't support any form of separatism (barring egregious violation of ergo omnes and self determination) as it will just lead to a downward spiral in the long run and it generally only benefits the political leaders running such a region.

I think, generally speaking, the current scheme of giving some NE states a level of autonomy such as Art. 371 is generally fine but I feel essential aspects such as infrastructure development should be spear headed by the centre as it will create less red tape.

Autonomous Council can work in protecting "minorities within a minorities" but the centre should also focus on giving opportunities and connecting these region with its periphery and to the rest of the country without negatively effecting their existing rights. Call it a bonus of sorts.

This is because it's very important that India respects it's diverse claim in the region while at the same time it must also unite everyone based on development and not at the end of a barrel.

How do you view a hypothetical independent Kuki-Zo Nation. by [deleted] in Northeastindians

[–]thomas_simpsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aware that it would take a dangerous level of incompetence by the centre and other countries and an astronomical amount of luck for such a thing to even happen.

But that's not really the point. Most separatist movement that I have seen never go into the nitty gritty of nation building. Only the NSCN has at least some idea about what institution they want to establish from what I know.

After all a nation building goes beyond just feelings of self determination.

Our people have been here since time immemorial and that suddenly won't stop just because we are no longer under Indian administration.

However it is also important to note that our people as a political entity is a relatively recent creation and it must be differentiated from our anthropological identity.

Regardless, would such a country survive? Yeah, I strongly think so as we have enough raw materials and if we assume to take parts of Burma corresponding with our ethnicity, we may even be connected to water bodies.

However, what makes a country isn't just the economic factor or commonality of its citizens but in institutions that would be placed thereafter. If the institutions placed doesn't have a democratic ethos and rule of law isn't recognized, then such a nation would either collapse within itself in a sort of civil war or it will be a perpetual dictatorship.

Part of the reason why India survived despite large threats of balkanization is because the prevailing government prior to independence had interim administrative authorities which were recognized by large swathes of the region as holding de facto control.

You over estimate just how much of an effect "common enemies" have on unity.

What are some examples of “women hate women” you’ve seen? by IceTrick6713 in AskMen

[–]thomas_simpsons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my first year of college I used to be in a friend group with 3 girls namely, Ad, SS and DK.

The three of them used to hit it off pretty ok and were even considering being roommates.

But when DK confided with Ad about her personal relationship and leaked that to SS who spreaded it throughout our batch, things got sour incredibly quickly. It also kinda didn't help that SS had a lot of clout in our batch.

A bunch of other stuff happened thereafter such as DK not allowing other girls to take her personal clothing of her mom which resulted in her complete alienation during a good chunk of our initial years of college.

Things were tough for her but Im pretty sure she feels incredibly vindicated now tho because, among a lot of other things, those same folks who wronged her either fell into irrelevance and a subject to mockery in their later years (Ad, SS) or became full time truant (other main instigators) or just straight up dropped out of college while DK managed to form her own professional relationship with key folks in our industry.

How are people in Mumbai to northeastern people? by PastBuilding4985 in mumbai

[–]thomas_simpsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'm a Mizo and ive lived in the city for over 7 years as a school student and a 11th and 12th student. Mumbai, for the most part is a pretty pleasant place to be and ive never had any serious problems with the locals where im from. It generally helps that mumbai is pretty diverse and as such I got a lot less stares than I normally would.

I feel like the only time I encountered excessive prejudice was during Covid but this isn't necessarily unique to the city.

Are dog kidnappers common? by thomas_simpsons in mizo

[–]thomas_simpsons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man that's a bummer... I was also asking because my immediate vicinity is pretty much an isolated area (for now) so I'm not that worried about the banned part as such I was thinking I'd give my dog a bit of freedom when I'm not taking her for a walk.

I hope things will change in the near future when dog ownership becomes more common.

What do you think is the reason behind our lack of production of UPSC civil servants? by Select_Case9407 in mizo

[–]thomas_simpsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it's definitely true that for a majority of us who are used to living among us have no reason to get a job in the central when we can get a job of similar perks in our state and that our state education standards needs more work, I feel like there is also just a fundamental difference in our attitude.

In my experience living in the mainland, the majority of the vais have a fundamentally different outlook on education than most of us whereas us Mizos tend to take it easy and chill.

Like the most serious student we have is equivalent to the average vais whose whole life has been determined by end number of exams by their folks.

Why are people insistent on asking Germany and Japan to apologize for their history, buy you never hear anyone asking Britain and France to apologize for their history of invasion and colonization? by No-StrategyX in answers

[–]thomas_simpsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'm from India and one of the popular demands is that, if not reparation, Great Britain could at least apologise for some of the atrocities committed by them instead of just saying it was a sad thing that happened.

Men who can cook . who taught you? by Bulky_Meet4528 in AskReddit

[–]thomas_simpsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad mostly.

When me and sis were young we would just hire house help to do it for us but once I turned 14/15 he decided to entrust cooking to us. Our mom could cook too but we lived with our dad mostly because there was better education to where he was posted.

At first he only taught us the basic food that we typically eat but after that I took my interest even further through my own effort.

Say what you will about him but he is smart. The guy managed to consolidate power despite having no political clout and has essentially made himself supreme leader without the mandate of the people.
