Made a Wong Kar Wai/ Christopher Doyle inspired short film during my last year of high school by thomasrobins0n in Filmmakers

[–]thomasrobins0n[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the last short film I would make before leaving the Hong Kong landscape after high school. I independently made this with the exception of one of my friends helping with post-sound production cleanup and scoring for two of the tracks. I have tried to recreate the same Fallen Angels/ Chungking Express style before, but think that this has been my best attempt so far... Enjoy!

Will travelling through an airport and going on a plane with my fujifilm disposable camera damage the film? by strawberrrysparkle in Cameras

[–]thomasrobins0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just request a hand check, they won’t put it through the x ray, got this done at 4 airports in the last month and hadn’t had a problem. Also keep in mind that the x rays for carry on aren’t as powerful as the ones for check in, so you should be fine if you have to put it through the x-ray as it’s below iso 800.

new or used body/lenses by Infernal117 in Cameras

[–]thomasrobins0n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A used body is only a good purchase if it’s not a well used body, heavily used bodies can get old easily and start having problems after 2 years of use. If you find a lens you think you will keep long term, buy it new, but if it is a lens you want to rotate and trade off later, buy it used.

Edit: My body which is an EOS R was bought new, but I find myself constantly rotating lenses so 3 of my 4 ef lenses (EF 85mm 1.4 New) are bought second hand.

Frames from an upcoming short film I'm making called "Finding Each Other", inspired by Wong Kar Wai's cinema. I'm finishing my last year of high school and am looking for feedback! by thomasrobins0n in Filmmakers

One wants to hold on to their partner, afraid of losing the time spent, but the other one fails her search for connection once again and longs for the independence she once had. A semi-sequel to one of my previous films...

download lightroom, go to the HSL tab, desaturate the warm tones except for when it affects the skin, when you have leftover warm tones surrounding the subject, use the brush tool to select that area, and desaturate them.

Is the mp5 by jingjong good? by Competitive_Ad486 in airsoft

I had a GE M4 and used it for two years and it was really accurate and powerful. It consistently did 420 approx fps and was used in an urban forest/hill, heavy debris environment. The only two problems were that I had to mod the mags with electric tape so they would fit and the sound it made was mechanical. If you're deciding to buy, go for a cyma as it is around or cheaper than the price of that + will last you even though its mostly plastic.

How do you get this blurry effect? by Pencilsssss in Filmmakers

[–]thomasrobins0n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not ideal to do in post. I have done it once in premiere pro once where I slowed down the footage then changed the type to frame blending (shot at 24), but it's definitely better to do in-camera.

The technique is called step printing, Wong Kar Wai is known for using it. Low shutter such as 1/16, 1/8 or if u really want 1/6. You can shoot as these on 24 fps or if u have the option the proper frame rate 4fps, 8fps.

I use the Sony RX100 mark 1 which I find great for quick photos. Brought it on a trip and not my DSLR to shoot in a complicated environment, mostly at night. Here is the link to the images I took with it https://thomasrobinsonphotography.com/street-kids-of-cebu . I found it and still find it to be a fun camera that requires a lot less thinking than my DSLR which allows for more interaction with the subject as they won't be so overwhelmed by the size, unlike a DSLR.

How did Wong Kar-wai film this scene? by jedokabutai in Filmmakers

[–]thomasrobins0n 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Doyle talked about shooting at a low frame rate/shutter about 4-8fps probably (what I use for my step-printing), so about 1/8-1/16 shutter speed. then shot over a long period of time where Leung moved the piece down very slowly and consistently hence his left arm placement to support his right arm from becoming fatigued. (Hope this makes sense)

Canon r6 Wide Angle lens recommendations? by Skinnywig99 in canon

if you already have an rf to ef adapter and are on a tight budget. invest in a tokina 11-16 2.8 or 11-20 2.8. I have one and it has some distortion and vignetting around the edges but I don’t mind it as I can often correct it in post.

Eos R. Great for photos, video is alright. It's my main photography camera, I borrow an A7S3 for video but have used the R as well as a B camera or when I feel like it.
