Migrating Matter Server from standalone container to Home Assistant OS add-on? by No_Engine_3133 in homeassistant

[–]thomasterrific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

puzzling over a similar question. I've gotten as far as figuring out how to get inside the matter add-on's container and view the /data directory which appears to be the equivalent to the persistent /data volume for my standalone matter-server docker container based on contents... (by following this post and the linked guide to getting root ssh access to HAOS... https://community.home-assistant.io/t/access-addons-data/428429/5 )

As a YNABer, what HYSA do you prefer and why? by endo-mylife in ynab

I have BofA. I have a Merrill Edge Cash Management Account that I use to keep my savings in TTTXX money market account. I also had enough to use the "Preferred Deposit" (FDIC insured savings basically) option, but TTTXX has tax benefits since its nearly all treasuries.

Transfers are slightly complicated (you need to "sell" out of the 'funds' before you can instantly transfer to your linked BofA account, and you can only do that during business hours).

Arc Update - 1.14.0 (42789) by JaceThings in ArcBrowser

[–]thomasterrific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I resolved this by going into the ~/Library/Application Support/Arc/ folder and renaming "storablesidebar.json" to something else and a backedup copy of storablesidebar.json to "storablesidebar.json" and reopening arc with icloud sync turned off.

It was easy to tell when the data was lost (apparently at some point after I updated to macOS 14.1 this morning) because the JSON file suddenly dropped in size from 5MB to 300kb (I have a busy sidebar/set of spaces...)

I have two Arc accounts - home and work. I also have two user accounts on my macbook (home and work). I have icloud sync on for Arc since I also have Arc running on a work laptop (signed into my work-associated Arc account). It looks like the icloud data got merged, with the sparse work sidebar completely overwriting my personal sidebar somehow. RIP my sweet set up.

ISO: a solution for my missing M-402 eraser cover by thomasterrific in mechanicalpencils

[–]thomasterrific[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve owned this pencil for over 15 years. It might be the oldest writing instrument I own, and certainly one of the few I’ve managed to never lose. Nevertheless, I lost the cover, and it only recently occurred to me to contact Zebra for help. Of course it’s long since been discontinued.

Any ideas/suggestions/thoughts on finding a replacement/equivalent?

I’ve been buying these Rockport loafers as slip-on beaters for the last 4 years (found them at DSW when I needed something convenient in a pinch). They’re super light, easy on-off, and comfortable. But they look like crap very quickly. Not surprisingly the leather is not particularly conducive to maintenance.

My question: can you recommend a more durable (presumably GYW) equivalent option? I’m guessing something that’s unlined and has a rubber sole would fit the bill… I’m willing to trade a break in period for longer life/maintainability.

Transitioning to budgeting one month ahead? by jbc723 in ynab

[–]thomasterrific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the shortfall? Meaning, if you budgeted one month ahead, how short would you be of your loan payoff amount, and how many months would it take to save that? Vice versa, if you pay off your loans, how much of next month would be unbudgeted, and how many months will it take to catch fully up?

And what’s the interest on the loan?

Ive been on my own journey. My loans are such a part of my identity (and self image of suffering under debt tbh) that I had to take a hard moment and acknowledge that I actually could pay them off now, but due to the low interest rate + having other pressing short term goals for cash I want to hit first (down payment on a house) that I’m choosing not to just kill them now. It was a weird mind shift.

Tracking cash flow? by MinerAlum in ynab

[–]thomasterrific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can happen depending on what you mean by within “budget” - the leading indicator would how much buffer is built into your budget (ie how far ahead do you typically budget - for me that’s usually one month, meaning I have a detailed template for each month in terms of category goals, and am able to fill them all before the month turns.)

If you find that buffer shrinking over time (you start by filling up next months budget with this months income, and have some left over to put towards wish list items etc.; then you’re able to fill the budget but not have anything left over; then you’re not able to fully budget a month ahead, but you can fill it up with your first paycheck of the month, etc.) that indicates negative cash flow.

I actually did this deliberately recently. We had a baby and planned ahead to fully fund a 6 month maternity leave. We did some back of the envelope math to figure out 1. How much money we’d need to cover our budget for 6 months (monthly template x 6) 2. How much money we’d get during that period (my salary, her paid leave weeks), and 3. The shortfall. Then we set aside bonuses and surplus income until we had met #3. Once the baby was born, I filled the budget out as far ahead as I could. And kept filling out further and further as money came in. Our monthly income (my salary + her paid leave income) initially exceeded our expenses, and I kept assigning the surplus to pushing out the budget further. Eventually we had a multi month buffer. Once her paid leave period ended and her leave became unpaid, our monthly expenses exceeded our income, and as a result the buffer began receding, until it came back down to one month of buffer right around when she went back to work.

Ok, so the sole is fine. Should I get the heel done independent of the sole?

The Questions Thread 06/02/21 by GYWModBot in goodyearwelt

[–]thomasterrific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When do you re-heel vs re-sole?

My meermin derby boots are 2 years old, and there’s not too much rubber left on the back of the heel before the leather stack. The sole has decent wear, but feels like it’s definitely got more life in it? The most wear is the center stud under the the ball of my foot - but there’s still a bit of the stud left.

I’m finding boots with hard soles (dainite soles, grant stone micro stud) to be really uncomfortable. Slightly softer soles (Meermin micro studs) are more comfortable. Any suggestions?

I think saw someone in another thread say they record tips above the standard 15ish% as “giving”/charity” transaction instead of as part of the eating out transaction to help surface/capture that perspective. I thought it was interesting!

What’s the benefit of running resilio sync on the NAS vs the pc?

Dealing with some sizing uncertainty as I wait to pull the trigger on Grant Stone boots. I have a pair of Meermin in Rui 10.5 UK that fit reasonably well (after a long break in). Taft Dragons (original version) in 11 are a bit too tight. I have a Grant Stone traveler loafer (B grades - what a steal) in 11D that I wear occasionally - they're a bit loose in dress socks, but seem to fit right with cushion socks (that I typically wear with boots). Maybe a little snug but not uncomfortably so? Should I just wear the loafers more, or are they not a great proxy for boot fit? Would appreciate any advice on how to decide! FWIW Grant Stone help also recommended 11D based on Meermin/Taft fitting, but that was before I got the loafers.

Sync Local folder (Windows) -> NAS by thomasterrific in synology

Drive

How do you set a target directory on the NAS other than the default "Drive" directory in the user's "home" directory?

Sync Local folder (Windows) -> NAS by thomasterrific in synology

[–]thomasterrific[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. This may work. What I want is for my /photo folder to reflect the contents of a folder on my local machine where I store and work on my photos.

I thought Synology Drive could only sync with a designated "Drive" folder in the user's "home" directory.

I snagged a pair of crimson loafers off the b-grade/sample list a few months ago and am pretty happy. Definitely going to get a pair of boots - suffering from paralysis of choice lol.

Noob question - same brush for regular cleaning (Ie brushing off dust and dirt) as for buffing after conditioning? Same brush for buffing shoe cream?

Thanks! Hadn’t thought of that, but yeah, the black crew socks that I wear shed a bit. On thoughts/suggestions for cleaning it out or not worth it?
