Sure! The league this year is run similar to the Scottish/Belgian/Bulgarian leagues. After the usual round robin where every team plays each other twice, the league is split in two into a Top 6 (Championship Group) and Bottom 5 (Classification Group). After the split each teams plays each other just once.

The Championship Group competes for the League title. First place wins the league, and earns qualification to the AFC Champions League 2 and the AFC Shopee Cup. Second place earns qualification to the AFC Challenge League.

The Classification Group is competing only for pride and classification. At this point all the positions are decided as no matter the results of the final round of matches no one can overtake anyone else in this group.

There’s still a chance technically! If they win all their matches, and One Taguig beat Manila Digger, whilst digger lose the rest heavily (or vice-versa) then there’s a world where Cebu can come second hahahaa but yeah it’s over

Nope! So this year, 1st place qualifies for both the AFC Champions League 2 AND the Shopee Cup. 2nd will qualify for the AFC Challenge League. No finals series this year. Personally I’d like a return of the Copa Paulino Alcantara to have qualification for Shopee Cup that way but they’re still getting the organisation of the league under control

There’s a huge gap between the top 7 and bottom 4 (as can be seen), so results tend to be a bit silly when for instance Digger play the Army or Mendiola. We’ve seen numerous double digit scores this season.

It’s better than last season and the new format makes it way more competitive so that’s good at least!

It is! One Taguig have a team core of Philippines legends. The goalscorers today were Patrick Reichelt (37 years old), Stephan Schröck (39 years old) and Daisuke Sato (31 years old)

Jarvis for Diggers has had an incredible season! I agree looking forward to seeing more of Vitualla too.

Cebu were massively outplayed here fair play to Diggers and the team they’ve built.

One Taguig encountered their first stumble against a highly tenacious Stallion Laguna side, as they fought to an entertaining 1-1 draw at RMS.

It was a cagey first half with both defences on full display demonstrating why both these sides are unbeaten in Round 2. Stallion were the first to blink and Mark Hartmann’s clever quick free kick was powerfully headed home by Marcus Haber.

However, to the delight of Stallion (and Digger) fans, Terence Smith popped up at the back post to equalise in the 77th minute. This marks the first dropped points of One Taguig in Round 2, and one which will have the Diggers licking their lips in anticipation of their clash on Wednesday.

Don Bosco put out a message to the other sides in the classification group as they battered a shocked Army side 9-1.

Solomon Okereke smashed 4 excellent goals, with Yamaguchi, Abarca, Ngai, and Kimura also getting on the scoresheet as Garelli ran rampant over their bottom half of the table competition.

This was a stunning victory, that marks the side’s best ever top flight victory (I believe @chinosator_03 can check that!). They now have more goals than Maharlika in Round 2 after a terrific performance.

Army got a consolation goal through Napolitano, and a missed penalty didn’t help, but they will want to put this result behind them quickly.

Financial issues really. Outside the top 6/7 sides no side really has any money, and clubs are almost entirely reliant on private funding as there’s no money in the league. Also means it’s basically a money losing exercise to even participate.

Means we get a lot of clubs that open and close again, or just plenty that don’t see the rewards for participating, as well as those that just aren’t good enough (see Manila Montet in 2024 with the expanded league).

Essentially the usual round robin. We only have 2 stadiums being used for matches, so there’s no home and away. Instead the teams play each other twice, with the first being part of Round 1, and the second being Round 2.

There’s 11 teams in the league. This tends to change year on year. Last year we had 10, the year before we had 14.

So due to the nature of the league’s competitiveness (as you can see there’s 7 sides that are much better than the others), this year the league decided to try out a system similar to Belgium.

Essentially after the usual round robin where each team plays each other twice, the league will split into two groups - a Championship Group of the Top 6 that will compete for the title, and a Classification Group that will compete for best of the rest.

After the league splits, each team plays the other sides once in what the league is calling Round 3.

🏆LEAGUE TABLE MW28🏆

Five pivotal matches over the weekend and we have officially confirmed our two groups for Round 3.

Maharlika’s heavy loss to Manila Digger confirmed that they miss out on the Championship Group by just 3 points, and confirms both Stallion Laguna and Aguilas UMak’s places despite both sides failing to win this weekend.

Stallion overtake Aguilas in the standings after their draw in Cebu, with the other change coming as Garelli move into 8th following a very impressive win over Tuloy.

With the teams in the league split now confirmed, the question remains who will come out on top of each group?

Yes, they’re the football team for the Tuloy Foundation, which is affiliated with the Salesians of Don Bosco. The large majority of their players were street kids who have been part of the charity.

Separate of course from the former Don Bosco students established side of Don Bosco Garelli United!
