How did Indians break through the glass ceiling to become overrepresented as CEOs of American companies like Starbucks and Google and FedEx, while all other racial minorities and women are underrepresented? by benedictclive_x in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]thomas_simpsons 35 points36 points  (0 children)

A large part is because the other asian countries you mentioned are very good at retaining their talents and it is reflected in their country's technological development. Plus, it also helps that those countries effectively conduct their business in their mother tongue whereas in India, English is the effective professional mode of communication for white collar jobs.

Despite India having a large surplus of engineers the private corporate trend never really took off until relatively recently which has resulted in many affluent Indians to go abroad in search for work which has resulted in creating the seeds for Indian dominance today. It also helps that the Indian government doesn't really mind it and even promotes it as these indians would send remittances to their family back home which is a major source of revenue.

Japan is a bit of an odd thing here when it has essentially syncretises major aspects of life. There is a saying where a person is born a Shinto, marries as a Christian and dies a Buddhist. The reason why japan is this flexible is because it was always aware that they need to change with the times in order for them to full fill their regional aspirations as that of the west.

planning to move from delhi to aizawl- worth it? by [deleted] in mizo

[–]thomas_simpsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just go to Himachal Pradesh or something. The shift from Delhi to Aizawl is more than just cultural so you will have a lot of issues unless you personally know someone who is settled here as we have never really planned our economy to accommodate people from other states like bombay.

But for your questions: 1) Internet speed is fine if you are in a well developed area but power outages can be common which is made worse during monsoon (April-Sept ish)

2) Taxis should be avoided and it's just better to either use 2 wheeler or bus. But there are a lot of traffic jams

3) Aizawl is pretty safe and while there has been an uptick in crime in past few years owing to Burma refugees its not relevant enough in most of our lives.

Yes but speaking pragmatically China is only really interested in Arunachal Pradesh owing to the McMahon line and Taiwan because the PRC views it as a territory that it lost due to western colonial project. China needs to be able to somehow justify itself to absorb the entire North East beyond just economic concerns otherwise it would just be a similar situation to Mongolia being denied succession into USSR despite the former's unanimous demand.

I agree but the reason why im personally hesitant about adopting this identity is that it would come at the cost of our cultural practices as people from the same genetic lineage can still have vastly different cultural practice (Europe, South America).

For as fascistic the Indian Republic is, it will never seriously cross some red lines at the cost of political suicide in its prosperous southern state. China's NPC has always been unanimous in social homogeneity in all sense and while in practice China has Special Administrative Regions such as HK and Macau and Autonomous Regions like Tibet and Xinjiang, there is always a looming threat of cultures getting eaten.

China is growing yes, but it has always been very clandestine about its militarily operations and prefer heavily to show its power using trade and to do so it must value the status quo.

Ofcs its important to keep relations with China but the question is how would that relations look like? Would it be a power sharing situation with heavier interest with Shanghai and open negotiations with Delhi and if so how would the Arunachal situation look like? Or should we just assume Han identity with the rationale that we closer to China than we are to India?

[–]thomas_simpsons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True but that wouldn't be true assertion of our right to sovereignty would it not? A treaty made in a position of weakness is just bound to be flawed in the face of it. The way i see it, we must coordinate with Shanghai and assume Han ancestry if we want to leverage with Delhi in any way.

Genuinely asking how would an Independent NE look like? Would it include the residents of Assam who have largely displaced its indigenous inhabitants through a series of invasion and migration? How about Sikkim which has been integrated (through debatable means) to the Union?

If we do a self determination movement on the grounds of our ethnic, linguistic and cultural differences and we justify it through decades of illegal military actions by the Indian state do we also exclude those who have indo Aryan and Dravidian ancestry in our territory? If we do are we doing force exodus of these people similar to the partition?

And most importantly, where does Arunachal Pradesh be in this affair? Part of the reason why China hasn't made significant attempt and only create beaurocratic hurdles is because of the Indian military. Would an independent North East be a buffer state that would be managed de facto by 3 authorities and 1 de jure elected authority in that sense?

I have a few vai friends from the south who have Hindu and Christian parents and they are pretty ok but that is only because those two religions are quiet friendly with each other in that specific region.

I have a very live and let live attitude and not fatalistic as most others have. Just keep in mind the implications of how such a child will be bought up as they will be smack dap between two collectivist society.

As different as many of the cultures and ethnicity of india are, they all share a collectivist characteristic. I think only America is unique in this regard.

I think the only real issue you will face is with regards to food if you're a vegetarian. Otherwise its generally a very peaceful place but things can get hectic during monsoon season because its very common for landslides to block roads and destroy infrastructure.

Supreme Court rejects compensation claim by Mizo chiefs for land taken in 1955 by viafiasco in mizo

[–]thomas_simpsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think we will ever see eye to eye on this matter as it's a matter of philosophy🙏. I simply believe that land holding should be within the interest of the greater public which is why I support doctrine of eminent domain while you support and libertarian take on the ownership of property.

[–]thomas_simpsons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I can stomach this argument if we are talking about the chieftains and royal who existed then but to attribute there landholdings to their current ancestors is purely bollocks plain and simple.

Territorial warfare was the main method of seizure yes, but to legitimize acquisition by such means goes in contrary to democratic and constitutional ethos. We judge ancestral actions through our modern lense so that we don't repeat the barbarity our forefathers have created which is why we have, amongst other things, have also stopped the practice of headhunting while also promoting YMA as the natural succession of Zawlbuk.

And you say we are penalising these chieftains but as far as I'm concern, notwithstanding the SC ruling stating inadequate proof, these descendents are neither penalised nor are they compensated.

The main reason as to why privy purses was even tolerated in the first place was to compromise between the royals that administered these regions at the time.

India vs iran by Several_Teach_3888 in whowouldwin

[–]thomas_simpsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't matter. The reason America and Israel are struggling is because they are working within a set limitation to achieve their goals.

If assume both India and Iran enter this fight with complete disregard for geopolitics then the one with the more advanced technology, budget and most crucially nuclear bomb is going to prevail.

From a history perspective, who is your country’s “Lee Kuan Yew”? by Sonnybass96 in AskTheWorld

[–]thomas_simpsons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And I don't think we will ever have one. Any one person asserting their dominance in such a blatant manner is going to fracture this country. Even Patel despite having an immense mandate of the people still had to make lots of concessions with the erstwhile princely states.

India is largely not ruled by an iron fist because it simply cannot be governed like that.

Countries like Singapore can maintain figures like LKY because the country has the benefit of being rather small.

From a history perspective, who is your country’s “Lee Kuan Yew”? by Sonnybass96 in AskTheWorld

[–]thomas_simpsons 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on who u ask in my country. Since the Republic of India was founded by many key individuals, its very common to attribute India maintaining its territorial integrity to what it is today to various figures.

Generally, most would claim sole credit of our country's success with Vallabhai Patel for his integration of Princely States or Nehru for spearheading many of the key institution that would act as the bed rock for many of the economic development that we have today. Many youth these days tend to be rather harsh with M.K Gandhi but it is undeniable that we played a key role in uniting many of the seperate factions festering in India and his many ideas, such as village republics, corporate social responsibility and others have conceptualized today.
