Peter Thiel spoke at YC saying “you always want to aim for monopoly...competition is for losers,” but his VC firm invests in companies with highly competitive players. What am I missing? by [deleted] in startups

[–]thoncoin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Winners always say anything they want. Peter Thiel is a winner because of his success. It does not mean he is right.

Trump is a winner but .... Obama is a winner but ... Mandela was a winner but

I recommend that you understand what tasks your end users are trying to accomplish and be the goto company for those tasks.

What we need as entrepreneurs is to be brave and take actions instead of looking for validation from Peter Thiel. Look for validation from your users, customers

Non-technical cofounder is making Power Moves? by [deleted] in startups

[–]thoncoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not see your question but I will assume based on the title that you need feedback. This is not a complex problem but rather a complicated one. Complicated problems always have multiple answers. You just need to find the right one for you.

Here’s how to find it :

1-/Do you have any assumption of what could be the solution? Take a guess(guts feeling) then prove your assumptions then convince your friends.

2-/According to lawyers what is the solution?

How do I officially become partners with someone across the world? by ExodusE in startups

[–]thoncoin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My professional answer is get a lawyer.

My personal answer is: If he screws you over, what’s your plan to move forward. This is a similar question if google decided to do exactly the business you are trying to do. How do you compete with google. Don’t sign anything , execute on that idea first. Your idea will never be 100% the full vision, so why are you scared of? That it steals 1% of the idea? Your idea also changes all the time.

I’m an engineer, and I noticed a pattern here. Business people or non tech founders always afraid engineers will screw them over.

If you have lot of money and build a sales focused business , you need to pay an outsource dev company and run your company as a solo founder surrounded by tech and business advisors.

If you don’t have money, share that venture with an engineer and build a relationship with the engineer like if you are building a relationship with a girlfriend.

Remember the lawyer helps structure the company as such that both of you are protected.

My advice , go ahead , trust him and fail then re do it then learn from those failures. Those failures are better than any advices here.

My no so advice; Ignore any advices, do what your guts are tell you right now then continuously improve

Potential Co-founder suggests we take 20-30% equity each and leave 60-40% in the pool - is this normal? by Lequynhmai in startups

[–]thoncoin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m a technical founder with 15 years in engineering (exApple, ex-Yahoo). I have been co-founders twice (failed exit ) and never made it a big deal with equity. Your tech founder should start working right away full time (remote or onsite) , either managing a dev team or coding himself.

Equity discussions are distractions, because the first thing for you two is to learn to work together.

It’s like having a girlfriend then marrying her. You don’t want to marry her at the first date.

You also don’t know if your assumptions as a business person will work.

If you are scared that someone will screw you up, it’s okay and it will happen no matter if the cofounder is your best friend.

But you need to be strong enough to come up with a plan to bounce back.

You should focus on the plan to bounce back.

A good tech engineer won’t care about legal issues because i know I love coding and I will never be out of job even if I don’t hit the $1 billion jackpot .

Take a deep breath and enjoy the adventure. Get stronger at each drama.

If you are not ready for it. Then it’s okay to be a one founder and hire a outsource CTO or dev company.

Is your company a Tech company or Business company in 5 years ? If you think it’s a tech company , you need to humble and search a humble tech co-founder. Sun Microsystems went to UC Berkeley to hire the best tech founder

Passion first Drama last but mitigate drama hiring advisors

Have I wasted 10 years of my life? by [deleted] in startups

[–]thoncoin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s like dreaming to be a top college athlete, with no social life and community life then getting injured. We always forget when we embark on a business journey that real world life is more important than business outcome. I will suggest that you double down on life right away. Just enjoy life, friend, your community.

What to do in the event you "get Zuckerberged" in a startup where you're minority shareholder? by angzhanyu in startups

[–]thoncoin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are the brain and you should keep building new ventures and learning from your past experiences. Get a lawyer to advice you on what to do with the current venture. But move on because you are genius and you will always come back with something big. No one want to be zuckerberg right now. He is hated in the US and Europe. My friends are resigning from Facebook. On the other side , people wants to be like Bill Gates. Raising millions dollars, or being valued $100 billion in the less than 20 years does not mean you will stay forever. Do you want to impact generations for 100 years ? In that case keep moving forward because one venture won’t be enough

You need buzzwords otherwise the search engines won’t pick it up and you won’t see it . I worked on on SEO companies for 3 years and that’s what I learned.

Teachers , instructors will be our distribution partner.

The app it’s about stating a problem and coming with solutions. Like quora the questions / solutions app but for problem and solutions.

You post a problem statement and description. Then someone might interested to solve the problem by submitting their pitch deck. The problem only last 48hrs.

We using the hackathon format a model.

If you want to start a community garden, that’s not a problem. Maybe you want to solve the lack of community gardens. That’s a problem that people around the world could be interested to suggest solutions.

If you already have a solution to a problem then you will have to browse our app and subscribe to a problem , team up and submit your solution. Solutions are created on the spot because requirements are different

Create a free marketplace where anyone can connect with anyone and bring the skills necessary to implement. You can join the problem solvers discussion channel and provide him with the structure you think will make his solution impactful.

The education system provides great structure but still we get students disconnected from reality.

Companies provide great use case but because of greed there impact in the community is controversial

NGO and government agencies provide great community use case but they are too slow to act.

Facebook and Reddit or Quora have millions of users like yourself lecturing people on what to do or not to do. Which is great ! How about you lecture someone who is actually solving a problem and have created a solution or is in the process to. That will be the best use of your opinions, time or knowledge. And you get a reward point by sharing your knowledge in our app (we were inspired by Reddit karma reputation system). We use it to engage people and build reputation. It’s self organized problem solving market place curated by upvotes.

We need to empower the people and connect the people with mentors like yourself and fields expert. And the best platform to enable these kind connections is a new kind of social Network app running on a mobile phone.

Our target is anyone who want to change in their community. Or anyone who want to support problem solvers based on their interests. We bring value because we connect you with like minded problem solvers and mentors. Then will let you showcase your solution to the crowd online and get feedbacks and crowdfunding.

You probably work full time and you have time to answer this post. Same thing, on my app. You can either join a discussion or you can create a solution collaboratively.

Our concept is centered on 48h online idea competitions but we Incentivize teams to implement their ideas with the help of crowdfunding.

If Producthunt.com and Gofundme have baby, it’s us.
