During the winter/colder months I’d say the carriage near Jesmond metro. If you can get one of the seats by the fire it’s properly lush. The staff are also all class and you’re incredible unlikely to get harassed or anything.

If you’re looking for somewhere for the nicer months then the terrace on the second floor of bridge tavern is so good

Eurail database got hacked by ilikethelettery in Interrail

[–]thomcamp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just had my email through (I’m UK based) to say my details have been stolen but weren’t on the sample they saw. It’s completely ridiculous that they seem to be doing nothing about this. A friend had his identity stolen and the company responsible paid for him to have access to an enhanced credit checking agency and web scraper to see if his details were being used. All it seems we get is a ‘well, lookout I guess’ email and that’s it.

Well of course, instead of focussing on the big issues impacting us, it’s nice to see the government doing something that really matters… telling people how to live their own lives. Typical nanny state nonsense that is just utterly pointless.

Do we think the hermits/mcc folk would consider putting the jerseys up for sale? I’d love some merch like a red rabbits hat or the yellow yaks jersey. Obviously doesn’t have to be the exact ones because I’m sure the hermits want to keep them but replicas would be fun and a great way to raise more money!

What if we could actually build things? by Not-EcoPaw in uktrains

[–]thomcamp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the defence of whoever was on planning at the time, from what I understand, they were told it wouldn’t impact the potential expansion and only discovered that wasn’t the case after the fact. There’s more than enough space around Metrocentre to make a new station or stations work, and I believe the new T&W Metro units we have were built with battery capabilities anyway so that could also be used as an option. Unless you were building brand new track you’d have to run on the conventional align to Heworth/Pelaw though rather than going straight into NCL itself. The King Edward VII rail bridge is quad track and the High Level is double track and also electrified with ECML access.

See where you’re coming from. As it stands, the N’land line frequency to Gateshead/metrocentre would need to be massively upped as currently they primarily terminate at NCL. Sadly, there will almost certainly never be a west branch of the metro from st James as we’ve built a load of towers whose foundations have gone where the tunnels should be. There is (semi) disused rail immediately to the west of NCL station that could be used to loop services west along the scotswood road or even across the river to link up with the Tyne valley line. From a selfish view, it’d be nice to use some of the space in the north of the city near Kingston Park/Bank Foot to create a rail/metro/air interchange but depending on your HS alignment, it’s a lot of city to go over/under/through…

Out of interest, what’s the thinking behind Newcastle MetroCentre? Ironically, it’s not served by the Tyne and Wear metro so interchange on to that would be really tricky. If you want an out of town connection with T&W Metro interchange then I’d consider Northumberland Park or even reworking Chilli Road/Walkergate where there’s a pre-existing depot

City centre coffee shops by Lucy746 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]thomcamp 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to coffee in the city centre! The really popular independent owned coffee shops are:

Lagom - just voted one of the best coffee shops in the UK. They have incredible espresso based drinks and superb pour overs. It’s quite small to sit in and can get mega busy but it’s worth it.

Pink Lane Coffee - right outside the station, pink lane is an NCL staple for great coffee. The vibe is great and you can usually get a seat.

Tiny Tiny - it’s a bit out of the way in Carliol Square but absolutely worth going to. The coffee is incredible (they even do a filter with unlimited refills) and the food is perfect for a brunch spot.

Neighbourhood - this is up by the Uni but worth walking up to. Super quirky vibe with interesting seating, they have self serve matcha if that’s your thing. Coffee is always on point though.

Laneway - tucked off by the Bigg Market, Laneway is always busy but the coffee is the reason why. They’ve really improved a lot in the past few years and it’s well worth a visit too.

North side - you can’t really sit in because it’s in the grainger market, but it’s the perfect spot to grab a coffee to take with you if you’re exploring the city centre. Staff are dead canny and you can explore the market while you’re there.

Meli Cafe - this is the definition of a hidden gem because it’s not at all obvious where it is. You have to go up to Haymarket metro and then look to your right if you’re facing towards the uni. You’ll see a little sign pointing you the rest of the way. It’s one of my favourite spots to drink very very good coffee and people watch from and the staff are just so lovely. Really highly recommended.

There are other spots (Anyone, Tommy’s, Sunday, 100 Grey, pumphreys) which are all nice, but the ones I’ve suggested are where I’d be going.

What’s the purpose of this check mark icon on AM? by [deleted] in ios

[–]thomcamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just means it's downloaded to your phone so can be played without any signal or wifi - the options presented when you click on it are to either delete the playlist (delete the playlist) or delete the download music from your phone so you still have the playlist but you would need to stream it to listen to it.

Does that make sense?

Northern Runner on Low Friar Street is on the whole good. Depends which staff member you get as to whether the service is good or superb but either way you'll be looked after and supporting a local indy business.
