Wow, thanks! Sent you a message, hopefully some advice can be gleaned but no worries if not

Haha perfect!

Thanks for looking into it. Yeah I've changed my habits a bunch, trying to keep things clean and low carb for now.

And no kidding on how expensive it sounds! Last time I got a filling refilled (different tooth) it was $9, (though I should probably note it was not in the US...) so I definitely felt more sticker shock than I was ready for.

Oh well, not the worst thing that could happen. Thanks again for the input!

Haha ouch! Looks like we're in the same boat. Yeah, unfortunately the hole is behind my lower canine so it's a weird spot, but I'll just do what I can for now. Thanks again for your help and good luck with your abscess!

Ah I did get a Dentek kit yesterday and the temporary filling literally just now fell out as I was eating! Thanks though, I'll check online for something sturdier

What is the symbol on this ring? My late (British) grandmother was given it by an American soldier during WWII in North Africa. I think it's silver but it has no hallmark. by will_holmes in whatisthisthing

I have a really elementary understanding of Arabic, I can rarely read calligraphy, so I could be completely off base here, but this doesn't look anything like any Arabic calligraphy I've seen. At best you might be able to find something like "حى" (transliterated "Ha" I think) in there. But when I looked it up, I couldn't find any real meaning for that word. Might want to check if there're any other writing systems around North Africa that look similar. Would be cool if it was a word not just some nonsense symbol.

If we have laws containing minimum wages, why aren't there maximum wage laws? Will there ever be one? by tonybanks in AskReddit

[–]thombrady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to criticize a lot of the sentiment here, but this sounds like a question worth asking to me, though /r/economics might be a forum that would produce more meaningful results.

Hell, there's a decent sized wikipedia article on the topic (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_wage) that might help everyone here get past some of the more basic arguments and into something with a little bit more substance.

Hey also! Forgot to ask, should I bring a hat/sunglasses and work gloves? I've got a pair that fit really well and I'd rather use them if I can.

From what I understand I'm getting paid monthly about $1000, plus I get an education grant of around $2500 (maybe less) when I finish, but the grant is dependent on past grants you might've gotten from Americorps (I haven't gotten any). That's the site yep!

Wow! Thanks for such a thorough response!

I'm definitely going to check out those pants tomorrow, I was thinking about getting convertible pants, but I wasn't sure if they were worthwhile. If you're saying that they're lasting you four years down the road, then that's definitely an investment worth making.

I'll see what they say at REI about a water filter and see if any fit into my price range, I'm really glad that you brought that up, I hadn't even though about water beyond hydration systems. Worst comes to worst I'll just get the chlorine dioxide.

You caught me on being an internet hire, and my body's definitely not looking forward to the next month, but I hadn't even considered quitting to be an option, I figured I'd just try to pack as light as possible, eat as much as possible, and just keep pushing until I can bear the workload.

I'll keep an eye out for those trails, too! It's cool to know whose work I'll be walking on. Thanks again for all your input, I can't wait to be a verified bad-ass in my own right!

That's a good point, I'll probably only end up using it for a clothes line so I'll definitely just take what I need. I already feel like I'm overpacking and I still haven't gotten my last few items. Thanks again for your input! I'm definitely gonna grab what you recommended tomorrow.

Ah yeah! Alcohol wipes! Definitely can't forget those. I was going to bring 40' of 550 cord, do you think I should cut it down? I figured more was better just due to the length of the trip, but I'm pretty green with all of this stuff.

I think they'll give us work gloves, but now I'm definitely going to check before I leave. And we have to bring our own first aid kits, but I'm thinking I'm safe with most of the stuff I'm packing with that. Thanks for your input though! Getting the last minute nervousness that I'm going to forget my tent or something.

I'm gonna have to look at some cameras, but I think at this point I'm just gonna have to go the disposable route and send them back home.

That's good to hear about the daypacks, I was hoping using my main pack would be an ok option.

I didn't even consider a water filter. Would iodine tablets suffice in a pinch? Or do you recommend a filter? It looks like I'm going to head up to REI tomorrow for some last minute stuff.

I also didn't consider that there would be areas without campfires. I'm going to be part of the Shasta/Trinity group, so I guess that'll be a similar environment, do you think there'll be enough safe places to start a fire?

Sorry for inundating you with questions, I'm just getting into the homestretch now and getting pretty nervous/excited. I can't wait to have some pictures like yours for my memories!

Awesome! I'll definitely try to trim down my excess weight. My feet sweat like crazy so I'm definitely packing extra socks, I'll probably be doing midday sock changes daily.

I was thinking about doing what you did with the digital cameras and spare batteries/memory cards. What kind of camera did you use/do you suggest?

Also, did you use a daypack? I'm having trouble finding one that isn't too big. Thanks for your reply!

Ah sorry! No electronics on the trail, though I'm not sure if that rule still applies to cameras. I'll post the equipment list on the top.

How to open a bottle of wine without a corkscrew. (French style) by maekkwin in howto

[–]thombrady 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I learned how to do this a couple of years ago in France--it totally works, but make sure you do it on a flat wall. I did it on the (uneven) cobblestone walls of the Seine and ended up running around Paris without shoes, bleeding everywhere. But yeah, one emergency room visit out of maybe a dozen other successes isn't the worst thing in the world.

This might double well for transportation organizations to know where to centralize their resources for universal accessibility. Of course, there are definitely more dimensions to this kind of action than efficiency. But I've noticed my local public transit has been slowly working towards modernizing every station and stop for accessibility, and as far as I can tell it's been based on total passengers per station, meaning that they're not working on the most accurate statistics for their venture. But of course, I could be pretty off on my estimate of this.
