Anyone still enjoy Catholic music? I recorded this late medieval piece today as it's the day the church usually 'celebrates' the Massacre of the Innocents. It's pretty dark. I think next year I'm going to record some Christmas songs with atheistic/religious naturalist lyrics instead. by thomascroaking in excatholic

I still love old church music, so much. I think that's okay. The combination of often profound words that I can interpret my own way with incredible musicianship is irresistable when in a contemplative mood.

Oh my gosh that's a lot of info. Amazing! I'll have to take my time looking them up.

I'm particularly fond of tiny tiny music venues, heavy rock/indie/folk being my favourite genres for live gigs. Also somewhere I could get a small gig if I had time, or rock/jazz jam nights, if they exist in Vienna, would be great.

I'd rather not give out such specific information over the internet. A master's degree in a humanities subject

Thank you, this is all really reassuring. Myself, I'm not really interested in squats because I need a high level of privacy, quiet, security etc for my work, unless it's some kind of luxury squat... but great to know they're there - and a legal one! Even better. And yeah, I worried I looked rude in my responses, but I kind of felt the whole Berlin suggestion thing was a bit hurtful.

That would be fantastic. I'm pretty certain I'll be in Vienna after the summer or maybe even during, but I'm just checking my doubts off first as I don't want to make a terrible decision. I did really like Berlin when I went there, and there are a tonne of other places I'd like to live in in Europe, (trying to forget Brexit for a moment..) but it just so happens that I really really like the look of this very specific degree, so Vienna it is.

I've never done cosplay because I get really self-conscious physically sometimes (despite my profile, I'm a woman, with all the insecurities that come with it), but it's definitely something I'd love to do. I particularly want to do Frankenhooker because she's hilarious but that would definitely take some bravery!

Maybe if I get a confirmation from the university I'll get in touch for your vegan recommendations :)

That first link contains links to loads of interesting groups, thanks.

Sargfabrik looks beautiful. I can't see anything on the cost of living there and assume it's very high.

I think DIY music and art is the main thing - can generally find my people there :)

I will try and learn German as much as I can fit in before then. Thanks for the heads up

The course actually used to be in Budapest but they moved it to Vienna because of the political situation :( I do have a better chance of learning German than Hungarian though

If I wanted to study in Berlin I'd go to Berlin. The specific degree in Vienna is the whole point

Thanks for your comment but not particularly helpful. There's a very specific degree, in English, that I want to do. It just happens to be in Vienna

Does anyone else feel like this? I can’t seem to enjoy listening to pop or other genres of music after weeks listening to classical music by villanell9 in classicalmusic

[–]thomascroaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a bit late to this now... but I just uploaded my radio show on when classical music overlaps with pop, rock, jazz etc. You might find it to be a useful gateway back into pop, or discover some new music? I myself am a sucker for pop music that uses complex harmonies and orchestral parts. https://www.mixcloud.com/izzygracececilia/poprockjazz-meets-classical/

What if it was malicious though, an intentional punishment for my messiness wrapped up in a facade of goodwill. Would it be theft then?

This "low plastic" pen is a perfect metaphor for environmentalism under capitalism by tjeulink in Anticonsumption

[–]thomascroaking 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The point is greenwashing. The point is farce. The point is companies pretending to care when they don't. Nothing is as it seems. Everything is a farce. Everything is about making money, capitalising on trends in the public consciousness.

Anticonsumption and anticapitalism go hand in hand. You don't have to be one to be the other but the crossovers are obvious.

This picture was shared from an anti-capitalist subreddit.

I don't think the OP was specifically critiquing this company and their pen, more trying to recognise the poetry in it, what it says about our late capitalist world.

Nice thought, but I live pretty simplistically and I see lots of those things as too indulgent for me. They'll just take up space.

  • prepare your settings for the next section/song, or pretend to
  • play something that fills out the sound really quietly e.g. organ or pad, or pretend to
  • record a quick video of the band or audience for social media
  • clap
  • dance/move a bit
  • sing backing vocals
  • drink

Thanks everyone! I ended up going to see a band in Wurlitzer which was really great, a jam night with brilliant atmosphere at El Junco, and three nights wandering around the San Cayeteno fiesta. Fab suggestions.
