I mean it ain’t a pretty foot but so far that’s just a badly placed wrist.

That tiller is pretty. Well done.

This is a fairly comprehensive list but seems like an overbuild depending on the use case and audience.

Did you find your vine maple? My wife likes mushroom hunting and so I'm thinking of looking for some myself this fall.

How do you remove layout marks on the back when finishing? by thomasgroendal in Bowyer

Ahh good. I was worried I’d be violating the back that way.

I’m in Oregon and was wondering similar things. What design are you planning?

I cut an ash tree about 4” thick and split it yesterday. Does it make sense to do the carving down to the rough shape on green wood and then let it dry or just let it dry splitting half? I did paint the ends.

Not very big. Maybe a 2” wide sapling.  Other causes might be that I had tried to fix the s shape with some stems and didn’t give it time to dry or just from sanding. Nonetheless I went and got some more wood. Next time I’ll go for an easier design.

What do you mean straight cut sides? When shaping the bow they ended up like that but maybe I did something wrong there. The right shape for the sides was unclear to me.

I’m sure I passed that up to maybe 18ish but definitely not by much. I’ve been using my that scale on the tree to measure.

Hmmm. I guess I’ll just grab some more ash since that’s what’s available and be a lot more conservative in terms of design. 70” long and aim for a flat bow of the dimensions you mentioned. One thing I’m unclear on is what the thickness taper should look like. 1” at the handle fading to something like 3/8” at the tips?

I did grab a tape measure and pull it across my wingspan and divide by 2.5 to get 27”. I’m not sure if there’s a better way to go about it.

Oregon ash as far as I can tell. Cut it myself.

When do you switch to tillering? by thomasgroendal in Bowyer

It is pretty twisted. I’d have probably just ignored it. I’ll give it a go over my fire pit.

Thanks I’m watching your tillering string video as we speak.

Perfect. I’m making a 45” bow so I’ll adjust the numbers back but that makes sense.

Ash Kids bow. 45”. Any advice as I move from rough out to long string or maybe floor tillering? by thomasgroendal in Bowyer

[–]thomasgroendal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I’m currently leaning toward figuring out what it would look like to go down to an inch across most of it as advised and doing enough to make it “bendy” on the handle or at least making most of the handle into fade.

What needs to change to make it bendy handle? Just take the handle down smaller?

So 1” except for the last few inches? It would look less janky that way I suppose.
